Unfortunately I think Bush will win again. I think the latest Bin Laden tape will actually help him and make the difference. What do you guys think?

RE the oil issue. Saying that we need oil does not mean that we have to support the neocon plan for colonial rule in the Middle East, it just means that the Middle East is geo-politically important. I find it hard to see how anyone can argue that the Iraq in its current state is a stabilising force in that region. The US invaded Iraq without any real understanding of what was likely to happen, it did little to promote a stable transfer of power in the early days after the invasion and it continues to have no idea about what to do. Recognising the importance of oil for the world economy surely should involve thinking strategically about how to promote long-term political stability in the Middle East. That will only happen when the large numbers of people who feel dispossessed and disenfranchised feel that they have a good reason to support political stability, rather than Islamist fundamentalism. Justice and peace go together, they are not alternatives.

I know agy, but let's face it, who in their right mind would want to be President?

Another vote here (no pun intended) for not getting my hopes up, I can't stand the suspense...

At DD1's school today they had an election. All the kids could vote for their favorite flavor of ice cream - chocolate, vanilla or strawberry. They had a little voting booth and they all marked their ballots and waited in line to cast their votes. Very cute. Hopefully the results of that election will be clear by tomorrow, even if this one isn't!

Heathcliffscathy · 02/11/2004 20:11

what a great way of promoting the democratic process katg...and how cute!!!!

melsy · 02/11/2004 20:17

That is very cute katg!!

So any news ?? My sky box is kerplinked due to scaffolding , so no CNN

KateandtheGirls · 02/11/2004 20:26

A week or so ago my daughter heard John Kerry's name mentioned on the news and said to me, "Mum they said John Kerry". I asked her who he was and how she knew his name, and she told me he is the president and her teacher had told her that. So they discuss it at school a little bit but she hasn't quite got all the details straight! I reluctantly told her that he wasn't the president...yet...

All I know is it's going to be close and there's a big turnout.

doobydoo · 02/11/2004 21:42

Hi Again
I reckon an egomaniac would want to be president.
Just put ds to bed what's the latest?

prefernot · 02/11/2004 22:42

Only a BBC1 update which says, so far, 51% Kerry, 49% Bush. YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

colinsmommy · 02/11/2004 22:47

How is BBC1 getting updates when all they are doing on the news channels here is predict the time of when the winner will be made known?

KateandtheGirls · 02/11/2004 23:06

Good question CM. Are the US networks so scared of getting it wrong again that they won't say anything, but the BBC has no such qualms?

Hooray if that's the case, prefernot. What about the individual states, that's the big question. Florida, Pennsylvania and Ohio?

doobydoo · 02/11/2004 23:10

I reckon Kerry but then again I have a niggling fear ir will be Bush I wish they would hurry up!
Wonder how Blair is feeling.(assuming he is able to "feeL").
If Kerry gets in will he pull the troops out of Iraq?

JoolsToo · 02/11/2004 23:13

doobydoo - I don't think he can do that - they did it once - didn't go down too well!

doobydoo · 02/11/2004 23:30

Ah does anyone know what he has said he will do?

expatkat · 02/11/2004 23:41

Just got a staggering e-mail from my dad, a diehard Republican all his life, saying that both he AND my mother voted for Kerry.

What could this mean if other diehard Republicans are similarly fed up with Bush?

I am almost too nervous to sleep. . .

Chandra · 03/11/2004 00:09

How is it going???? any news???

Chandra · 03/11/2004 00:13

Colinsmummy, because if you have not realised yet, news are severely edited in the US. I was living in the border with Mexico at the time of the Gulf War and you won't believe how triumphalist news were in the US, they didn't even mentioned if a plane had went down until various days afterwards, and I remember something particularly interesting, Bush (father) received a shower of stones by a multitude in a visit to Panama, the news in the American channels depicted a bunch of little kids waveing flags to Mr. President!

colinsmommy · 03/11/2004 00:32

Projections are so far Bush-34 electoral votes, Kerry-3.

Chandra · 03/11/2004 00:39

Thanks Colinsmummy, how are you? I hope you are feeling better this week

colinsmommy · 03/11/2004 00:41

Pneumonia has turned into a sinus infection, but finally got the right antibiotics and am doing a bit better today for the first time in forever. Thanks Chandra. Hope your dissertation is coming along.
Now it is Bush 39, Kerry 3.

Chandra · 03/11/2004 00:55

Colinsmummy, glad you are feeling better .

I will dread turning the radio on tomorrow morning.

PS. The disertation is coming along, badly, but comming

colinsmommy · 03/11/2004 01:10

Here you go, Chandra. I went to mop the floor, and when I was done it is now Bush 66 and Kerry 77. Maybe I shouldn't watch anymore as it is good for Kerry.

KateandtheGirls · 03/11/2004 03:52

Alright!

Pennsylvania has just been projected as going to Kerry. All is not lost...

geekgrrl · 03/11/2004 06:36

ahhh - rubbish night with the kids turns into rubbish day when checking the election result on yahoo.... looks like that pillock's got himself another 4 years
Must bit tongue when dropping dd off at school and facing throngs of undoubtedly pleased US army parents.....

RudyDudy · 03/11/2004 06:39

not looking good...

Posey · 03/11/2004 06:59

He got Florida, they just said on the news. (We've now got Cbeebies so can't watch anymore)

JoolsToo · 03/11/2004 07:09

Ohio still to come (please God) - but I'm not as hopeful as last night - bloody BBC getting my hope up!!!!

Those voting queues were something else tho eh?
