New thread again.

Thread 1 - started when 3 Israeli boys were found murdered.

Thread 2 - in which we mainly discussed Operation Protective Edge.

Thread 3 - in which we continued to discuss Operation Protective Edge, the wider conflict and international involvement.

Thread 4 - in which Operation Protective Edge was examined further and we looked at the different views from inside Israel and the international community.

Another reminder of the Mumsnet Talk Guidelines.

I meant to say earlier, small things but if people are thinking along these lines then its always going to be a step in the right direction, anyway, I was in Superdrug earlier and as I was paying there was mascara on the counter and I remembered I needed to get a new one. I was with my daughter and she started checking on our list whether we could buy it, the cashier seemed interested so I told him and he called his manager over and asked could he photocopy our list as he wanted to boycott as well. The manager wanted a photocopy also and it steamrolled (it was very quiet in the store so relaxed) whereby other members of staff also wanted to boycott.

They were all horrified over whats happening and they were all young (er than me) I dunno, just gives you hope really.

Houses and infrastructure gone.... and I'm so scared that once this is no longer on the front pages, the world will forget, and they'll carry on suffering, "dying anyway".

Yy Back that is the thing, but I really believe that so many people have been made aware now of what is happening in Palestine that pressure will be kept going, as it was in SA, a quiet but determined sector of society wanted change.

Its up to us to keep the pressure up this time.

Isitme Chuckle brothers?? Really?? Just horrible. Very proud of Senator Norris though. About time.

TheHoneyBadger · 05/08/2014 19:26

heartening to hear of that superdrug incident.

people DO care. it's just horrendous that their so called representatives don't give a damn for the main part.

was the deleted personal attack at me btw?

QnBoudi · 05/08/2014 19:35

Warsi had a good slot on C4. Very glad it was an exclusive. Stick that in yer barrel, Beeb!

Thanks to all for uplifting posts...

Inspirational action shutting the factory. Food for a week? I'll send food parcels. Just let me check what's on the boycott list first.

Great work spreading the word in Super drug.

At last some legal action being taken and hopefully the claims will manage to get to and through the ICC.

Please keep sharing these snippets of hope.

It has been really grim to watch Israel's behaviour over the past few weeks. The disregard for proportionality - for international opinion; the arrogance and the lies and the death and destruction they have rained down with absolute impunity. I cannot understand their mindset. As Einstein pointed insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

I find it utterly depressing. I will boycott what I can because, well, it's a start. But the Palestinians need a Mandela, a Ghandi and that is like wanting to find a unicorn ...

Ah, where do we send food parcels to?

OneStepCloser · 05/08/2014 19:48

Ive read about a mayor in Ireland trying to get his town to boycott Israeli goods, is that the same town dingalong? Fantastic, thats what we want, come on more Mayors, step up!

saadia · 05/08/2014 19:50

So glad to hear some positive news, well done to the people effecting change, it is certainly heartening. Perhaps this will be the last such atrocity.

TheHoneyBadger, yes the deleted post was aimed at you.

OneStepCloser · 05/08/2014 19:55

Seems Warsi has started somethin in whitehall. Apparently Clegg's now called for a suspension in arms export licences. Has the momentum reached critical point? Must ensure it doesn't fizzle out now. Keep up the pressure one and all.

somewheresafe · 05/08/2014 19:56

Why are the apologists so crazy? It's all Hamas human shields tunnels hamas hamas.

I'm all for debate but honestly feel that it is pointless if they refuse to look beyond hamas.

C4 interviewed some soldiers and they were saying the exact same lines I've heard every single apologist use: hamas human shields hamas hamas.

It beggars belief that they do not understand how transparent to the world the Hamas lie is. I'm no fan of hamas but I said in the last thread that this massacre has presented hamas in a good light. I've gone from seeing them as brutal terrorists to brave freedom fighters trying to end occupation. Israel is looking quite the brutal buffoon. Regev is hilarious to watch and today when Michael oren was asked about eavesdropping on kerry he pretended he couldn't hear. Buffoons. www.mediaite.com/tv/fmr-israeli-amb-suddenly-cant-hear-msnbc-when-asked-about-kerry-spying/

C4 reported that clegg is also pressuring the government to stop arming israel. And warsi was brave to declare that Osborne was a very very good friend of the israeli government.

FrontierPsychiatrist · 05/08/2014 19:58

What's the average of Israeli recruits? Do people think part of the wanton killing of children and civilians is due to having very young and immature soldiers with the power to kill? Some of them look like children themselves.

I read an absolutely horrific report in the guardian from a few years ago that detailed how an Israeli soldier shot a 10 year old girl who was running away terrified, in the legs 'to secure the area' then repeatedly shot her at close range 'to confirm the kill'. He claimed that he would have even killed a three year old.

My daughter is three.

The levels of dehumanisation are shocking. This has really motivated me to apply to work with MSF as soon as I possibly can.

In a capitalist society, I think boycott must be a powerful tool. Even if it is slow. It is the very, very, very, very least that we can do to show our discontent.

Ah, somewheresafe thats why Osborne was so scathing of her resignation then.

Ack, dont waste time on the apologists, this last hour this thread has given some great information instead of wasting time, yet again, on trying to reason with apologists. If we waste time on debating with them then it'll be like groundhog day, I dont want to go over old ground with them again, I want to know what we are doing, what we can do and ideas of keeping up the pressure.

OneStepCloser · 05/08/2014 20:15

Thats such fantastic news Ding We have a terrific Green counsillor, I wonder if its worth contacting him, lots of people respect him here.

TheHoneyBadger · 05/08/2014 20:23

shame i missed it but thanks to whoever reported.

i WISH i had useful skills to offer MSF. unfortunately i did useless things like anthropology, teaching and counselling before going self employed. i think a wider world view would have seen me go for medicine.

Rabbi Lerner, well respected in many circles, has written a very moving piece and I'm sure I'm not the only hew who feels exactly the same. Please read if you have the time. He discusses he went from.staunch israeli supporter to dismayed at israeli atrocities and the impact of their actions on the reputation of what is essentially a peaceful religion.

For years I was a supporter of israel. Our people had suffered enough. We needed security. But israel.is the actual antithesis of security. It represents brutality, power, racism and superiority. It's sickening to see what crimes israel has committed in our name.

Lerner is right when he states that these days for many jews it's easier to say you renounce Judaism than saying you renounce israel.

Backinthering · 05/08/2014 20:24

somewheresafe - am just catching up on the Ch4 news report. That poor Palestinian woman that has lost everything looked shocked and baffled when asked if Hamas was/had been there, didn't she?
Yet it's all Hamas/Human shield ad nauseum from the apologists. Oh and the latest "terror tunnels", which funnily enough didn't seem to cause any terror until they became a convenient excuse.

Was also somewhat chilling to hear the blond, blue-eyed soldier say that he mostly "just follows orders".

somewheresafe · 05/08/2014 20:32

It's distressing to see the palestinians return to their homes with their clothes still covered in dust from the day they fled weeks ago. Palestinians are proud people and muslim palestinians perform regular ablutions daily before prayer. To see them without water food and homes is heartbreaking.

Rabbi Lerner is right to describe israel as brutal for bombing the water and sanitation supplies knowing this will increase diseases in Gaza.

The soldier C4 spoke to seemed to have little understanding of the situation or devastation caused. I have very mixed feelings towards the idf. On the one hand they depict barbarism and inhumanity and on the other hand a see mainly young men who have been indoctrinated into cruelty.

I'm very keen to spread awareness of the fb ban on 1st Sept.
