claig, you've acknowledged that some of Trump's supporters might well interpret what he said in its natural meaning, i.e. that Clinton should be shot. If one of them goes out and acts on that, would you say that Trump should not bear any responsibility?

claig · 10/08/2016 16:56

'the fact is that most people don't like them.'

That's fine, but in America it is very close between Trump and Hillary, so we will have to ait and see what the outcome is. It is not up to us.

JudyCoolibar · 10/08/2016 16:58

They ignore it because they don't take it seriously, they know that Trump says anything and doesn't mean much of it.

But he says it because he wants to persuade the hard right to vote for him by playing on their prejudices. Otherwise why say it? What are the hard right going to think when he says "Only joking guys, thanks for the votes but I didn't mean it"?

And can you explain how people are supposed to know which bits he means and which bits he doesn't?

claig · 10/08/2016 16:58

'If one of them goes out and acts on that, would you say that Trump should not bear any responsibility?'

No because Trump did not tell anyone to do anything. He can't be responsible for nutters. However, he shouldn't have said it.

JudyCoolibar · 10/08/2016 16:59

This infantile treatment of politics as if Trump is a monster is pathetic when millions support him, including African-Americans and Latinos and Muslim Americans

Obviously not, given that his support in that sector is under 1%. No other presidential candidate has ever sunk that low.

JudyCoolibar · 10/08/2016 17:00

No because Trump did not tell anyone to do anything. He can't be responsible for nutters. However, he shouldn't have said it.

But, in that event, one or more people will be dead and Trump's follower will be facing a life or indeed a death sentence directly as a result of what Trump said. How can Trump possibly abdicate responsibility or that?

Roussette · 10/08/2016 17:01

Bloody hell, I've just looked up this Stump for Trump sisters thing. Claig is that seriously the best you can come up with???! It may be rude of me but I don't think they have overcrowded brain cells. They face a huge backlash from African Americans too. I thought it was something worth considering. No no no.

Your arguments are very feeble, I can't quite get over it TBH.

claig · 10/08/2016 17:01

'he wants to persuade the hard right to vote for him'

The hard right is tiny, so attempting to persuade them and turning everyone else off would be stupid and that is not what Trump is doing.

'And can you explain how people are supposed to know which bits he means and which bits he doesn't?'

I can't tell people how to think, they have to make up their own minds about what Trump means and doesn't.

dudsville · 10/08/2016 17:01

Does anyone remember Ross Perot? He was a Texas billionaire that ran for president in 1992. He was as ridiculous but didn't get as far as Trump. The thing I remember him saying was that he would ban all male facial hair. It's fabulous what Trump is doing to the republican party and therefore for the democrats. We just have to hope people turn up and actually vote. I've seen on FB that the referendum here has motivated some there to vote who would have assumed he couldn't possibly win. 3 more months. What a looooooooong wait.

claig · 10/08/2016 17:04

'Bloody hell, I've just looked up this Stump for Trump sisters thing. Claig is that seriously the best you can come up with???! It may be rude of me but I don't think they have overcrowded brain cells.'

It doesn't get much better than the Stump for Trump Sisters. Legends.

Yes, I remember ROss. He was fantastic but he pulled out. COnspiracies about whether his family may have been threatened. he got about 19% in the primaries, I think.

Trump is a bit like Perot, but much more serious, which is shown by the fact that he defeated all the Republican Establishment. Trump won't pull out, he is in it to the end.

MrsJayy · 10/08/2016 17:09

Didnt he say in 1998(paraphrasing) you can say anything to dumb people and they will vote for you? It is coming back to bite him on the arse surely the powers that be wont allow this man be president. It is a terrifying thought

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 10/08/2016 17:09

claig I seem to understand this more than you. Unfortunately Obama can't run for president again. Sad

TwoLeftSocks · 10/08/2016 17:10

Why on earth would you want to elect someone you can't take seriously? He's the only presidential candidate I've ever thought 'he could really do with a responsible adult to filter what he's saying' about.

claig · 10/08/2016 17:11

Conspiracy theories about Ross Perot were that he was in the race to help Bill Clinton. He took votes away from Bush and Clinton won.

Similar conspiracy theories exist that Trump (who was a Liberal) is really working for Hillary and will deliberately lose. I don't buy that, but some people still think that.

claig · 10/08/2016 17:11

'Why on earth would you want to elect someone you can't take seriously?'

Because of the policies he is serious about.

TwoLeftSocks · 10/08/2016 17:11

"I can't tell people how to think, they have to make up their own minds about what Trump means and doesn't."

So how's that going to work out with international relations then?

NotYoda · 10/08/2016 17:13

TwoLeft

Yes, that's what is striking about him. He has no judgement

The thing insulting the mother of the dead soldier is an excellent case in point. The USA is very strong in its support of army families. Even if he believed what he was saying (and I think he did), to say it shows a massive lack of political, as well as moral judgment

TwoLeftSocks · 10/08/2016 17:13

'Because of the policies he is serious about."

But how do you know he's serious about them?

NotYoda · 10/08/2016 17:13

claig

I'd say having no judgment is a pretty red flag for a President

claig · 10/08/2016 17:15

'So how's that going to work out with international relations then?'

Trump is a tough business negotiator. The Chinese (some of their key papers) are even saying they prefer Trump to Hillary because they can do a deal with Trump on business and they know where he stands. In fact, many of the top Chinese officials say they get on better with Republicans than Democrats because the Republicans make deals for business, just like Nixon did, who opened up relations with China.

claig · 10/08/2016 17:18

'But how do you know he's serious about them?'

Very good question. I don't know for sure. It may all be an elaborate trick and he may sell out to the Establishment on manmade climate change for example. But the fact that the entire world political class is against Trump makes it look like he is for real and intends to change the cronyism. No one really knows, but that is what it looks like.

TwoLeftSocks · 10/08/2016 17:22

I wasn't thinking about trade so much, more things like the ongoing tricky situation in the Middle East.

SwedishEdith · 10/08/2016 17:24

They ignore it because they don't take it seriously, they know that Trump says anything and doesn't mean much of it.

So, what's the point of him? Which bits does he mean?

I don't believe for one minute that these are gaffes. He knows exactly what he's saying and the effect it will have.
