This is a thread following the legal and ethical questions raised by the recent court case involving Charlie Gard.

Please could we refrain from insulting or otherwise "bashing" his parents. It isn't in the spirit of Mumsnet and will get the threads removed.

Please could we also remember that at the heart of this case is a terminally ill baby and his heartbroken parents. There are those participating in and watching this thread for whom these issues are painful. Please let's try and be mindful of them when we post. This isn't a place for name calling or trivialising the very real pain they feel. Many parents of severely disabled children are on here.

Lastly, here are some hopefully useful reference points of facts surrounding the case.

FallenUnicorn, someone is posting it on the public page of the man who is doing the webcasts. She is furious that they are not doing anything.

This is harassment, why is no one speaking out in defence of the medics there?

Ellie56 · 22/07/2017 17:50

The Dr looking after Charlie has been reported to the NSPCC.

Dear God just when you think they have reached the lowest level of stupidity...

I suppose the NSPCC are now involved in the massive conspiracy too?

RMC123 · 22/07/2017 17:50

Been busy all day! Just catching up. Feel I need to apologise for posting the poem as it seems to have upset many people. That was never my intention. Honestly I know how hard raising an child with a disability/ additional needs is. As well as being involved professionally I also have a disabled child myself. I suppose the point I wanted to make, that people have to be able to be honest about their hopes and regrets, got overshadowed by the poem. Flowers to all

I'm not expert but I do like Deborah Tannen'so ideas about how women (in Western cultures at least) use language - to share problems and suffering and to demonstrate connection and equality, which can tip into excluding those who aren't considered to be sharing enough, or who are sharing too much, or trying to alter a group culture except with permission from the 'leader', or who appear to have or want a higher status than the group. This fits a lot of social media patterns. God knows almost any thread on MN (including these ones) rapidly develops a culture of its own. The reward is to be included in the group and to survive together. The threat is exclusion and social 'death' which presumably in earlier societies would have meant actual death for women who cannot sursine alone while bearing children. The rewards and punishments are just not as potent for men, hence less intense involvement by men in these social media worlds/threads. That's her theory anyway.

The Dr looking after Charlie has been reported to the NSPCC

I wish people would think twice before they do something like that.

The NSPCC does not have unlimited resources. Not money, time, nor man/woman power.

And the people who do need their attention have a far bigger need than somebody wanting to make a point, or have a photo to wave about on a SMOG.

The NSPCC stepped in when my family were falling apart. They offered a brief moment of relief cos it felt like there was finally a grown up in charge. And both my parents put the brakes on their battle each for a while.

I'm so grateful to them. In the grand scheme of all the things that can bent for kids we 3 were not the neediest children they must have been faced with. But they stretched a little further and made a massive difference.

If people waste the charity's time with things that are so obviously not what they are there for smaller people very much at the sharp end risk reduced resources available to them,

This one has made me properly cross. Other children matter too. Their issues may different. The stakes may be different. But they matter too. And it is just not right to pointlessly squander manpower resources intended for them.

I know one reply won't have had a high "cost" in of itself. But it is the principle of it. How do you not think of the greater good and rebalance your sense of proportion when an idea like "I know I'll report the doctor to the NSPCC" pops up in your head ?

ememem84 · 22/07/2017 17:59

We had talked about the adopting route. We said we'd give ttc two years and if nothing happened we'd find out why. And if it wasn't possible for any reason we'd look at other options. Adoption being my preferred one.

I doubt grandma will treat ds any differently to my cousins boy. She's never do anything publically to offend. But imagine she'll say something once he's here. Probably without thinking...

Saying that mil has already said ds will not be her real grandson as he won't be born in her country... ffs we don't even live there

redshoeblueshoe · 22/07/2017 18:08

I haven't caught up since lunchtime. But Sky news are saying Gosh have now contacted the Met, due to the threats issued towards the staff

Hitmonlee · 22/07/2017 18:09

I'll try and get a link but sky news report GOSH have contacted the police with regards to threats both outside and inside the hospital.

Hitmonlee · 22/07/2017 18:09

Ahhh beat me to it Smile

friendlysnakehere · 22/07/2017 18:10

FB needs to take that page down, this is driving all of this.

Lelloteddy · 22/07/2017 18:10

WHY are people taking screenshots from a tiny minority of irrational keyboard warriors, cross posting them and giving them airtime? You do realise that you've now probably encouraged at least a few other lunatics to 'report' to the NSPCC.
CA are thriving on whipping up hysteria. But as I, and many others have already pointed out numerous times constantly referencing and reposting the craziness just spreads it further. Even there own 'thunderclaps' are having a maximum of 1k shares. From 62,000 members.
Keep reporting threats of violence, harrassement etc to FB AND the Met. I've had two 'successful' reports acknowledged today. But frantically cross posting the shit that they're posting achieves nothing apart from adding to their noise. If people want to read what's on CA, they will.

stitchglitched · 22/07/2017 18:10

Thanks for linking that judgement FallenUnicorn, was very interesting to read.

friendlysnakehere · 22/07/2017 18:13

Lelloteddy, I am not 'frantically' doing anything. I am discussing with others on the thread, the treatment of the medics.

It is clearly relevant, given the latest development and please don't assume that I haven't been reporting via official channels.

I am not going to stop on your instructions.

friendlysnakehere · 22/07/2017 18:14

And it wasn't from CA...

I know the news link is new, but do we know that there have actually been more threats and it's not referring to the older ones?

Obviously I know it's likely there have been more, but does it actually say that anywhere? Iyswim?

FallenUnicorn · 22/07/2017 18:19

Very interesting post annandale, and it makes a lot of sense.

11122aa · 22/07/2017 18:20

And by staff it could mean those directly linked to Charlie's care or those at the top of the hospital management who are probably named online as running GOSH.
