Tally Ho!

OP posts:
beansmum · 16/09/2004 22:31

which is why it's so silly to ban hunting, angling would never be banned

stupidgirl · 16/09/2004 22:35

I agree, andling probably will never be banned, but why does that make a ban on hunting silly????

beansmum · 16/09/2004 22:41

why are there two different sets of rules? i don't see why two similar (hunting an animal, not for food) sports are treated differently just because a fox is more photogenic

stupidgirl · 16/09/2004 22:43

But that's like saying if we can't prevent all kinds of cruelty there's no point stopping any of them.

beansmum · 16/09/2004 22:46

thats if you agree that its cruel, i don't think it is really

Avalon · 16/09/2004 22:46

But we can prevent battery farming - and we don't.

stupidgirl · 16/09/2004 22:47

You don't think hunting is cruel?

beansmum · 16/09/2004 22:49

i think we all have better things to worry about and a few foxes getting killed really doesn't bother me.

beansmum · 16/09/2004 22:51

although i am sitting here discussing it at 10.50pm so maybe i don't have better things to worry about

stupidgirl · 16/09/2004 22:53

It bothers most of the British public.

As I said before Avalon, there is a long way to go, before we can claim to be a humane society, but it is a step in the right direction.

Portree · 16/09/2004 22:53

My SIL hunts and says that often the fox gets away and that very few are actually killed. She doesn't hunt because of any kind of bloolust but as a social thing and to exercise her horse. I personally don't see it as cruel. Pointless perhaps. IMO, it's that whole disney-generation thing and excessive anthropomorphology.

beansmum · 16/09/2004 22:56

i think it's something like 1 in 4 hunts actually kills a fox, not sure where that figure came from though, just remember reading it somewhere

stupidgirl · 16/09/2004 22:58

It's true that more often than not the fox gets away, but that doesn't make it any more fair, or any less cruel when a fox gets caught.

It's nothing to do with anthropomorphism, it's to do with being a humane and civilised society and we can't claim to be that while we allow such barbarity to continue in the name of 'sport'. This is not sport as someone said earlier, sport is where the competitors are equally matched. Hardly the case with hunting.

Avalon · 16/09/2004 23:00

In a humane society stupidgirl, would people eat meat?

Portree · 16/09/2004 23:00

Stupidgirl, are you vegetarian?

Portree · 16/09/2004 23:00

Woops, same train of thought, crossed posts.

stupidgirl · 16/09/2004 23:01

No they wouldn't Avalon, and yes I am portree

Portree · 16/09/2004 23:03

Do you wear leather at all? Just curious, not trying to rile you.

beansmum · 16/09/2004 23:04

i dont think we can claim to be a humane and civilised society anyway, a few foxes make no difference when you think of all the humans getting killed. going to bed now, will think of some really amazing arguments to prove my point. what was my point again? think i've lost it slightly

stupidgirl · 16/09/2004 23:06

Portree, no I don't wear leather, either, I have fab non-leather dm's which I live in. Plus some cheap, nasty non-leather shoes from BHS for work.

Addmittedly I buy leather shoes for the kids, but only because I can't afford £80 per child every 4 months for non leather ones...

Portree · 16/09/2004 23:06

I've joined this late and lost it too. isms and ologies round the wrong way. But I guess it's got everyone talking about it.

Portree · 16/09/2004 23:08

Stupidgirl, I don't agree with your stance but I do admire enormously the courage of your convictions. Respect

stupidgirl · 16/09/2004 23:09

Beansmum, you're probably right that we can't claim to be civilised with all the atrocities going on in the world

I still think any move which eliminates suffering, however small or insignificant it may seem is a good thing.

I have to go now as dd has just woken with the most horrible cough an is feeling very sorry for herself, poor mite.

I will check back on this though - will be interested to hear your argumentts which will prove your point Beansmum. Probably will not be able to get back here before Sunday night though becaus eof work...

stupidgirl · 16/09/2004 23:10

Thank you Portree

Avalon · 16/09/2004 23:11

You all go to bed too early.
