There’s always people jumping off the pier down there, they ignore the signs/warnings, I’m intrigued why they have arrested someone though.

Polik · 01/06/2023 01:21

I was wondering why someone was arrested. News reports are sparse on details

bombemma · 01/06/2023 01:35

No reports here, how do you know about an incident?

Sorry for the DM link

I m wondering if it was someone on a jet ski who has been arrested. I can't think of anything else that could cause an incident where someone was charged with manslaughter after an accident in the water.

ChiefPearlClutcher · 01/06/2023 01:49

Or an organised activity like paddle boarding that went wrong? 10 people were rescued in all. So sad.

Missingmyusername · 01/06/2023 02:11

Out of control Jet ski I would have thought, hasn’t one person been charged with manslaughter…

dancinginthesky · 01/06/2023 02:14

Tragic. I assumed lifeguard wasn't paying attention- but jet ski makes more sense tbh

IamThegreaterMole · 01/06/2023 02:33

It sounds like they were jumping off the pier, maybe there was an adult with them encouraging them to do it?

BaiesRosesAmbre · 01/06/2023 02:41

How absolutely horrific. I grew up here. So sad to read this and my thoughts go out to their families 💐

That's how I read it too. Someone encouraging people to jump. Hope it's not a father and his children (not that he would have 10 kids, but maybe trying to be fun dad and getting others to join).

The article says not to speculate, which I am clearly doing so apologies.
But as someone who leaves near the sea and trying to drum in to the children the safety aspects of not jumping in from piers, groynes, sea walls it does strike a nerve.
Sorry for the loss of life and hope those injured recover

One of the reports said the man arrested was 'on the water' so in a boat/jetski I would think.

Interesting so many on here leapt to the idea the kids were at fault.

Their poor families.

UpsetDustyOwl · 01/06/2023 06:25

It’s not the children who are at fault. We live in an island and the lack of water safety education is disgraceful. Every year, as the weather heats up, there are more and more cases.
Our education system needs to include this, even if you don’t live near the sea.

Teachers can't include everything on the curriculum. It's up to parents to kids their kids life skills etc.

There isn't one person on this thread before your comment who has said this.

Why have you introduced it as an idea?

The news suggests at least 10 people involved, which suggests something horrific such as a jet ski ploughing through a crowd rather than simply poor water safety education among kids.

YouJustDoYou · 01/06/2023 07:01

I'm thinking jetski too. Entitled wankers who come in on them, absolutely blasting through the water with no care at all, they often ignore/don't care about the buoys meant to act as a don't cross these waters and have often been seen coming through swimming water, one of the sea swimmers almost got hit the other day because some areshole was on the wrong side of the buoys, they're an absolute menace but as there are no police around etc they just do what they want, behave how they want every single season.

Schools can't cover everything. Unfortunately, that's down to the parents but teenagers can be stubborn and will do what they like regardless.

Isn't that the parents job to keep their children safe?

It's what every news report I've read has said...

BarrelOfOtters · 01/06/2023 07:20

Jet skis, no idea if this was, are an absolute menace.

AlanJohnsonsBeemer · 01/06/2023 07:29

RIP to the poor children who lost their lives, it is tragic whatever happened. I initially read they were jumping off the pier but this appears to have come from one man saying he “thought” they were jumping of the pier or similar. So this may have been that he saw them and The Mail were using careful wording or it may be that he assumed this as kids do jump off the pier. I agree that “on the water” suggests a speedboat or jet ski. I live locally and they are an absolute menace. There were so many ridiculous rumours flying round yesterday including a shark attack, I will wait to see what the investigation says.
