Unfortunately I think Bush will win again. I think the latest Bin Laden tape will actually help him and make the difference. What do you guys think?

Thanks melsy, that helps. I think I know what you mean about the 527 groups now.

A law was passed to limit the amount any individual could donate to a candidate to $1000. 527 groups were set up to get around this. people can donate to them and they produce adverts / campaign on behalf of the party and not the candidate.

melsy · 02/11/2004 09:06

Was that the fear of nightmares programme tex ??

What I thought poignant is that 30-40% of americans go to church , they know this the spins doctors and partisan groups , so are targeting there votes this way to people in church on Sunday, by donating to the church to have the preists rally for them.

RudyDudy · 02/11/2004 09:08

Got to go and do some work

Happy voting to the Americans! Put your cross somewhere that counts and make us all happier people

JuniperDewdrop · 02/11/2004 09:09

Totally agree it'll probably be Bush because of the fear he's instilled

tex111 · 02/11/2004 09:09

It was the commentary the night the tape first came out. I sat up and watched it with a friend in Texas and we compared broadcasts. Amazing the different approach the US media has. BBC broke the news, did some commentary then went on to other stories, weather, sports, etc but the US news (I think she was watching CNN. I was watching BBC 24) stayed with it non-stop which made it a bigger story.

Has anyone seen the bracelets What would Jesus do? I wonder what he'd do today if he were able to vote?

tex111 · 02/11/2004 09:13

Gotta go jump in the shower. Got a kitchen guy coming in an hour, but I'll be back on later. Thanks for the interesting info and insights!

DH and I got our absentee ballots in early (he's a dual citizen). We put the crosses (as you put it) where they count.

JoolsToo · 02/11/2004 09:16

from a British point of view - KERRY - Please - Bush is unhinged

Mommy2Ro · 02/11/2004 09:21

But of course, Kerry. Absolu.

My DH is from Ireland and has seen what religion can do to mess up an otherwise perfectly good school/culture/country (we do like Ireland, don't get me wrong). I grew up Mus-o-luth-ic (muslim father, lutheran mother, catholic school), tho I don't consider myself any of the above. Had v good experience in school, had inclusive theology classes, etc. From what I understand Jesus would not vote for Bush. Jesus had the good of all people in mind...

JoolsToo · 02/11/2004 09:23

mmm agree - Bush is going to do tho isn't he?

expatkat · 02/11/2004 09:28

I am optimistically thinking Kerry will win. I know, abstractly, that there are huge contingents of Bush supporters in the US. But because I know so few of them, I'm going indulge my delusional outlook, for a few more hours at least, that Bush will only get 5 votes, 2 of them being SofiaAmes and Uwila.

But seriously: I think a lot of people who were pro Bush last time are disillusioned by the dishonesty etc. And, unlike tex, I can't imagine the Bin Laden tape will help either candidate.

I do concede, though, that I find it a little hard to respect Kerry's "waffling" and I do wish the democrats had a better candidate. I think his comparative wish-washiness will hurt him.

Mommy2Ro · 02/11/2004 09:33

Kat, I have to say I've had the same feeling. I don't have a real sense of what Kerry is all about. I guess I'm just so upset (not that you can tell, ha, ha) about Bush.

It's the lack of a strong demo candidate that got Bush into office in the first place. V daunting...

Uwila · 02/11/2004 10:08

Always fun to be the odd one out (and probably about to be the object of a mumsnet mud sling)

BUSH BUSH BUSH... keep him in. Life as we know it depends on him.

PS The newspapers quoted below are radically liberally biased.

GO BUSH / GO BUSH / GO BUSH
The lives of our men and women in Iraq depned on his leadership. (British and American)

beachyhead · 02/11/2004 10:12

'From what I understand Jesus would not vote for Bush'

Got to be the classic quote of all time!!!!!

Hopefully Kerry will win although I do like all the balls ups that Bush makes - comedian man!!!

nm · 02/11/2004 10:15

Although it pains me to say it I predict Bush will get in - although that does leave the door open for Hilary next time!

welshmum · 02/11/2004 10:21

I find it very perplexing that the system in the US allows for someone for someone as uninspiring as Kerry to win the Democrat nomination. It was pointed up by hearing even a weak Clinton speak - that soundbite about voting for a politician who encourages you to hope and to think was classic Clinton.
That said I would love it if Bush lost - the idea of an increasingly illiberal, isolationist, warmongering America is very scary.

JoolsToo · 02/11/2004 10:23

Uwila - you know I'm a British conservative but I've been watching the American journey with interest and whilst I can't claim to have any in depth knowledge - far from it - what decided me that Kerry should win was the Jonathan Dimbleby programme on Sunday. It was completely unbiased (I think!) but Bushes agents came over a slightly arrogant and quite blinkered. I found the Bush/religion thing really quite scarey - I mean if he was a Muslim for example and he followed their holy book would the American people be happy with that situation?
Kerry at least SAYS he is prepared to interact more with his European allies and that can only be a good thing - America has lost a lot of its standing in the world over recent years.

Uwila · 02/11/2004 10:43

Like many midwesterners, I could care any less about pleasing France, Germany, and Russia. Some of theothers, maybe. France and Russia are the biggest hypocrits there ever were.

France was gainst the war because of their interest in existing oil contract. So whilst they were putting American down for going to war over oil, they were against it for that very reason!

And, as for Russia (who have actually come out in support of Bush), let's just advertise that that horrible horrible Beslan school massacre was all about oil, too. Did you know that? Those rebels believe themselves to be freedom fighters trying to regain Checnya. Russia will not give up Chechnya because they profit from the oil which is produced by the Russian state owned iol company (sorry, but the name of the company escapes me just now).

So. like many midwesterners, I frankly don't give a rat's ass about pleasing the hypocrites of the continent. Now, I do not mean this toward the countries who simply oppose the war. Spain for instance. While I think pulling out was a mistake, I can see that it was their right to make that choice. But, the French have always hated Americans. And, they always will. It didn't start with a Bush presidency.

Uwila · 02/11/2004 10:44

Oh, I can't believe I typed that. It's my pet peeve. Meant to say "Like many midwesterners, I couldN'T care any less..."

Anteater · 02/11/2004 10:49

Vote for Bartlet

welshmum · 02/11/2004 10:51

Hurray for Bartlett. I agree, I'm voting for him

Heathcliffscathy · 02/11/2004 11:13

Uwila, your stance doesn't surprise me given that you work for haliburton!

i might be a totally outrageous optimist (in fact...i know i am ) but newsnight were implying last night that Kerry may have it due to much bigger (mostly democrat) turn-out than last time...please god!

JoolsToo · 02/11/2004 11:28

Uwila - a lot a British people find the French a bit - difficult shall we say - but if we're talking global harmony (I hope we are) you HAVE to interact with everyone (including France AND the UN!).

Between us we've made a right balls of Iraq - God help us if those two B's ever get the chance to take us into some other conflict!!!

I don't think you need worry tho - Bush will likely survive the contest and no doubt Bliar (no spelling mistake!) will worm his way into Downing Street yet again
