I love dogs, and had one for 11 years in the past (totally different breed). I also know that ANY dog is capable of turning/ snapping/ biting if sufficiently stressed or provoked, so never left mine alone with either of my kids, or anybody else. We made sure he got plenty of exercise, but I personally never walked him off the lead by myself. He understood recall perfectly, but occasionally could be downright disobedient, and I have a slight disability that leaves me unable to run. As I couldn't be 100% sure of his recall, he was ALWAYS leashed in public. (DH would sometimes take him for an off-lead run around a field). This was a family-friendly breed, and most owners are careful enough to take precautions such as the ones we took.
So it's heartbreaking and disappointing (but not surprising) to hear about further tragedies with XL bullies this week. There are a couple of things I genuinely don't understand:
Why do people want these dogs in particular, when everyone knows how strong, aggressive and destructive they can be? Many dogs can behave in an unpredictable way in certain circumstances, and these particular dogs are notorious for it (whether or not they are 'misunderstood'!)
And why can't or won't they keep them leashed and under tight control around other people?
The latest tragedy shows that some of these dogs can't even be trusted with their owners. I honestly can't understand the appeal.
