Sex offender granted asylum?

cordeliachaseatemyhandbag · 02/02/2024 08:16

Given the other thread was deleted I'm assuming we aren't allowed to talk about the ongoing criminal incident/investigation.

However it's the top story on the bbc news that a convicted sex offender was granted asylum then has gone on to seemingly commit another violent offence.

Surely there should be a blanket ban on convicted sex offenders being granted asylum?

Local sex offenders are like, baseline. Why allow more young males, especially those from cultures that do not view women as equals, into the country? This is an unnecessary incident that happened because of the utter indifference of your leadership (and the bureaucracy under them).

Parentofeanda · 02/02/2024 11:13

My friend was raped and murdered by a asylum seeker. I don't deny most are deserving of shelter. But her attacker had been known to police in they're country. Not sure how he got in.

Sweeping generalisation. For everyone with criminal intentions, there are no doubt many more who just want a safe and peaceful life for their families, working hard and contributing.

PickUpFullOfPinkCarnations · 02/02/2024 11:14

Amazingly the media are all over this sex offender as he is an asylum seeker. They don't give a shiny shit about VAWG the rest of the time.

bombastix · 02/02/2024 11:14

How gullible this is. Asylum on the third for a conversion to Christianity? The Home office used to much tougher than that.

The problem is nice people who want church attendance and see needs before character. Lots of supportive letters from friends at church and community involvement.

whereaw · 02/02/2024 11:14

@tiggergoesbounce I don't agree. If I go to another country I would respect their laws and values. I don't believe I have a right to do what I like and stay there regardless.
Why do you want to give criminals like him a chance over people who really deserve it?

It's hardly the same as saying 'fit in or f off' to say 'don't rape women or f off'.
Why should we have to spend our tax money punishing them and (failing to) rehabilitate them, before they are released and do the same thing again?

YouJustDoYou · 02/02/2024 11:15

Of course he was. This is the UK, where the safety of men means more than the safety of women.

tiggergoesbounce · 02/02/2024 11:16

whereaw · 02/02/2024 10:59

@tiggergoesbounce do you not understand? I wasn't born in the uk either. If I commited a sexual assault I would think it was perfectly reasonable that I should have my citizenship revoked. The second crime wouldn't have happened at all if that had been the case.

Oh, i do understand i think if you read my posts, it clearly shows i understand the point trying to be made.

But we have a judicial system here, surely we need to use our judicial system for those who are living here - surely we need to amend our judicial system so it punishes adequately enough.

EasternStandard · 02/02/2024 11:16

Do people think traffickers aren’t selling in what to do to get asylum?

This criminal cottoned on to the converting and it worked

Whatever can be used will be

It was obvious before but here’s the evidence

IClaudine · 02/02/2024 11:18

The heart of the issue is the fact that those who commit VAWG are given lenient sentences or, more often, are never actually prosecuted at all. If this man had been given the sentence he deserved, he could have been kicked out afterwards.

How can we be kept safe when even the police get away with it scot free time and time again?

Bridgetta · 02/02/2024 11:18

But let’s stop pretending that this is unique to the asylum system. It is becoming a recurring theme: police, armed forces, justice system, councils have been complicit, there’s been grooming in outsourced children’s homes, rampant sexual harassment in government. It is ridiculous to make this out as an asylum issue when there are failures on, so many fronts

Put it another way — it’s bad enough in Britain, why make it worse with unvetted men from cultures that do not view women as equals

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 02/02/2024 11:19

'Asylum' indicates that a country you don't belong to and probably have no connection with has opened its doors to you, welcomed you in and is supporting you - or rather that the working people of that country are giving their time and money to your support. Surely that ought to generate some kind of gratitude or recognition- at the very least some element of moral reciprocity in the asylum seeker.

I think we all have a moral duty to not attack people, regardless of asylum status.

I don't think sex offenders should be granted asylum, so I don't think this man should have been here. And I also don't think that sex offences are treated seriously enough or punished properly.
But as a general point, I don't think that those who have been granted asylum have a bigger duty to society, above and beyond a general civic duty everyone should ideally have.

Firstly i expect everyone to respect our laws- i dont want a 2 tier system.

Criminals like him ???
What predators - or Asylum seekers ?

I dont want to give him any chances. I want our justice system to be fit for purpose for all. I want women to be safe from all men. I want punishment to be fitting for all offenders who live in this country.

Why should we spend tax paying money on anyone who does that - because they need it. Does that mean we shouldnt do it for the generations of our own sexual predators who have never paid a penny into the system?

whereaw · 02/02/2024 11:24

@tiggergoesbounce to clarify - criminal asylum seekers.
Why do you think criminals should be granted asylum?

InkySplott · 02/02/2024 11:25

whereaw · 02/02/2024 10:54

@tiggergoesbounce but why should a foreign convicted sex offender be allowed to stay here to then commit more crimes against women and children?
It's not the same thing at all.

Yes we have sex offenders who were born here. There are sex offenders all over the world, but why commit offences in a country that has took you in and helped you and could possibly kick you out if it wanted to .

InkySplott · 02/02/2024 11:27

Plus if asylum seekers were booted out if they commit sexual offences then that would be a deterrent plus if they did get booted out for that offence then it's one less man who is a danger to women.

underneaththeash · 02/02/2024 11:28

There should be a blanket ban on anyone convicted of any offence to be given asylum.

Soubriquet · 02/02/2024 11:29

After watching this, I hope he’s deported and then suffers the consequences of his actions.

That poor woman and child. Why did he target them specifically?

A neighbour says he chased the attacker down a south London street in his slippers.

They can be booted out if the sentence they serve is long enough. Which of course it often isn't, as in this case. Because VAWG is still not treated as seriously as it should be in many cases.

EasternStandard · 02/02/2024 11:34

I don’t want criminals just booted out. The whole system is rigged so this criminal could get in and stay

Change that.

whereaw · 02/02/2024 11:37

@IClaudine what sentence do they have to receive to be automatically deported? Do you know if it happens/ how often?

whereaw · 02/02/2024 11:38

It's also difficult because violent crimes often escalate. So even if the first offence is not bad enough to be deported, it is likely to get worse the second, third, fourth time..

App13 · 02/02/2024 11:41

I believe after his conviction he converted to Christianity, and had a priest prove his conversion. As he came from Afghanistan, he would no longer be safe as a non Muslim and so was allowed to stay on that basis.

I think over 4 years and it can also be considered between 1 and 2 years. This is just from googling, so I could have it wrong!

I don't think it is automatic though. If you want figures I expect they are somewhere.

No he was convicted for a sex offence in 2018. Afterwards he was granted asylum on his third application.

But he shouldn't have been. Ridiculous.
