One smells a rat....

fromlie sky news

The wife of a man who has come 'back from the dead' after vanishing in a canoeing mystery has moved to the central American country of Panama where she has opened a bank account, Sky News has learnt.

John DarwinSky sources understand that some of the proceeds of the sale of her homes near Hartlepool have been deposited in an account in Panama.

In 2002, the smashed red canoe of John Darwin was found washed up on a beach off Seaton Carew, leading rescue teams to conclude that the chances of finding him alive were "practically nil".

But Cleveland Police said the married father-of-two walked fit and well into a London police station at 5.30pm on Saturday.

Mr Darwin is now staying with family in the south east of England and Cleveland officers hope to speak to him today.

I guess that would depend on the circumstances of his disappearance though.

If he'd had a breakdown/was suffering from amnesia then he is just as much a victim of this as the rest of his family and should still have some entitlements to assets etc? but presumably if his motives were more selfish he might lose those entitlements. but obv just speculating.

me too tbh. what relevance is the wife's south american bank account?

So there is every possibility that she has absconded with his share of the cash and he is dobbing her in by reappearing because he has nothing to lose.
And yes, I know it is ugly speculation about a man who may have mental issues, but my mind just works like that.

wannaBe · 03/12/2007 13:11

that doesn't make sense though. If she'd never moved on, never sold the houses, would he have just stayed missing for ever?

OP posts:
CarmenerryChristmas · 03/12/2007 13:14

No I'm speculating that this was an arrangement between them that he would go missing and after the specified time, get the insurance, sell the houses and they would both take off for a new life somewhere.

CarmenerryChristmas · 03/12/2007 13:15

Sorry , that she would get the insurance and sell the houses.

Desiderata · 03/12/2007 13:16

This thing is , if he really had been out canoeing, and his smashed up canoe was found, he would almost certainly be dead, as the police originally surmised.

So how did it end up in the sea?

wannaBe · 03/12/2007 13:16

or maybe it was all planned. They had two houses, they couldn't afford the mortgage but they couldn't sell them either. so he disappeared, and was then presumed dead. so the wife claims on the life insurance and the mortgage is wiped out. then the wife sells the houses, puts the money in a south american country where it can't be touched and hey presto, husband appears again, he goes to the country where his wife is now resident, they have a happy reunion and disappear off to wherever to live off the proceeds.

Well they could have both smashed up the canoe.
And that is what I was suggesting Wannabe but I think that she might have gone off without him/with or to someone else so he his dobbing her in by reappearing iyswim.

Found this:

"Normally in the UK a missing person may be declared legally dead no less than seven years after disappearing without explanation, unless other convincing evidence of the person?s death can be shown.
Until it can be established to the court?s satisfaction that a person has died, the financial assets of the individual are frozen. No one can claim an inheritance or dispose of the missing person?s property in the meantime."

there is a presumption of death after 7 years absence-so she didn't quite get there!

WendyWeber · 03/12/2007 13:27

He should have come back with a big black beard and lurked around her house.

WendyWeber · 03/12/2007 13:28

Like this!

saffy202 · 03/12/2007 13:29

Unless they were in it together. Agreed to wait the 7 years but then she met someone else and somehow managed to sell the properties and do a flit. Now he's found out and has come back for his share!

Piffle · 03/12/2007 13:30

you can sell if you can protect the lissing persons interests properly.
presumably she has taken half

bossybritches · 03/12/2007 13:32

How peculiar ???

Awaits details......

paulaplumpbottom · 03/12/2007 13:33

So what he just suddenly rememberd who he was?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 03/12/2007 13:38

Gotta love the speculation on news threads

The Mumsnet Detective Agency. It could really work

I agree though, that there is a fishy element in all this. I'm sure that when the Police find out where he has been 'hiding' these last five years, we'll know if it's dodgy or not.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 03/12/2007 13:39

Snort! at the bearded men ww

bossybritches · 03/12/2007 13:47

Every sympathy if it is truly amnesia..........but how convenient-my sceptic radar is tingling!
