Seventeen tragic deaths confirmed so far, six victims provisionally identified. Flowers
Number of those who perished feared to rise into triple figures as search proceeds Flowers
Search for remaining victims expected to take weeks, sadly it’s considered unlikely that it will be possible to identify all the victims Flowers
Names of those still missing start to emerge Flowers
Nearly 80 victims being treated across six hospitals, with 15 still in critical care Flowers
Hundreds of people displaced and dispossessed, concerned about when and where they will be rehoused Flowers

Public inquiry ordered.
Criminal investigation launched.
Serious questions being asked about fire safety regulations, management of social housing, austerity and inequality.
Fire Brigade search of building expected to take weeks due to complexity of building, extent of fire damage and the necessity of undertaking a painstaking fingertip search.

“There must be arrests after this monstrous crime” David Lammy MP

‘Families rehoused last night been left clueless about where to spend next nights. No word from #kccouncil. Chaos.” Emily Maitlis, BBC

“We have to act as if it was our friends, our family in that block” Nick Hurd MP, Policing and Fire Minister

“Someone needs to be held accountable. These deaths could have been prevented.” Local resident to Sadiq Khan

Terrible that families housed last night don't know where they will stay next nights. I didn't know that.

Those poor families. I hope they get rehoused immediately. In suitable accommodation in the area that they want.

What is the legal status of a public inquiry and how will it affect the criminal investigation that probably also needs to take place?

Leanback · 15/06/2017 23:36

I think the numbers are going to rise to triple figures. Sad

Pogologo · 15/06/2017 23:37

I feel quite angry about how the BBC have handled this with Question Time. If it had been a terrorist incident they would have cancelled the programme. Instead we have a lineup that was already booked fielding questions for an awkward segment at the start.

I can just remember Piper Alpha and the Kings Cross Fire. I can't remember anything as horrible as this for a long time.

Flowers for all the posters who have been directly or indirectly affected by this.

Flowers to Helena who is a constant voice across hundreds of threads, speaking out against the terrible HA's & for tenants.
(Although there are undoubtedly some good HA's, there are many, many bad ones who need to be held to account).

I'm still struggling to comprehend the horror that all those poor people went through, I'm sad & I'm angry at the same time.

SylviaPoe · 15/06/2017 23:42

'To make this about the rich community wanting a prettier building to look at is the divide and conquer straw man argument they want us to be having.

Don't fall for it.'

Who are they?

SylviaPoe · 15/06/2017 23:44

Yes, I am really grateful that people like Helena exist that tirelessly work on campaigns and issues that would get buried otherwise.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 15/06/2017 23:44

It made me think of the Herald of Free Enterprise (Zeebrugge) ferry disaster. Huge loss of life due to sloppy safety practices and poor design.

StatisticallyChallenged · 15/06/2017 23:46

I'm really quite glad that Edinburgh tenants voted against transferring their stock from council to HA. This must have been around 2006-ish, and they had a vote to try and persuade everyone that they should vote for it. We were told all sorts about the wonderful improvements that would be made - but only if the transfer was done, otherwise....

There are still HA properties here but they're all newer ones built as HA in the first place, and not any big tower blocks.

I remember Piper Alpha Pogo. Hearing the helicopters fly over my house to the hospital in Aberdeen. That was a horrendous time.

Those tragedies in the 1980s another testament to what happens when regulation is subject to political ridicule.

It is them and us. Council (now usually HA) housing has moved so far away from it's original purpose it is unbelievable. Council housing was built to provide good quality and well maintained homes for those unable to buy a house for whatever reason and as a protection against unscrupulous landlords. Home as fit for heroes, and much later the Parker Morris report. For many years it worked so well, but now we have social landlords who are as bad as Rachman. Successive governments have destroyed the ideals upon which social housing was founded. But we need it more now than ever before. I hope this awful tragedy brings a sea change in how we think and vote about such things, but no 5 year old or six month old baby should have to lose their lives to make us see that we have a collective responsibility to each other, all of us in society, to provide an acceptable standard of living for all.

HelenaDove · 16/06/2017 00:18

Faith and Sylvia Thankyou thats very kind Thanks Thanks

HelenaDove · 16/06/2017 00:20

LeMes that is beautifully put.

HelenaDove · 16/06/2017 00:25

I watched the MPs debate on this this afternoon One of them is my MP. Who voted against homes having to be fit for human habitation.

Either they genuinely dont see the connection or dont want to.

antimatter · 16/06/2017 00:26

I am very angry at cuts to services.
The number of counsellors trained to help firefighters process the traumatic scenes they witness on the job in the London Fire Brigade was cut from 14 to just 2 under Johnson, who also took 13 fire engines off the run.

2, yes only 2 trained counsellors left!!!!
