To be ashamed that we have caused people of this country to live in fear?

Watching news. People, ordinary people apart from the colour of their skin, are being threatened, their business ruined, and are petrified to step outside.
Because a few ignorant, selfish, thuggish women and men, who don't have the wit to understand that social media spouts false information.
They don't want to understand what is happening, their herd mentality kicks in and off they go. They even take their kids. A new summer holiday past-time

Saying it isn’t “we” is exactly like saying “not all men”.

And your own voting choices may well have played into this personally even if you don’t think you’re racist.

YANBU OP - it’s utterly shameful

To an extent I agree, in that we don't want random groups of men congregating in this sort if highly charged situation. But to equate the people in Birmingham with the far right rioters is incredibley disingenuous from my point of view. I've watched both groups on tiktok live, as they're going about whatever they're doing, and they behave very differently. Obviously we've all seen the wanton violence and destruction of the far right group. And as I said, when I watched the Birmingham group they were just standing around - no looting, no violence, no clashes with police, no destruction. You'll get bad faith actors everywhere though, and it's awful and inexcusable that those tires were slashed and that woman intimidated.

That being said, my family and community has personal experience of this kind of racist violence, so I'm not going to condemn people for protecting their communities when the police so far have been unable to do so. Had my community not stepped up to protect their people, homes and businesses in the 60s/70s, well then maybe my mum wouldnt have made it out of that high street building.

Maybe we need to call the army in and that will stop the chaos?

I agree that the army might need to be called in to put a stop to this, it is frightening and completely unacceptable.

It does seem that it was some unacceptable things going on in Birmingham as well though? Nowhere near the same scale of previous violence but still unacceptable.

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cly883p5yj8o.amp

i believe that we need to take an overall much stricter view with regards to male violence (it is almost always male) on our streets. Regardless of the reason, the aim, the background, violence, destruction and looting is unacceptable and should be fully charged under the law - and equally for equal offences.

racism should also be identified, prosecuted and punished to the full extent of the law.

Nigel farage
Laurence fox
Tommy Robinson
Suella braverman
Priti Patel
Kemi Badenoch

Should be arrested and charged with terrorism and inciting hatred and violence.

what has Kemi Badenoch said/done to warrant an arrest? Please include reputable sources and quotes, not paraphrasing from numerous dubious places.

Gummybear23 · 06/08/2024 09:45

All of them.
Add that katie hopkins to pot too.
Didn't Hitler express freedom of speech?

Farage has bought this country to its knees.

No Farage is giving people a voice. If people feel that they don't have a voice, that is when socitety breaks down.

You cannot silence people just because you do not agree with what they are saying unless what they say is illegal.

She down played Frank Hester's comments about black women.
The business man who said Ms abbot 'was a type of woman who wants you to hate all black women.'

Said it is acceptable to accept his donation.

For a black person in a position of power to do this gives the green card to everyone.

Her actions indirectly fuel racism.

I don't know anyone in this country who "lives in fear", and I live in a city.
It is up to us, the public, to show a bit of backbone and treat these random idiots with the contempt they deserve. Without the oxygen of publicity, and over-reaction, they'll soon get bored.

So what?

So are you saying that people can't say things that are legal in the UK just because Hilter gave people a voice?

As a white woman, I live in fear of what is happening.

I can't imagine how scary it is for people who are non white or practicing a faith that is visible to be feeling.

Having said that i do 100% agree with you that we should not give these people the oxygen
Or publicity.

I'm white and I'm very scared of what is happening. My DH is Indian and for the first time in the 25 years I've known him, he has been scared about going out. Our Muslim friends are scared to take their children out in the summer holidays. There have been numerous posts on MN from people who are saying they are scared to go out.
I'm glad that you don't know anyone who's frightened.

So people are not allowed to say legal things in the UK?

You want the UK to become like China?

What is wrong with you?

Gummy Bear,

I have reported the poster, asked for them to be banned. Sorry if your words are lost as collateral damage.

expatorimmigrant · 06/08/2024 11:25

Hate speech is not protected. Inciting people to violence is a crime. It is not so clear cut as you can say what you like. I actually think the 'we' is exactly right here. We all have a responsibility for our collective culture and government. We have to have a louder voice than the racist, under educated thugs who are being influenced by bad actors. I certainly haven't rioter but I have taken on people I know, in our family, who make dangerous statements not backed by any facts. I certainly am the 'we'. It's not good enough to say 'I'm not rioting therefore this is nothing to do with me'.

We haven't. It's a small number of people in a country of 60 million.

The rest of us are disgusted at their behaviour

Hear, hear.

Adviceneeeeded · 06/08/2024 11:30

As a white Muslim woman who is married to a middle Eastern man. With mixed race kids and business owners. I'm terrified these riots are going to migrate to where we are. And nothing we can do about it.

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/08/2024 11:31

“Watching news. People, ordinary people apart from the colour of their skin, “

Not sure what you mean by this, OP? Why do you think the colour of someone’s skin makes them “not ordinary”?

1dayatatime · 06/08/2024 11:54

@Dermadirj

You touch on an important point here which raises the question of growing division and polarisation of views even amongst the more moderate and non violent.

So when there is say an anti right wing / Muslims protest but there is a minority that become violent then the right wing label the entire protest as violent and extremist . This in turn creates a feeling of resentment and not being listened to amongst the peaceful and moderate protesters pushing some of them towards more extreme views.

Similarly when a group of right wing protesters but there is a minority that becomes violent then left wing label the entire protest as violent and extremist. This in turn creates a feeling of resentment and not being listened to amongst the peaceful and moderate protesters pushing some of them towards more extreme views.

In both cases those who break the law should be dealt with by the police and prosecuted without any differentiation.

6gallonsaday · 06/08/2024 11:58

To the pp above comparing some of the UKs recently democratically elected politicians to Hitler, you are a moron.

I can't remember who said it, but there's an academic or some such who said that as soon as anyone feels the need to shriek 'just like Hitler' they have already lost a debate. It's such a trite thing to do. Usually an attempt to shut other people up rather than engage with valid, nuanced points they are making.

What you are saying is interesting. But I don’t hear much of Hindu extremists, Sikh extremists, Buddhist extremists, Jain extremists. Religions tend towards conservatism and towards the right, so there is something slightly bizarre about the marrying up of the extreme/‘progressive’ left and Islam.

I think the ‘pushing to extremes’ is happening because of a ‘for us or against us’ mentality on the left. If you are ‘for us’, you support ending poverty, radical action on the environment, the deconstruction of boundaries around sex, the deconstruction of a notion of ‘Britishness’ and the Islamification of society. If you are not, and do not demonstrate that you are, wholeheartedly for all of these things, then you are ‘against us’. ‘Against us’ = far right.
Far right = racist Nazis.
Racist Nazis = scum of the Earth who require heavy-handed punishment and quashing.

This process is generating ‘the far right’, by shifting who and what is deemed far right.

The islamification of society? What are you on about?

Who's talking about the left?

We're discussing the ongoing far right riots. We're calling them far right because the violence in them is perpetrated by racist thugs, because of the language and demands of the people in them and because people have seen swastikas. What have the 'left' got to do with it?

I'm sorry but this is a far right issue. It's far right terrorism.

Saying 'it isn't we' is NOT the same as saying 'not all men.' What a ludicrous thing to say! The vast majority of white people are not racist rioters! But the vast majority of men do have deep rooted sexism and misogyny in them.
