Just in case people want to continue discussing this.

Our leaders believe in Free movement within the EU; but not for women after dark!
(Sarcasm alert!)

Wild Grin Blush
*law & order but ale will do on occasion. I like ale

Thank you Lise I don't seem to have the 1000 clicky link at the top, not sure why.

fidel and pink thank you. This is the logical conclusion of the cult-like and unthinking self censorship I was talking about on page 1 and from which I too suffered (until Rotherham). No more.

DH likes the idea of a curfew for men in Vienna after dark rather than women. Thinks it would concentrate minds. He also thinks the Guardian has "jumped the shark" on this one. And finally thinks it would never happen here because Englishmen wouldn't allow it! Poor dear, naive thing. I've no doubt that German men were not content to allow it either. Of course in America where everyone is armed to the teeth...

Igneococcus · 08/01/2016 20:30

wildewoman Grainne Mhaol is 11 year old DD's favourite historical figure, she uses the name as username for a forum she's a member.

venusinscorpio · 08/01/2016 20:31

I can see why you might feel the need, but bloody hell it's exhausting and it clutters the place up.

YY. Certain people are doing it in good faith but tbh it comes across as derailing when talking about this very specific situation. Very few people on this thread are terrible racists, and they are well aware that the situation for women is crap for many reasons. But this is a specific incident and should be examined on its own merits, as well as part of the larger issue of patriarchy and misogyny.

Constancegardner · 08/01/2016 20:31

See Angry Foreigner on you tube on how Swedish left has let down Swedish women.

GraceKellysLeftArm · 08/01/2016 20:32

It happened to a mumsnetter in London. She talked about it first few pages of first thread.

Inkanta · 08/01/2016 20:33

'Our leaders believe in Free movement within the EU; but not for women after dark!

Aye that's true Sonya!

bluebolt · 08/01/2016 20:33

At least Twitter seems to be very angry with the independent and their "just blame the gender".

GraceKellysLeftArm · 08/01/2016 20:34

And as far as "everyday sexism" goes - I'll take the daily mail bar of shame over being escorted everywhere by a man any day of the week.

Pinkchampchoccies · 08/01/2016 20:35

Dis anyone else see the breaking news item on the BBC homepage a couple of hours ago, which stated that there had been a bomb scare in either Manchester or Birmingham? Sorry don't remember where exactly but there was a photo too. There is absolutely no reference to it anywhere... this threw me a little.

Yes, I think a curfew on men would make a definite point and open up debate. I think a lot of people just don't understand that if women are forced to stay inside that is essentially the same thing as a curfew. Thus they think its reasonable for women to be expected to do so. Golda Meir had it right!

Pinkchampchoccies · 08/01/2016 20:36

and apologies not quite on topic either...

Hiw are you accessing Mumsnet? I'm using the desktop site on my ipad, I wonder if the the show 1,000 posts isn't available on the mobile site? I'll click it on mine and post the link here, it might make the full thread show for you if you click it?

MamaMary · 08/01/2016 20:37

What is scary is that, without the internet, we probably wouldn't know any of this had happened.

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 08/01/2016 20:45

True MamaMary. I knew for years that Hillsborough was not as the official police reports said, because I heard reports of eyewitnesses within my community. Eyewitness stories are now circulated on social media and although misinformation is spread too on the whole I think it is positive.

Justanotherlurker · 08/01/2016 20:45

The bomb threat was Liverpool and is in no way related to anything.

Well, we might, because back before the internet newspapers had better editorial standards. I can't believe the amount of shite that passes for news on the broadsheet's websites, and I hardly ever buy the actual papers any more because they are often so vacuous.

WildeWoman · 08/01/2016 20:47

Igneococcus - your daughter is a very clever young lady!

Gráinne was indeed wilde. (btw, I use 'wilde' as it was the old English spelling of 'wild'. Artefacts from English reconnaisance missions to Ireland where they drew pictures of 'Wilde Man' and 'Wilde Woman' hee hee.

I'm sure your daughter has read all this, but here is a good link to Gráinne (my sister's name).

Just another wild Irish woman....

I did RTFT before commenting. It took me three days to catch up.

By 'contribute before criticizing' do you mean 'just agree'?

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 08/01/2016 20:53

MamaMary And we wouldn't be make to make up the restHmm

As I have said more than once it has been widely reported from early on on radio 4.

I have to say I find some of the views on this thread really objectionable and unfortunately those objectionable views are exactly what will stop this getting the reaction it deserves.

It takes only a few really appalling remarks to tarr an entirely reasonable desire to protect the rights of women as right wing 'them and us' racism.

Someone says upthread how does ISIS benefit from this? The same way they benefit from any other act of terrorism, by frightening people, by polarising people, by making liberal societies do illiberal and remove freedom.

This situation should be viewed as an coordinated act of women hating terrorists. The inidividuals involved should be punished as terrorists. Policing should have been more on the ball. It should be made absolutely clear that mauling women in crowds is not part of revellery or wild behaviour or a feature of some areas of some cities.

Zero tolerance for violence against women.

Paedophiles should be arrested regardless of who they are or where they come from.
Rapists and sex offenders should be arrested and prosecuted regardless of who they are and where they come from.

It is that simple.

fidel1ne · 08/01/2016 20:54

That post (on page 1) really resonated with me words. It's so frustrating to watch what's happened to the left.

captainproton · 08/01/2016 20:56

I just wonder how we are going to stop this and effect change. I am trying to think are there any politicians/parties who are standing up to this victim blaming? Standing up to the mass influx of young men who have little respect for women. Is it truly only the far right?

If there was an election tomorrow who would I vote for? I haven't got a clue.

I think writing letters to MPs or signing petitions is a start but we need something much more likely to be picked up by the MSM and not be ignored. A bit like the farmers did with the milk campaign.

I don't know who would front it, and I don't have the intellectual ability to come up with something sassy and unignorable, but I do feel it's the next step.

I really feel it needs to be the sisters of all faiths and cultures standing together to make sure that mostly patriarchal governments do not sacrifice womenfolk for convenience of business and foreign policy.

I personally would like to shame those who victim blame women. Perhaps something like a White feather, when women would give men white feathers for cowardice. Although I absolutely disagree with what that was about.

Could we borrow and adapt? Maybe we should send newspapers, politicians, journalists, councils, universities, schools, religious leaders etc who victim blame or shoot down discussion on this matter envelopes of pink feathers? And a little card explaining why?

I don't know if i make sense. Most of us are preaching to the converted here and I would like to do something real for the sake of my Children and women in general.
