Another Novichok Poisoning?

Just breaking news now, how awful, I wonder how on Earth it's happening?

OP posts:
PurpleNailVarnish · 08/07/2018 23:20

For me it's not just the 'othering' of homeless people but of drug users too.

LanguidLobster · 09/07/2018 00:54

Purple I agree, it's not the point.

She was a British citizen who accidentally got drawn into some game about highly active and illegal nerve agents and lost her life.

Her practices are irrelevant aside from it might pinpoint where the remainder of this stuff is in Salisbury.

NeverTwerkNaked · 09/07/2018 07:42

Totally agree with you Purple/Helena/Lobster

IrmaFayLear · 09/07/2018 09:13

Neither were homeless, actually.

And implying they got less than excellent care is ridiculous, because the authorities are desperate to find out where they became contaminated.

Given that both were addicts, it surely was reasonable of medics to assume initially that an overdose was the reason for the call-out. If a victim had been a large 50-year-old man i’m sure the first thought would be heart attack, and so on.

IntelligentYetIndecisive · 09/07/2018 09:24

She may well have been malnourished as well as being an alcoholic and possible drug addict. Add a little self neglect and you have a recipe for disaster.

As well as Novichok poisoning, there may well have been withdrawal symptoms and the consequences of poor self care/malnourishment.

Poor woman. Her family are probably all over the place and inundated with press reporters.

LanguidLobster · 09/07/2018 09:42

I don't think medical care is amiss and no-one is criticising her care apart from her distraught mother (Salisbury hospital must be the world experts by now...) I was complaining about the press.

Even though they have backtracked furiously they are still sneaking in sentences like 'Dawn, who has never worked', it isn't necessary.

Poor woman would be completely taken aback if she knew she'd hit headline news, the PM made a statement of condolances and was a political pawn.

Unfortunately it IS because of stereotyping around substance misuse that it wasn't noticed for a few days that it was nerve agent

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 09/07/2018 09:46

I don’t think saying that the delay in treatment might have contributed to her death is necessarily saying that she didn’t get excellent care. The two things aren’t mutually exclusive.

The press on the other hand should leave her family alone to grieve and stop trawling their way through her life in order fill column space.

Nerve agent poisoning inquiry spreads to Swindon as car seized

Police remove vehicle from street 40 miles from Salisbury after death of Dawn Sturgess

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/jul/10/nerve-agent-poisoning-inquiry-spreads-to-swindon-car-seized-dawn-sturgess

PerkingFaintly · 10/07/2018 13:07

More about the car:

Novichok victim 'a gentle soul', says family
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-44779969

The BBC understands the white Audi belonged to a paramedic who had been with Ms Sturgess in an ambulance when she fell ill.

Local residents said the paramedic had told them he got bodily fluids on him, but he had been checked over by doctors and given the "all-clear".

His car was sealed and taken away on the back of a truck.

Residents also claimed he had told them both his car and his clothes were being taken to the government laboratory at Porton Down to be destroyed.

Wiltshire Police said the public "should not be alarmed by this," adding: "Those involved have the training and expertise to safely remove the vehicle."

PerkingFaintly · 10/07/2018 13:12

From the Guardian article, they've also seized a van Charlie Rowley had travelled in, and have also tested and declared clear a bus Rowley and Sturgess travelled in.

Sounds like a huge ongoing effort.

RunMummyRun68 · 10/07/2018 14:04

what about the ambulance they travelled in?

Amesbury novichok incident: Public told not to pick up objects 'containing liquid or gel

Warning comes as police hunt for container of novichok handled by Dawn Sturgess and Charlie Rowley

More from that statement from her family Perking.

“Dawn will always be remembered by us as a gentle soul who was generous to a fault,” a statement added.

“She would do anything for anybody and those who knew Dawn would know that she would gladly give her last penny to somebody in need.

“She had the biggest of hearts and she will be dreadfully missed by both her immediate and wider family.”

LanguidLobster · 10/07/2018 19:14

Oh wow, the bloke is regaining consciousness

PerkingFaintly · 10/07/2018 19:34

Excellent news! Fingers crossed for him.

Novichok: Man exposed to nerve agent is conscious
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-44779499

Director of nursing Lorna Wilkinson said: "[Charlie Rowley] is in a critical but stable condition, and is now conscious.
"While this is welcome news, clearly we are not out of the woods yet.
"Charlie is still very unwell and will continue to require specialist, round-the-clock care here at Salisbury District Hospital."

SmileAndNod · 10/07/2018 21:17

Fingers crossed that he continues to make a recovery and can help the police piece together what happened.

LanguidLobster · 11/07/2018 06:19

@SmileAndNod there was a good article in the guardian yesterday about how the hostel residents felt, one mentioned Charlie was quite dependent on Dawn and it will be a huge blow to him and they were a good couple.

Fingers crossed he recovers little by little and be able to help with isolating where any remaining material may be. I wouldn't have thought he'd be able to talk as yet but it's so positive he appears to be pulling through

SmileAndNod · 11/07/2018 06:49

That is going to be terribly sad for him. Going to take a look at that article.

I still can't quite understand the whole thing, and they've never really got to the bottom of the March incident.

Thank goodness that it wasn't a child that inadvertently came into contact.

Salisbury was only just starting to recover as well.

LanguidLobster · 11/07/2018 12:24

He's talking a bit now, such lovely news for his family and people that love him. Out of critical. I hope Dawn's family can take some comfort he pulled through.

Really hope this all gets resolved. I know this is sheer curiosity but I wonder how the Skripals are getting on? I assumed the daughter would go back to Russia.

Bit confused about the white Audi taken from Swindon as well.

CantankerousCamel · 12/07/2018 20:16

They’ve just carted another of Salisbury’s homeless off in hazmat suits

Looks like another poisoning

CantankerousCamel · 12/07/2018 20:16

The Audi belonged to the smack dealer who sold the smack to the guy at JBH who sold it to Dawn and Charlie

maxiflump1 · 12/07/2018 22:07

@CantankerousCamel the Audi belonged to one of the paramedics apparently.

And it appears that the male tonight was a local homeless guy who was shouting that he had the containing with the poison in hence the huge response. Nothing to suggest he has been poisoned as they've reopened the road.

gluteustothemaximus · 12/07/2018 22:15

Just wondering if anyone wants to donate to this www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/john-baker-house

20 residents were moved from there, and they've lost all their belongings.

CantankerousCamel · 12/07/2018 23:45

He was shouting ‘I’ve been Novichocked’ as he walked past Tesco. Not the best move. Of course they have to shut the bloody town down because of a drunk.

Still feel just about safe enough to go and grab brekker in the morning

LanguidLobster · 13/07/2018 07:12

@Cantankerous oh is that what happened! Hope brekker was good.

I was being nosy upthread about the Skripals, apparently daughter hasn't gone back to Russia and they're in a safe house here. She had a fiance in Russia who had links to intelligence service, must be hard for her mistrusting him now and being away from her dog.

Just really hope Charlie Rowley pulls through and can assist police with where any dangerous chemicals are. I did think they told him about his partner a little soon.

Donated to the hostel, it must have been very upsetting for them, thanks for link @gluteus
