New thread again.

Thread 1 - started when 3 Israeli boys were found murdered.

Thread 2 - in which we mainly discussed Operation Protective Edge.

Thread 3 - in which we continued to discuss Operation Protective Edge, the wider conflict and international involvement.

Thread 4 - in which Operation Protective Edge was examined further and we looked at the different views from inside Israel and the international community.

Another reminder of the Mumsnet Talk Guidelines.

Oh God I give up! Who knew you could get so much slack from pointing out that you have only come across people that have had positive views on Jewish people as you grew up. So are confused as to why they think they are hated when you have never been given a negative impression of them.

Didn't say that all people hold this positive view of Jews just what I'd experienced. I'M TALKING ABOUT MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE.

People will pick fault in anything to make it into an argument.

Say positive things about Jewish people/faith when your not Jewish you get attacked on here. Say negative thing about the Israeli government on here when your not Jewish you get attacked.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 13/08/2014 16:09

It's how I feel about gays, goldvelvet. They're all so fabulous at design. IN MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

JohnFarleysRuskin · 13/08/2014 16:11

If they complain about homophobia, I just pat them on their little coiffured heads and say, 'I don't know what you are talking about'.

goldvelvet · 13/08/2014 16:13

Tall people are great at basketball in my personal experience! :)

goldvelvet · 13/08/2014 16:14

I can't reach to pat them on the head as i'm only 5'4

goldvelvet · 13/08/2014 16:17

And if you had read the whole thread John you would have read that it was something that I overheard in a conversation when I was a kid. It was the only time i'd heard Jewish people being talked about. And what I got from it was something positive not negative.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 13/08/2014 16:23

Are you getting at the Jews now because they are short?

(Disclaimer - this is a joke)

Its not just you Goldvelvet, you are maybe the fourth poster I've read, not only on this thread, who seems to want to suggest that there is no anti-semitism in the UK.
Jewish people would probably tell it differently.
I don't really get WHY people are saying it.
It seems so incredible to me.
Have they really, really never heard anything negative? Not about Jewish famous people, Jewish businesses, nasty stereotypes, stupid conspiracy theories, etc, etc. nothing at all?

I must have just been incredibly unlucky.

Hakluyt · 13/08/2014 16:29

Anti semitism exists.

Objecting to Israeli foreign policy is not a manifestation of it.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 13/08/2014 16:32

Why the queue of people to say that they've never been aware of anti-semitism in the UK?

Can they be for real?

alAswad · 13/08/2014 16:38

Hakluyt, people keep saying that, but the pro-Israeli posters (mostly) haven't said it is.

alAswad · 13/08/2014 16:44

JohnFarleys to be fair I think it's easy to assume that the views of the people you know personally are an accurate reflection of the country. I mean I grew up thinking homophobia and racism weren't real problems in the UK anymore Hmm Only when I moved away from my very middle-class liberal corner of London did I realise just how wrong I was. As I said before I don't think being unaware of prejudice is a problem in itself, as long as you're prepared to listen when the people affected do talk about it, and to believe them.

Hakluyt · 13/08/2014 16:52

The discussion of anti semitism is a separate one to the discussion of Israeli foreign policy. However
much the apologists try to conflate them.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 13/08/2014 16:54

It is separate which is why it's shocking when the racists confuse them, I agree hak.

QnBoudi · 13/08/2014 16:58

Well said, Hakluyt.

goldvelvet · 13/08/2014 17:00

I have not once said that I didn't believe you and I haven't grown up in one place all my life. I've lived in 3 countries, and countless cities, and towns. I think the difference may be that i'm younger than you so my peers are possibly more tolerant? (not saying people need to be tolerated before i get miss quoted, just the best word I could find!)

But saying that I have encountered racisms, homosexuality, and other unpleasant behaviour. Though I'm glad to say it's not the norm.

Maybe even though I've moved about I haven't encountered that many Jewish people or lived in areas that house a large Jewish community. So I haven't had the chance to witness it.

All I was saying it isn't a general feeling that i've ever felt floating around whilst growing up, which i'm glad of. So this is why I was confused.
Not saying it doesn't happen but something that hasn't been present in my life (until recently) hence why I was so perplexed as my association with Jews (religion and nation) had only ever been positive.

And I know just because you don't experience something doesn't mean it doesn't happen hence why I brought my thoughts up in this thread, I expressed my confusion.

alAswad · 13/08/2014 17:08

goldvelvet I don't know if that was to me or JohnFarleys but if it was to me then I wasn't talking about you in particular, just musing generally. (I do doubt that you're significantly younger than me though, unless you're a teenager! Smile)

Hakluyt I think everyone here's agreed on that, whichever 'side' they're on.

I never noticed/experienced any anti Irish feeling and I've lived in many places. They do great dancing don't they.

QnBoudi · 13/08/2014 17:54

Would those interested in various manifestations of racism wherever, whenever and whyever please start up another thread to vent their sarcasm on.

'm missing the informative posts about the iIsraeli Palestinian conflict.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 13/08/2014 18:03

I believe someone tried to start a thread about rising anti semitism before but were treated as members of the Knesset by many posters so it dwindled out.

Oh well, I look forward to the informative posts here.

halfdrunkcoffee · 13/08/2014 18:12

QnBoudi, there have been a few threads on anti-Semitism in AIBU recently and they've all turned into discussions of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

HomeHelpMeGawd · 13/08/2014 18:15

GoldVelvet, you chose to engage in this discussion and made several extremely provocative points: quite a lot more than simply expressing your confusion as to why Jewish people talked about antisemitism when you hadn't seen much. Getting exasperated now that people have responded does you no favours.

QnBoudi, I don't want to start another thread. I want to respond to posts such as GoldVelvet's post on this thread right here.

If you like informative links, here's one that I posted earlier:
