Thread 6.

OP posts:

I'd also say rights is the better word.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 15/01/2016 23:18

I'd say 'in the face of conflicting cultural attitudes' is better than 'irrespective of contrary cultural attitudes'.

MamaMary · 15/01/2016 23:21

To uphold our safety, they could tell us to stay indoors.

But we have the RIGHT to travel and move around freely in public, wearing what we choose.

VertigoNun · 15/01/2016 23:21

Rights is the word for the legal side, the MP's will understand rights as short cut legal word, they also like words like welfare.

This link for the third box will mean Labour MP's and supported will be more inclined to sign. She is all party parliament refugee chair too. Balanced article. www.debbonaire.co.uk/welcoming_refugees_and_protecting_women_from_sexual_assault

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 15/01/2016 23:24

Very good article Vertigo.

travellingpeople · 15/01/2016 23:26

Mama i know, but if you want max support "safety" is better,as most folks think of "womens rights" as being a "loss" to them: not having correct air conditioning or wearing good enough shirt ie becomes peurile

venusinscorpio · 15/01/2016 23:26

Excellent point MamaMary. And I suspect they might, like the Mayor of Cologne.

VertigoNun · 15/01/2016 23:27

It's your name, your choice. I don't think we will have trouble getting support with wrights over safety, people are chomping at the bit with anger and will sign.

venusinscorpio · 15/01/2016 23:28

I don't agree travelling. If rights don't come into it they will indeed suggest that we modify our behaviour.

VertigoNun · 15/01/2016 23:28

Rights

travellingpeople · 15/01/2016 23:29

And the cologne attacks were about safety. The girls and women were excercising their rights, which were demolished due to those men,and they werent able to defend thereselves. The police werent either"

VertigoNun · 15/01/2016 23:31

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rights

VertigoNun · 15/01/2016 23:33

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_and_safety_law

This is what safety and rights are to law makers. Parliament = law makers

travellingpeople · 15/01/2016 23:35

Those men only understand force. My bottom line is that if the state/police will not defend us then we have to do it ourselves. See my post on thread 2 or 3

VertigoNun · 15/01/2016 23:37

Safety is all about compensation.

venusinscorpio · 15/01/2016 23:37

It's your decision if you want to go with safety, just registering my personal view on the matter. IMO it's a much less passive aspiration to talk about rights. But that's the last I shall say on it.

MamaMary · 15/01/2016 23:42

Well, whoever is starting the petition - Anna isn't it - can choose the wording she wants.

But the assaults were not an attack on safety. They were fundamentally an attack on women's freedom and on women's rights.

We are demanding much more than 'safety'. We are demanding that our hard-won rights and equality are upheld and enforced with rigour.

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 15/01/2016 23:42

Can you fit in " right to public safety"?

Ignore if not helpfu!l.

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 15/01/2016 23:43

Yes you can be safe holed up in your house.

VertigoNun · 15/01/2016 23:44

My last thoughts on rights and safety.

If the MP's see safety they will think you have a no win no fee solicitor ready to sue the police if you as an individual are assaulted.

If they see rights they will know you are talking about their responsibilities towards half the population.

travellingpeople · 15/01/2016 23:47

Ok i might be wrong.I just think that no one can argue against womens safety, but they can against vague rights

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 15/01/2016 23:50

Travelling I know what you mean, but from what I gather from my kids schooling " rights" is the language used.

VertigoNun · 15/01/2016 23:51

It's like going to America they call the loo the bathroom. It's their language.

VertigoNun · 15/01/2016 23:52

You are not wrong. It is just about speaking their language.

travellingpeople · 15/01/2016 23:53

Ok just wanted the strongest rebuffal_ no one can argue against girls and women being safe, and that enccompasses them going about their day to day life unmolested
