Part 4: Israeli-Palestinian conflict

New thread again.

Thread 1 - started when 3 Israeli boys were found murdered.

Thread 2 - in which we mainly discussed Operation Protective Edge.

Thread 3 - in which we continued to discuss Operation Protective Edge, the wider conflict and international involvement.

Welcome to part 4, in which I hope it's not too much to ask that we stick to the MN Talk Guidelines Wink

As many people have asked about Syria, I'm pleased to say that a new discussion on that subject has been started (by another poster here.

re: yes i think they'd probably stand by and watch us being mass murdered too if it fitted with their agenda without losing much sleep.

people who can offer unconditional support to mass murder of civilians should not be in a position of power over the lives of civilians anywhere.

zinher · 01/08/2014 09:11

The calorie restriction explains how young the children looked. The 15 he old in Jonathan millers report looked hardly 12. Am feeling absolute despair at what is being allowed to happen. Can't even begin to imagine what the gazans are feeling.

TheHoneyBadger · 01/08/2014 09:15

you don't have to imagine - seek out the reports and footage that allows them to speak for themselves and avoid the coverage that dehumanises them or portrays them as exotic, hysterical 'others'.

TheHoneyBadger · 01/08/2014 09:18

so yes they've had their food restricted, their freedoms totally restricted, meds restricted to the point of no bloody gauze in hospitals let alone morphine for those dying in agony or the ability to treat the rocketing levels of breast cancer they've experienced, no materials to rebuild, no access to clean waters, no ability to move away from toxic waste of the heavy weaponry (often experimental, sometimes illegal) that has been rained on them, etc etc.

but they are the terrorists apparently Confused nice world we live in eh?

TheHoneyBadger · 01/08/2014 09:19

honestly it makes you consider what lengths of alleged terrorism you'd go to to rid the world of psychopathic regimes and their enablers and restore some sense of ethical sanity to this planet.

TheHoneyBadger · 01/08/2014 09:21

sorry - i know i'm ranting. i'm just so disgusted. if i could get the world leaders in a room right now and gag their wormy lying mouths i could direct my ranting at where it is deserved. sorry for doing it here.

DieselSpillages · 01/08/2014 09:33

72 hour ceasefire already broken by Israel It is the daily mail so hopefully bullshit :(

TheHoneyBadger · 01/08/2014 09:38

what difference does it make really? a day and a half break from your slaughter or just carry on? what are these ceasefires anyway other than opportunities to reload and change over your troops?

sorry.

ReigningQueen · 01/08/2014 09:40

No doubt they'll be explaining how it was Hamas who broke it.
I'm so appalled by it all. I'd like to take a step back and not think about it for a whole but then, if everyone did that and no voices were heard, that would be even more terrible.

MTWTFSS · 01/08/2014 09:41

From the BBC News:

"Israel and Hamas begin a 72-hour truce, but hours later several Palestinians die by Israeli fire in apparent response to a rocket attack."

Therefore, Hamas broke the ceasefire!!!

MTWTFSS · 01/08/2014 09:43

Isn't there an army in the world (such as NATO) that could go into Gaza and Israel and stop both sides?

timbucktoo · 01/08/2014 09:47

Today we live in a neo-fuedalist system in which the super rich pull all the strings. When I am talking about the ultra-wealthy, I am not just talking about people that have a few million dollars. As you will see later in this article, the ultra-wealthy have enough money sitting in offshore banks to buy all of the goods and services produced in the United States during the course of an entire year and still be able to pay off the entire U.S. national debt. That is an amount of money so large that it is almost incomprehensible. Under this ne0-feudalist system, all the rest of us are debt slaves, including our own governments. Just look around - everyone is drowning in debt, and all of that debt is making the ultra-wealthy even wealthier. But the ultra-wealthy don't just sit on all of that wealth. They use some of it to dominate the affairs of the nations. The ultra-wealthy own virtually every major bank and every major corporation on the planet. They use a vast network of secret societies, think tanks and charitable organizations to advance their agendas and to keep their members in line. They control how we view the world through their ownership of the media and their dominance over our education system. They fund the campaigns of most of our politicians and they exert a tremendous amount of influence over international organizations such as the United Nations, the IMF, the World Bank and the WTO. When you step back and take a look at the big picture, there is little doubt about who runs the world. It is just that most people don't want to admit the truth.

(Reuters) - Israeli tanks opened fire in the southern Gaza Strip after a 72-hour truce began on Friday, a Reuters photographer and the Palestinian Interior Ministry said, and Hamas media reported that four people were killed.

The Israeli military had no immediate comment.

Israel would have commented first if Hamas had broken the ceasefire

KareninsGirl · 01/08/2014 09:52

Yes, Hamas have (yet again) broken the ceasefire. This is now the 5th ceasefire they have broken.

When are you people going to understand: while Hamas is in charge of gaza there will never be peace.

KareninsGirl · 01/08/2014 09:54

Timbuktoo, see the BBC website. It states that Israel attacked due to having to respond to rockets from Hamas. This means Hamas broke the ceasefire - again.

timbucktoo · 01/08/2014 09:58

However, hours after the truce began, Palestinians said four people had been killed by Israeli fire, apparently in response to a rocket attack.

Why did Israel not report this first before killing people ?

KareninsGirl · 01/08/2014 10:04

I would ask you not to focus on semantics, but rather the truth.

Hamas will never accept peace and their continual breaking of ceasefires should prove that.

TheHoneyBadger · 01/08/2014 10:08

whatever. what difference does it make to the people of palestine? what do you think you can do in 72hrs that makes a difference when you know they're going to start killing you again at the end and are using the time to stock up on new weaponry from their international enablers?

there's no medicine or supplies that would allow you to treat your sick and hospitals keep getting bombed anyway. there's no 'safe place' you can use the time to get to because even UN schools are being bombed.

what is it for for them? to bury their dead? is there any point? you might as well leave the grave open for the next load of your family who'll be getting in there in a few days time.

we will never know who broke the ceasefire because everyone just lies anyway - he said, she said, well i believe him because i'm on his side, you believe her because.... ya da ya da.

what difference does it make to the people of palestine? what would you do as a mother with a possible (but unlikely) 72hrs of not being bombed in an open air prison? there's NOTHING you can do to make you or your children safe, there's next to no water or food and it's damned dangerous to try and get it anyway given nowhere is safe from being attacked and these 'ceasefires' rarely actually equate to an actual safe period. what would you do?

TheHoneyBadger · 01/08/2014 10:12

what peace? what peace do you think there is in palestine karenin? what's your concept of peace? being starved to death? being trapped and treated like an animal with no hope for you or your children to ever get out and lead a human life? no hope of getting medication for diabetes or treatment for your mother's breast cancer or enough food to ensure that your stunted child can grow properly?

peace? ffs. wake up.

ReigningQueen · 01/08/2014 10:14

It looks even more and more impossible to have peace in the area. It's awful that agreed ceasefires are broken, whoever broke it. It's disgraceful when people thought it was ok to make their way to their destroyed homes and have some reprieve.

KareninsGirl · 01/08/2014 10:16

No I'm not saying it's a perfect solution to peace but surely a ceasefire gives time to get people round the table?

If Israel had broken the ceasefire you would have all been shouting it from the roof tops.

Why is it excusable because Hamas broke it - again??

ReigningQueen · 01/08/2014 10:16

Though I don't even know if it was an agreed ceasefire.

TheHoneyBadger · 01/08/2014 10:17

please do answer and tell me what 'peace' looks like to you? please tell me what you would consider a state of 'peace' for you and your family?

i couldn't be at peace without a safe roof over my head, enough food in my child's belly, access to healthcare for beloved, sick relatives, access to unpolluted water for us to drink and freedom for us to travel when we needed to and no threat of future bombing, invasion, degradation etc. i couldn't be at peace when denied the ability to rebuild the home over my families head that has been damaged by shell fire and i just want some building materials to repair it so that my children are safe and sheltered, i couldn't be at peace till i knew there was some chance of my children ever having employment and basic security.

maybe by peace you just mean a brief respite in heavy military fire being used on you? to me the word has always meant a bit more than that but i'm happy to hear your definition if you want to share it?

ReigningQueen · 01/08/2014 10:20

I'm not excusing it if it was Hamas. They aren't doing themselves any favours. Though I agree with Honeybadger in that the Palestinians are a desperate people (I read a quote from a Palestinian that their lives were a living death) I do think that if you come to an agreement, for the sake of your people and for people to have some faith in your honour, you should adhere to any agreements made.

somewheresafe · 01/08/2014 10:21

I think everyone knows it's israel who broke the ceasefire. I'm sure Regev will be on soon telling us all Hamas fired first but israel are 'still investigating'

Any moral ethical country would of course void any rocket using the iron dome, then go to every news agency in town to tell them Hamas broke the ceasefire. Assuming of course Hamas did. Not israel. No it kills 5 more first. Incidentally there are numerous came rows fixated on the iron dome to monitor it's working so if Hamas had fired first israel would have that video evidence all over the world by now.

It's clear that Israel have no intention of ending the siege. Re the calorie counting it is one the reasons men in their late twenties still have the bodies of teenagers and looking at the coverage it is very rare to find any person who looks fat or obese.

The link attached shows moronic Hannity from.fox mews criticising russell brand. Some really brilliant points made by Geraldo Rivera. If everyone in Israel felt the same as Geraldo peace could be achieved. He loves israel and argues that if Israel can make peace with germany then it has to try and do so with palestine. End the siege.
