I hadn't actually thought that Nigel Farage could go lower in my estimation. But have to admit I was wrong...

Washington Post article. Have you heard what Trump thinks of the Washington Post? Owned by Amazon's Bezos.

Lweji · 29/08/2016 13:37

It's possible that Byrd wasn't whiter than white, and rewrote history a bit. :) (Do I know anyone else who's done it???)

But his history in Congress and support by the NAACP mean that there is no wrong doing by Hillary in having considered him a mentor at a time when his activities were highly regarded and certainly not racist at all.
Hardly a stick to beat her with.

Lweji · 29/08/2016 13:38

Do read the article, though. It's not biased. It's based on the most favourable poll for Trump. And it sticks to actual facts.

I understand why Trump doesn't like them. He's not a stickler for facts.

Lweji · 29/08/2016 13:39

Hardly a stick to beat her with.

And, btw, unlike a certain NY businessman who has been accused and taken to court for discrimination against black tenants and workers.

Caipora · 29/08/2016 13:40

But who are they voting for? Some for Clinton, some for Johnson and some are not voting.

claig · 29/08/2016 13:43

If you think Trump, who has Dr Ben Carson, black pastors, the Stump for Trump sisters, etc supporting him is more of a racist than Senator Byrd, a former Exalted Cyclops, who was the longest serving Senator and the only Senator who voted against both African American U.S. Supreme Court nominees (liberal Thurgood Marshall and conservative Clarence Thomas), then there is nothing I can say to convince you otherwise.

Lweji · 29/08/2016 13:49

It doesn't really matter whether he's more or less racist. I'm not comparing Trump and Byrd. I'm making a comparison between Trump and Hillary.

Trump is racist.

His black support is token and very small.

Byrd acted differently from his early words for decades. And that's when Hillary met him and worked with him.

claig · 29/08/2016 13:53

'Byrd acted differently from his early words for decades'

Hmmm

The more I read about Byrd, the more I wonder what was going on. They say he ran the Senate and there was talk he may have become President. He was clearly powerful, you have to wonder who granted that to him and why.

claig · 29/08/2016 14:12

Byrd was against the 1964 Civil Rights Act, he also opposed busing to integrate schools and claimed it was a waste of money on the buses and gasoline.

Hillary says he was her mentor and it seems he was the mentor of quite a few young Democrats starting their climb up the career politician ladder as he "ran the Senate" and was the longest serving member and was apparently a whizz at all "the rules". Very starnge that someone with his background and with many conservative views was in such a high position of mentorship etc, and if you look on the internet it is almost as if his time in the Ku Klux Klan has been covered up by someone because you can't seem to find many of the details of which years etc. There doesn't seem to be much investigation about it.

claig · 29/08/2016 14:17

"Byrd was a key figure in blocking the Clinton administration's attempt at health reform. The White House had hoped to pass health care by using the budget reconciliation process. Byrd, then chairman of the Appropriations Committee, invoked the "Byrd Rule," which he had established in the 1980s, limiting what could pass by reconciliation to budgetary matters. He didn't think health care reform fit the bill, so it died."

www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2010/06/an-amazing-fact-about-robert-byrd/58824/

Amazing power, you have to wonder if anyone pulled his strings.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/08/2016 14:31

I've just returned from a month in the US, and was interested that most of those I talked with didn't seem to want "anyone but Trump" ... they wanted "anyone but Hilary"

I don't imagine Democrats will vote for him, but I do wonder if enough of them will stay at home rather than vote for Clinton, thus allowing him to get in

JudyCoolibar · 29/08/2016 14:37

Trump and Dr Ben Carson are about to start an outreach campaign in black neighbourhoods which no other Republican has done.

He's had months, even years, to start demonstrating an interest in the black vote and waits till two months before the elections to do it? He could hardly be signalling more loudly that he despises the black vote if he thinks they'll fall for that.

JudyCoolibar · 29/08/2016 14:50

Trump retweets anyone who supports him and calls him great. He doesn't read the fine print about who sent it etc. He is not that tech savvy.

How much tech savviness do you need to read the name of the sender of a tweet? Being unable to do that is not being "a bit of a plank", it's rank stupidity and carelessness. Who wants a president of whom that could be said?

Trump says that Hillary gives a ten minute speech and then has to go and lie down and sleep for 3 days. I don't know the veracity of that

You do know the veracity of that, claig. At least do us the credit to tell the truth yourself. If there was any veracity in it, there would be long stretches of time when we never see Hillary Clinton. After all, if she had to sleep for three days after a ten minute speech she'd need several weeks after a typical day's electioneering. It doesn't happen. And don't say it's just lovable exaggeration, because you have clearly indicated that you are saying is at least likely to be true.

I wonder why Trump is so eager to show documents about his health but not about his financial affairs?

Lweji · 29/08/2016 15:06

I wonder why Trump is so eager to show documents about his health

Ah, ah.
He isn't.
The letter he has shown is a complete fabrication and just more of the Trump fog.

Lweji · 29/08/2016 15:16

This would be the equivalent letter by his "accountant".

Accountant X, member of Y accountant company (i.e. visits there on occasion)

Mr Trump's wealth is in excellent state. His cash flow is excellent, but he is on an overdraft of nnnn million.

His accounts are all on the brightest red.

No other president has been wealthier than him.

Signed:
not anymore and not for many years a fellow of the American College of Accountants

BTW: www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/trump-doctor-wrote-health-letter-just-5-minutes-limo-waited-n638526

""If elected, Mr. Trump, I can state unequivocally, will be the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency," Bornstein (the doctor) wrote.

Asked how he could justify the hyperbole, Bornstein said, "I like that sentence to be quite honest with you and all the rest of them are either sick or dead."

Puzzledandpissedoff

Quite valid concerns, which is why there was a call for attention earlier to those who are worried about Trump.
Apathy could allow him to win the election, without a doubt.

But his disapproval rate is quite high. Much higher than Hillary's, although it will depend on the group of people you contact.

Looking at the national polls, the error margins are quite high, although the ones with the smallest margins give Clinton the bigger margins.

Exactly, Lweji Sad

I'm aware of what the polls are saying, but then we all saw the UK polls before the last election and look what happened there, when the largely forgotten, silent majority spoke. TBH I can't imagine any decent American wanting either of them, and am reminded of a recent (possibly apocryphal) obituary:

"Mary X, unable to face a life of choosing between Clinton and Trump, departed it to join the Lord ..." Grin

Interesting article on Putin's disinformation strategy here, touching on both Trump and Brexit.

BoffinMum · 01/09/2016 08:01

On the health letter there wasn't a single sports injury. That said everything. Plus looking at the bloke he's overweight and has high BP, as any fule can see.

BoffinMum · 01/09/2016 08:06

It's sad the Russians have forgotten who their allies were in WW2 and how we helped them with the siege of Leningrad, during their darkest days.

I think you're about 70 years too late with that remark. Grin

The Russians were always uncomfortable allies. It's just that Hitler was stupid enough to attack on two fronts.

BoffinMum · 01/09/2016 09:04

It was aimed at Putin. I am sure he is a longtime MN lurker GrinGrinGrin

I couldn't find a suitable image, but this came up.
