Sex offender granted asylum?

Given the other thread was deleted I'm assuming we aren't allowed to talk about the ongoing criminal incident/investigation.

However it's the top story on the bbc news that a convicted sex offender was granted asylum then has gone on to seemingly commit another violent offence.

Surely there should be a blanket ban on convicted sex offenders being granted asylum?

Good priests try to see the best in people.

Those who decided to grant his third asylum application should have had a far higher index of suspicion about the sincerity of his conversion.

What were they thinking?

They were thinking he is unremovable (he basically is). Get him out of the queue and move on to the next of the tens of thousand claims in it.

JimBobsWife · 02/02/2024 14:31

Ah yes, @Allwelcone it must be his mental health! Why didn't we already think of that?!

It's ironic that for many years we tried to change the regime in his country, to force our way of life to his people, to push our liberal way of thought. And what do we receive in return.
It's time to completely rethink our approach to the whole idea of illegal immigration. If you want to come here its fine, we welcome you but you need to work in a labour camp for the first 10 years, if after this time if you prove that you are a good citizen we will grant you full citizenship.

I'm inclined to agree with you .... but then again if labor camps existed we might all be at risk of being put in there for whatever transgression?

When I see boat loads of men arriving I always think of the women and kids left behind. What must their lives be like, has all the family money been used to get him here? If they get asylum do they send money back or just abandon them. I am sure some bring them over but I do wonder.

They’re generally single young men. Whenever there’s a disaster and the media track down a family the story is usually of a son saving or borrowing to pay a trafficker to go anywhere to get jobs/money/education.

How gullible this is. Asylum on the third for a conversion to Christianity? The Home office used to much tougher than that.

The problem is nice people who want church attendance and see needs before character. Lots of supportive letters from friends at church and community involvement.

The Civil servants deciding on claims are not gullible. They just have to give up on trying to refuse/remove if there’s no prospect of sending anyone home. The current laws and systems don’t allow it.
Hence the Rwanda plan. It’s a deterrent. A big bluff call. ‘OK you’re in fear of your life and that’s your excuse for entering illegally. you will be safe there’.

makeanddo · 02/02/2024 14:54

There was an immigration lawyer in Jeremy Vine today. Evidently under International Law if the sentence is less than 12 months then the person cannot be deported and must be allowed to apply for asylum. The lawyer's stance was that their job is not to judge their clients just support their case. This is one reason why I could not be a lawyer.

She said it's the laws fault and it's up to the government to change it.

Unfortunately I think there are many like this man. They come from countries with very different beliefs and values to ours. They come here because we are soft and because of our easy legal system. They have little, if any, respect for our country, our laws and crucially women and children.

I think it's time for us to know what the process is for assessing an asylum seeker. How do they even start with no paperwork etc? These men are arriving here and lying to get access, if they were genuine they would give their info. I'm not afraid to say that I don't want these young men here however I fear the do gooders and very left leaning civil service have different plans. All we now hear is mental health and how we should treat them better whilst the country cannot even afford basic services for its own population.

Erm, I don't know how it works but if you're granted asylum because you'll be tortured, murdered etc if you go back to your home country, I'm not sure of the morality of refusing asylum on the basis of sexual offending, it would basically be a death sentence.

Better to grant asylum if there are grounds for that then punish sexual offending properly - this is the main problem in this country, asylum seekers and British nationals alike are not prosecuted, convicted an sentenced adequately.

If you risk being losing asylum and being deported, it might act as a deterrent. The morality of granting asylum to a known offender is in itself questionable. We have enough home grown offenders with importing them too.

Although as sexual offences no longer seem to be important enough to record and report, maybe it is also of no matter to let the perpetrators stay here.

The UK government is responsible for the safety of the UK people. We can’t take responsibility for the shitty behaviour of men from countries which allow shitty behaviour by men. Send them to Rwanda or home. Yes it’s removing the problem. I have no issue with that.

I agree.

Are we happy to allow violent men to attack women as long as they do it to women in another country?

That’s such a strange argument. Nobody is happy with that, that doesn’t mean we should let those violent men live here.

@Gloriosaford
Look at seasonal farm work, picking fruits or vegetables. There are some simple work for which we have to import labour from Eastern Europe when we have thousands of illegal immigrants in the hotels.

Its actually more skilled than you would think. Its why we have seasonal workers from eastern europe, they are very fast and efficient.

This country is a fucking disgrace. I hope he dies of sepsis, very slowly...

According to the BBC this morning the current situation is that you have to have been imprisoned for more than a year before asylum is refused. Any crime less than that is not a barrier.

Shock So we don't expect someone to obey the laws of the land in order to be allowed to stay in this country?!

App13 · 02/02/2024 11:41

I believe after his conviction he converted to Christianity, and had a priest prove his conversion. As he came from Afghanistan, he would no longer be safe as a non Muslim and so was allowed to stay on that basis.

Slimey fucker playing the system

It virtue signallers like this that are part of the problem. Like those who stopped a convicted rapist from being deported.
They know Britain is a soft touch that's why they are all trying to get here.

Funny isn't it how the likes of Gary Lineker and his mob are always silent when things like this happen 🤔

I will never stop wondering what went through their head when they later learned what was he being deport for...

QueenBitch666 · 02/02/2024 16:03

MinnieCauldwell · 02/02/2024 12:38

Wish we could just take the women and kids....

They're conveniently left behind

I wouldn't be at all surprised if he's already been found by the public & lying at the bottom of the Thames

That would be justice

Just to point out that that setting is rife with modern slavery. Even EE who were able to work here legally ended up victims

Tracker1234 · 02/02/2024 16:10

You say someone would be deported after a crime but recently despite being convicted a plane load of people stopped a plane taking off and the criminal didn’t get deported!

From memory one of the ringleaders of this was in constant touch with some charity who was telling them how to play it. I wonder if the young women who was at the centre of this had been attacked herself or maybe her sister?

We seem to be our own worst enemy with this sort of thing

Allwelcone · 02/02/2024 13:33

Immigration status totally irrelevant imo, obviously he has MH issues.
Just seen a headline about Bibby Stockholm residents having appalling mh too.
We need to treat asylum seekers better not just refuse entry/ treat them badly.

MH issues my arse 🙄

Witsend101 · 02/02/2024 16:21

Even if we wanted to deport foreign criminals what countries are willing to take them back? We only seem to have agreements with a few countries to return their nationals with criminal records so I think, horrifically, the rest are here to stay whether we like it or not

Tracker1234 · 02/02/2024 16:23

MH issues! Seems to be an excuse for all sorts of behaviours and get out of jail for
everything

EasternStandard · 02/02/2024 16:24

A better way is to deter everyone and then vet people we do take

Do all the checks etc before we say yes

Tracker1234 · 02/02/2024 16:26

Why not have immigration officers in the countries themselves to process people? Oh wait….

You can set stuff up but you still need to deter, as international law means people can arrive outside that
