There was one idiot on my local fb group in a thread about these poor “fur babies” suggesting a get together so owners could walk their xl bullies together for emotional support. Just what we need, a pack of them patrolling the area.
I do feel very sorry for the dogs but reality is that they have been bred for aggression/ fighting/ guarding and generally appeal to the least responsible dog owners.

Wankers. You must have the IQ of a bottle of piss to want one in your home

OffToIreland · 22/08/2024 14:25

The actual owner should be charged with manslaughter then. (Regarding the comment it wasn't his dog)

Rubery is a shithole I'm not surprised to see it come up!

What possible relevance can your view that Rubery is a "shithole" have to this incident? Do you think the dogs looked around, realised where they were living and decided to kill this man as a form of protest?

SerendipityJane · 22/08/2024 14:37

As predicted, another day, another death

Hopefully locals have been alerted to lock themselves indoors until these beasts are caught

A brown dog, thought to be an American Bulldog type, looking at the camera.

Hunt for two dogs suspected of killing man in Birmingham

Two dogs have been seized but two more American bulldog types are being sought by police.

As a child I would often go to work with my did which involved visiting a lot of farms, most farms would have a dog or two. I was always taught never to touch a dog without asking the owner first and never touch a Jack Russel. JRTs are bastards.

Indeed the man means you can't even give them away!

What a load of rubbish. I grew up with JRTs. One was dog aggressive, easily managed. The others were well mannered, easy going little bundles of fun. They were brought up properly though, trained well, terrier instincts understood and worked with. I’d have them now, but I prefer larger dogs (not XL Bullies, before anyone starts Hmm ).

Normal rules of dog behaviour don’t really work with XL Bullies. They don’t give the same warnings of being uncomfortable with a situation or person, for one thing.

I’m guessing that farm dogs brought up as working dogs to keep the rats down are different to domestic pets.

SerendipityJane · 22/08/2024 14:45

There is a world of difference between a working dog, and a pet.

Ffs!!! Seriously hope this was the owner but doesn't sound like it was!

When on earth are all the bully sympathising divs going to wake up and see there is absolutely NO FUCKING PLACE for any animal like this in society. None. There is absolutely no fucking need to own one. They're lethal.

Yes, some JRTs are badly trained/ not trained at all / unwanted behaviour brushed off by crap owners because the dog is small and can be very dog aggressive. I was addressing the comment that “All JRTs are bastards”, because they aren’t.
Not all XL Bullies are bastards either, but the propensity to attack other animals and humans is actively bred into them, rather than being a misdirection of traits bred for the job they originally did. The job they were bred for was to intimidate, maim and kill.

It's not really worth dignifying this offensive nonsense with an answer, is it?

So I've reported you instead.

How about "never". Does that work for you ?

I was quietly impressed by it's bravery or lunacy lol 😆

Yes, our dog aggressive JRT would have taken anything on if she had the chance. Tiny little thing, adored people, loathed other dogs. Perfectly manageable with the lifestyle we had then - no ‘pup parties’ in the park or doggy daycare needed, just long walks and the chance to rid a shed of rats now and again.

Cattery · 22/08/2024 15:04

There’s only one reason to own one and that’s the pure intimidation of others. The bit that makes me puke is the “he’s soft as shit” line that’s trotted out. No. He. Isn’t. He can rip you to bits in seconds. Destroy the lot of them. Utter bastards of dogs

The German Shepherd didn't even defend itself I think it was floored by the sheer aggression lol!

I've got a Patterdale like that. I always say that they are JRTs with added neuroses. Fine with people (if barky) hates 90% of other dogs on sight.

Fortunately we're rural and she's very well behaved other than hating dogs and trying to chase anything that moves. But so many people think she's small and cute and I have to explain that you shouldn't get too close... She, and many other breeds, are very instinct-driven and instinct overrides training, particularly when the dog is stressed.

drivinmecrazy · 22/08/2024 15:20

A few months ago my Weimaraner was attacked by two Rottweilers.
They had escaped their enclosure and set upon my dog.

It still gives me nightmares, seeing these two massive dogs jump on mine.

All I could do was to let his lead go and pray he would run.
The poor baby (was only 15 months at the time) just lay down and cried.

Very fortunately other dogs owner was there within a minute.

Luckily my pup was just left with superficial injuries But god knows what would have happened if this had been a XL attack.

Makes me sick to the stomach that I wasn't able to defend my dog against the pure weight of these dogs.

Have to say their owner took full responsibility and reinforced their compound and had the boys nuts chopped off the next day.

This reinforces my belief that it's not always the owners that was clearly a decent owner.

ScruffMuffin · 22/08/2024 15:33

I love dogs, and had one for 11 years in the past (totally different breed). I also know that ANY dog is capable of turning/ snapping/ biting if sufficiently stressed or provoked, so never left mine alone with either of my kids, or anybody else. We made sure he got plenty of exercise, but I personally never walked him off the lead by myself. He understood recall perfectly, but occasionally could be downright disobedient, and I have a slight disability that leaves me unable to run. As I couldn't be 100% sure of his recall, he was ALWAYS leashed in public. (DH would sometimes take him for an off-lead run around a field). This was a family-friendly breed, and most owners are careful enough to take precautions such as the ones we took.

So it's heartbreaking and disappointing (but not surprising) to hear about further tragedies with XL bullies this week. There are a couple of things I genuinely don't understand:

Why do people want these dogs in particular, when everyone knows how strong, aggressive and destructive they can be? Many dogs can behave in an unpredictable way in certain circumstances, and these particular dogs are notorious for it (whether or not they are 'misunderstood'!)

And why can't or won't they keep them leashed and under tight control around other people?

The latest tragedy shows that some of these dogs can't even be trusted with their owners. I honestly can't understand the appeal.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 22/08/2024 15:49

@ScruffMuffin they want them because they’re strong and aggressive, mostly like the owners. I’m a probation officer and I got told multiple times a week about the dog that someone is getting. It’s always an XL bully. I haven’t been told about any dogs recently so they either don’t want a dog at all if it’s not an XL bully or they’re keeping quiet about owning one.

There’s a woman in the social housing at the end of my street who had 3, with 4 kids in a tiny 3 bedroom house, one of which is a baby. The male dog jumped out of the window and ran into my friends’ house and attacked their cocker spaniels. Nothing was done as it was a dog on dog attack but eventually after police, the RSPCA and social services intervention and many, many reports, the male one was taken away. Thankfully before it killed a child or another dog. When the females were in heat they would lock the male in the car the whole time 😵. My Labrador won’t even walk past the house, we have to go the long way round!
