Thread 6.

OP posts:
LumelaMme · 17/01/2016 19:37

Lumela, while I do not know a lot about Islam, I do know that it hasn't even been established how many men that attacked the women in Cologne identify as 'Muslim'
emily, if you are going to bang on about Islam, it might be a good idea to find out about it.

also that a tiny amount of people do not represent millions of others
Didn't you notice my comments earlier about how Islamists have fucked things up for ordinary Muslims? Do I really have to spell it out for you that THIS SMALL PROPORTION OF CRIMINALS HAS FUCKED IT UP FOR GENUINE REFUGEES?

I also believe the assumption that this is 'tarrahush gamea' is wrong.
O-kay.

BackToTheNorth · 17/01/2016 19:42

emily

You say:

'Backtothenorth

'I think a large proportion of the French are racist, yes.'

That's not a generalisation. Im not generalising about a group there am I? I make it clear that I'm not by stating 'a large proportion.' I can back that statement up by stating, 'I believe a large proportion of French people are racist, which can be seen in the growth of popularity of Le Front Nationaleand the rise in attacks on ethnic minorities.

'The French are racist', would be a very different statement and a generalisation.'

You do realize you've just conceded the entire argument, don't you? Now anyone can say in response to you that ' a proportion of x group participates in mass sexual attacks on women, which can be seen in the attacks in Germany, Sweden, and Finland on NYE'.

I'm calling TKO!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 17/01/2016 19:44

A little unfortunate, perhaps, to bring TellMama into this as a source ...

www.telegraph.co.uk/journalists/andrew-gilligan/10108098/Muslim-hate-monitor-to-lose-backing.html

Justanotherlurker · 17/01/2016 19:45

Migrants come from different religions, but if we look at Muslims for example, hate crimes against Muslims in London rose by 70 per cent between 2014 and 2015. Tell MAMA, a national project which monitors anti-Muslim incidents within the UK, said that 60 per cent of victims were Muslim women wearing the Hijab

Whilst that is true, you need to look into the agenda of the press and associations such as Tell Mama

Incidents such as this

(Other news outlets are available for this source)

Reveal themselves as this:

Before you start, I am in no way implying that all reports are false, just that agendas are at play.

Justanotherlurker · 17/01/2016 19:50

My next post was going post what puzzled did.

Bienchen · 17/01/2016 19:51

Emily I am quoting you: "I also believe the assumption that this is 'tarrahush gamea' is wrong."

Well, the German federal police DISagrees with you. I linked to their statement previously on Jan 10 but here it is again (hoping that the link still works)
Taharrush gamea phenomenon has arrived in Germany. Known to them from arab countries and meaning the sexual molestation by a group.

Oh ooh Back is right!

Emily I think you might have lost the argument and you have mentioned Hitler too which means you HAVE invoked Godwin's Law and forfeited the whole argument!

LongWayRound thanks for those links.

Indeed!

kesstrel · 17/01/2016 20:08

I am quite sure that there ARE hate crimes committed against Muslims.

However, as someone who grew up with Jewish friends whose families had suffered in the Holocaust, I am also very concerned about the increasing hate crimes against Jewish people in Europe. I find it extremely ironic that Angela Merkel may have been motivated by guilt about the Holocaust, when she decided to let in to Germany so many undocumented young men from the MENA area, an area where 75% of the population have been shown to hold hostile stereotypes about Jews. And this was after ISIS operatives targeted a Jewish supermarket in Paris and killed 4 people.

HelenaDove · 17/01/2016 20:10

They are not made a priority for social housing its true. It is financed from elsewhere.

polentapies · 17/01/2016 20:13

Getting a bit excited that the petition might be up tomorrow. I don't think there is any reason to delay it, the wording was quite careful
Perhaps we should think of a twitter # before then. Is it still Cologne2016?

I remember during the Scottish referendum, the two camps had flags associated with their twitter # so some sort of gif or something. I can't remember what they were though. anyone know?

VertigoNun · 17/01/2016 20:16

Yes to #Cologne2016 and the gif already created.

BackToTheNorth · 17/01/2016 20:16

Inkanta

Yep - from emily's own lips: all you have to do is add the magic words 'a proportion of', or even 'a large proportion of', as emily herself did, and the statement automatically ceases to be a nasty generalisation.

Game, set, and match ;)

polentapies · 17/01/2016 20:16

Has anyone tested it on twitter?

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 17/01/2016 20:17

What I did say was that many of those things showed hate, racism, prejudice and fear. I also gave examples of comments chuntering on about immigration

There are none so blind....none so deaf.....

You ignore everything that doesn't fit into your narrow view. You are determined to look for ill where there is none.

I have happily holidayed a few times in Muslim country and would do so again, I felt no fear at all, in fact I did say I found the population to be very warm and helpful as I was with elderly disabled man and young toddler daughter, moving round wasn't easy.

I have family living in various arab countries too.

emilybohemia · 17/01/2016 20:20

Kesstrell, they're refugees. They're not ISIS. Your comment shows the dishonesty of this thread and the petition. It is fear of Muslims, immigrants, refugees and ethnic minorities fuelling this, not preventing sexual violence against women.

That is why so many comments that confirm fear, suspicion, hostility and stereotypes such as help's claim that immigrants are prioritised for housing and that women wearing hijab are hostile to us went unchallenged. Anything goes, so long as it stirs the fear.

polentapies · 17/01/2016 20:25

Where do you live Emily? Not in the UK for sure. Why do you care what petitions we put forward to our democracy. What's in it for you? Why do you care if some of our voters are what you deem to be 'racist' ? Do you have a vote, a expat vote for the UK? Is there democracy where you live Emily?

Justanotherlurker · 17/01/2016 20:29

they're refugees

Reports suggest otherwise.

LumelaMme · 17/01/2016 20:30

kess, I almost posted about anti-Semitism too.
I think it was one of emily's own threads that I linked to an article about whether Europe's Jews were safe, and connecting the level of threat to the prevalence of Islamic extremism.

This one. It's depressing.

Justanotherlurker · 17/01/2016 20:30

Thought I would try your selective quoting Emily.

januarybrown1998 · 17/01/2016 20:31

My MIL is French.

She taught in Lebanon for a while and made many deep lasting friends.

She is currently liaising with charities to help Syrian refugees who are in Lebanon and has given more time, money and love to the project than most people could imagine.

How dare you call her a racist?

I am reporting your post.

emilybohemia · 17/01/2016 20:31

I have reported your comment polenta and your unusual and worrying interest in personal information which is irrelevant to my and postings on this thread.
