oh big wup.

97% of the electorate voted for Labour in 1997 when they said they would ban hunting. They have. Big deal.

And I live in the country and my husbands cousin is master of the hunt.

But it's still rubbish and so NOT a massive, intrinsic part of country life.

beansmum · 16/09/2004 21:50

i'm sure i'm going to really annoy some people by saying this but hunting is an important part of country life, and its typical 'old labour' class envy getting rid of it.

of course not everyone who rides hunts, probably most people who ride don't hunt.

beansmum · 16/09/2004 21:53

still not managed to explain myself properly, just seems like its the people who can afford to keep their own horses and have that sort of lifestyle that are bothering the politicians, if it was just about a couple of foxes getting killed there wouldn't be such a fuss

Avalon · 16/09/2004 21:53

Really, enid? I didn't think turnout had ever been 97%!

stupidgirl · 16/09/2004 21:55

Class envy? You're not serious???

I want hunting banned because I object to the barbarity of chasing a defenceless animal to exhaustion before ripping it to pieces. It isn't about class, it's about cruelty.

Bloodjunkies.

Those who hurt animals are far more likely to go on to hurt humans too.

stupidgirl · 16/09/2004 21:57

Avalon, that isn't turn out at the elections, that is voting in opinion polls

beansmum · 16/09/2004 22:05

how does hunting make you more likely to hurt a human, that's rubbish.

not sure that i am serious about class envy, interesting thought though

miggy · 16/09/2004 22:12

Uhu-No, I have not in the past "chosen" which laws to abide by-Do not use a mobile phone whilst driving and would never do anything to potentially harm or inconvenience another human being. I never claimed that the whole countryside was behind hunting actually
Stupidgirl-any suggestions for 150 mature/unhousetrained/destructive hunting dogs-thats just one pack. Cant use beagles as drag hounds.

stupidgirl · 16/09/2004 22:14

It has been proven that people who hurt animals are more likely to go on to hurting people. Many murderers and torturers have 'practised' on animals before progressing to humans.

Sorry, but the class envt thing is a load of bs

enid · 16/09/2004 22:15

97% of the electorate, not the population as a whole.

and hunting is NOT an important part of country life - anywhere, full stop. end of story.

stupidgirl · 16/09/2004 22:15

Why can't beagles be used for drag-hunting miggy?

Eve · 16/09/2004 22:16

I would like to say having a horse does not imply a certain lifestyle, I used to have my own hourse and scraped every extra penny together to keep him.

I now ride out of stables and most peole I know who keep horses are not wealthy, do not live in mansions and do not have an affluent lifestyle.

It a question of choices and priorities and do they wish to buy a new bridle as opposed to a new handbag or shoes.....

enid · 16/09/2004 22:18

actually I just plucked that figure from the air. and its wrong. but it was a lot anyway.

And whats keeping horses got to do with the price of fish?

Tinker · 16/09/2004 22:19

Well said edam
Today's Indie Note the comment about the ban in Scotland having no impact on horses and hounds

Portree · 16/09/2004 22:20

I wish the hunt would ride through my back garden and get rid of the horrible fox that likes to bask there. Sadly it can run faster than I can chuck a brick at it so it still survives.

MeanBean · 16/09/2004 22:21

What's wrong with class envy? No social improvement in history would ever have happened without it.

enid · 16/09/2004 22:22

its not that expensive to keep some old nag anyway. why on earth would anyone be jealous of people that do?

pixel · 16/09/2004 22:22

There is this perception that if you have a horse you must be rich and snobby. I have had this for over 20 years even though like most owners I know I have to scrimp and save to keep my pony. (My christmas presents from my family always include rugs etc and one year my mum bought me shavings for his stable. She didn't wrap them though!)
One woman at work was always having digs until I showed her what it cost to keep the pony and asked her innocently what she spent on cigarettes each week. She went very quiet and never mentioned the subject again!
Although most people wouldn't base their opinions for or against hunting on 'class' there is a small element that creeps in. And no I don't hunt and never have.

enid · 16/09/2004 22:23

well I am posh and i still think hunting is a big yawn and couldn't care less if they ban it.

beansmum · 16/09/2004 22:25

stupidgirl- i don't think you can compare a fox hunt to someone practicing their murdering/torturing skills on an animal.

stupidgirl · 16/09/2004 22:26

Don't you, beansmum? It is cruelty for cruelty's sake - same thing in my book.

Avalon · 16/09/2004 22:27

If hunting is banned, is angling next?

stupidgirl · 16/09/2004 22:28

Lets hope so.

beansmum · 16/09/2004 22:28

nobody cares about fish, they're not cute and fluffy.

stupidgirl · 16/09/2004 22:29

Perhaps not beansmum, but they have central nervous systems and are capable of feeling pain.
