Another Novichok Poisoning?

Just breaking news now, how awful, I wonder how on Earth it's happening?

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/07/2018 23:11

Perhaps they came into contact with it recently?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/07/2018 23:22

Shall we all gather on www.mumsnet.com/Talk/in_the_news/3296465-salisbury-two-in-critical-condition this thread? There are now three live threads and if we can consolidate on to one it's an awful lot easier (though fascinating to watch how different threads diverge...)

meditrina · 04/07/2018 23:26

Perhaps they came into contact with it recently?

So there's a new (possibly still unknown) contaminated site that people have come into contact with recently (within last hours/day or so).

That's pretty unsettling, because if there were one unknown site how many more unknowns could there be?

bevelino · 04/07/2018 23:33

I am not a conspiracy theorist but I do think a story will be created by officials to explain this second poisoning.

CherryPavlova · 04/07/2018 23:35

I’m not usually a conspiracy theorist but it is very close to Porton Down.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 04/07/2018 23:50

That’s exactly why I don’t think the statement from the police is as reassuring as they meant it to be, meditrina. The fact that there’s no evidence of them being in the same area as the previously decontaminated areas doesn’t mean much when there so many unknowns about the person who carried out the original poisoning and any areas that might be associated with them.

HelenaDove · 04/07/2018 23:56

Would leftover Novichok from early March now have the same potency after all this time. We had the "Beast from the East" in early March and then MORE snow on St Patricks Day weekend.

and i know it doesnt feel like it now but there has been rain as well.

coming across an applicator after all this time doesnt sound feasible.

meditrina · 05/07/2018 06:27

HelenaDove - yes, nerve agents can be stable and persist for a long time, even if exposed to the elements.

meditrina · 05/07/2018 07:08

(PS: sticking with this thread, as it is the longer/more active one)

AuntieStella · 05/07/2018 07:10

I've just seen this on the news - it seems like a very major police operation is now underway.

Public are being told it's low risk, but being advised to wash clothing and wipe surfaces.

They also said that although it's a Novichok, they have yet to establish if it is same batch as poisoned the Skripals

TokyoSushi · 05/07/2018 07:24

I suppose that's the key now, is it the same batch? If it is then there will be some sort of explanation but I suppose the big question is, what if it's not?

Do you think there's any possible way it's coming from Porton Down?

OP posts:
FuckPants · 05/07/2018 07:31

They probably have stumbled upon where the Novichok was disposed of, I seriously doubt that even Russia would be stupid enough to target two British Nationals so they could scream 'FAKE NEWS' but nonetheless it is extremely worrying.

Mrsemcgregor · 05/07/2018 07:39

Security minister being grilled on BBC Breakfast right now.

AuntieStella · 05/07/2018 07:40

There's an expert on BBC Breakfast right now, who is not the most convincing speaker

the BBC report suggested that there are previously unknown contaminated sites, and that this couple might have stumbled onto one. It said the couple had visited Salisbury, but they didn't say when (or if they did, I missed that bit - anyone seen/heard a report which does include timeline?)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/07/2018 08:36

ok, I'll stick with this thread too.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/07/2018 08:47

It is very confusing.

I keep typing and then deleting my thoughts as my mind wanders into pure speculation. I guess the working hypothesis at the moment is that somehow they came into contact with contaminants from 4 months ago.

Part of me still boggles though at noticing that the Vote Leave campaign being thought to have acted illegally seems to be nowhere in headlines. I do wonder where it would have been on the news hierarchy had this not happened.

TheFifthKey · 05/07/2018 08:57

I find the lack of clarity here very confusing and I think deliberate obfuscation is going on. For example, on radio 4 they pointed out that differing views had been given on that one programme about whether it had to be ingested to be effective. For me, the question is really how much of poison must one encounter to fall ill, and in what form. Because, say the container of the poison has been discovered and made them ill - how had it been not discovered for so long? Why had other people not found it and become ill? Can you get slightly ill so it would be put down to something else?

So many things don’t make sense.

IrmaFayLear · 05/07/2018 09:09

Poor Salisbury. They were just beginning to recover from the effects of the last incident, and now their trade will again be decimated.

But this whole thing seems so... odd. Was it a coincidence that the two latest victims were intravenous drug users?

(Probably going to get flamed but why does a heroin addict get a nice new-build social housing flat?)

woman11017 · 05/07/2018 09:37

Thanks for sending us over to this thread OhYouBadBadKitten
Confused

woman11017 · 05/07/2018 09:41

I am very confused, yes, TheFifthKey the world at one on R4 yesterday almost seemed to be making fun of the whole incident, and then everything changed. The chronology is odd.

RunMummyRun68 · 05/07/2018 09:41

irma I wondered this too.... woman had been evicted previously from another property

Where's her young daughter?

NeverTwerkNaked · 05/07/2018 09:45

Do we know they were heroin addicts Irma ? I thought that was just the initial conclusion of cause of their illness?

lettuceWrap · 05/07/2018 09:52

Moving over from the other thread as badkitten suggested Smile

TokyoSushi · 05/07/2018 09:55

It seems now like they might have picked something up with the poison on, that's a long shelf life! Goodness knows what else it could therefore be on...

OP posts:
woman11017 · 05/07/2018 09:55

noticing that the Vote Leave campaign being thought to have acted illegally seems to be nowhere in headlines I notice that too OYBK
Leave UK cheated. Vote Leave" won by a margin of 3.8%, but they spent 10% more than the legal limit.
