Seventeen tragic deaths confirmed so far, six victims provisionally identified. Flowers
Number of those who perished feared to rise into triple figures as search proceeds Flowers
Search for remaining victims expected to take weeks, sadly it’s considered unlikely that it will be possible to identify all the victims Flowers
Names of those still missing start to emerge Flowers
Nearly 80 victims being treated across six hospitals, with 15 still in critical care Flowers
Hundreds of people displaced and dispossessed, concerned about when and where they will be rehoused Flowers

Public inquiry ordered.
Criminal investigation launched.
Serious questions being asked about fire safety regulations, management of social housing, austerity and inequality.
Fire Brigade search of building expected to take weeks due to complexity of building, extent of fire damage and the necessity of undertaking a painstaking fingertip search.

“There must be arrests after this monstrous crime” David Lammy MP

‘Families rehoused last night been left clueless about where to spend next nights. No word from #kccouncil. Chaos.” Emily Maitlis, BBC

“We have to act as if it was our friends, our family in that block” Nick Hurd MP, Policing and Fire Minister

“Someone needs to be held accountable. These deaths could have been prevented.” Local resident to Sadiq Khan

I think BRC are there. The argument I've heard is why did we know almost immediately how many people died on 11/9 but we have no idea for this? I guess that there are signing in procedures in an office which makes that easier but then all of that would have gone when they collapsed.

I don't know the references to 9/11 figures are factual.

I lived in NY during and after 9/11 it took months if not longer to get the final figures. I recall clearly the anguish of people desperately trying to locate family and friends.

That said, there seems to be systemic dysfunction at multiple levels with the lack of process's in place to help those people. Its frankly speaking shameful.

SylviaPoe · 17/06/2017 14:04

They're not actually missing. It's a euphemism. They're dead.

And knowing how many are dead and identifying them will require huge amounts of liaison with the community to gather the information required to identify the bodies, especially as many have no dental records.

brasty · 17/06/2017 14:04

I have been shocked at the lack of coordination on the ground to help people. Without individuals stepping up, people would have had nowhere to sleep, no food and no clothing. That is not acceptable.

eynesbury · 17/06/2017 14:05

brasty well we don't actually know that. The council may well have planned to.

IrenetheQuaint · 17/06/2017 14:05

"Eye witnesses didn't see a huge amount 30/40 ish??) escape."

I don't think we should necessarily believe this figure - the eyewitnesses may have missed people who left very early on when the fire first became apparent, or who left via other exits. From the accounts of survivors, quite a lot of people did manage to get out of their own accord (thank heavens).

mrsglowglow · 17/06/2017 14:06

What we haven't been told is how many uninjured got out of the building and who is taking care of them? We know that an accurate number is not possible but the LFB and authorities could say 'we estimate xxxx got out without needing medical treatment' this type of information is normally given so why not here. Tbh the longer they keep people in the dark the more distrust builds.

MonkeylovesRobot · 17/06/2017 14:09

I don't think they know who was in the building and who wasn't. Many residents were attending mosques, many were at work, many flats sublet etc. It's actually frightening.

BeyondStrongAndStable · 17/06/2017 14:10

I had been wondering that mrsglow. Where is that figure and why has nobody given it to the survivors and families?

RhythmAndStealth · 17/06/2017 14:11

I would have thought that the list of people they were trying to rehouse would be a starting point mrsglow. Except there probably isn't a list like that either.

eynesbury The church, mosque and community centres involved say they have publically asked the council to coordinate relief efforts, and had no help. So yes, the council still are being very negligent. They obviously do not care about these people at all

mrsglowglow · 17/06/2017 14:16

Yes and why aren't the reporters down there asking this question? Something is not right with all this.

brasty · 17/06/2017 14:18

This is when the council should be stepping up and making sure people are looked after. They are not.

YellowLawn · 17/06/2017 14:20

I wish they would say 'unaccounted for' instead of 'missing'

RhythmAndStealth · 17/06/2017 14:23

From the Guardian 13.53

Victims, residents, faith leaders and volunteers have arrived at Downing Street to meet prime minister Theresa May.

The group wore white wristbands in a show of solidarity.

Yeah, they aren't really missing, are they? We know where they are :(

RhythmAndStealth · 17/06/2017 14:24

I know Yellow. Missing makes it sound like they might be wandering about somewhere dazed.

Btw, following queries my council have issued a statement that our few high rise have the fireproof cladding, as well as detailed fire safety procedures. Same for the new shopping centre too.

HeyRoly · 17/06/2017 14:25

And knowing how many are dead and identifying them will require huge amounts of liaison with the community to gather the information required to identify the bodies, especially as many have no dental records

What I find disturbing is that there are going to be flats in which everyone died and, potentially, know one will have known them. Not everyone will have known their neighbours. Not everyone will have shared a common language.

HeyRoly · 17/06/2017 14:26
