Part 4: Israeli-Palestinian conflict

AndHarry · 31/07/2014 11:46

New thread again.

Thread 1 - started when 3 Israeli boys were found murdered.

Thread 2 - in which we mainly discussed Operation Protective Edge.

Thread 3 - in which we continued to discuss Operation Protective Edge, the wider conflict and international involvement.

Welcome to part 4, in which I hope it's not too much to ask that we stick to the MN Talk Guidelines Wink

As many people have asked about Syria, I'm pleased to say that a new discussion on that subject has been started (by another poster here.

@Honeybadger, I have no idea what you are talking about and I was not implying anything. I just thought 3m was hardly anything at all for the displaced, the sick, the hungry and thirsty, the homeless, the wounded.
Thats why I asked how much would it work out per person of the population. Seeing as you seem to have been so indignated by my innocuous post I shall leave you to get indignated by actual wrongs and not something in your imagination. rolly eyes

June55 · 02/08/2014 18:18

Ah, ok then Honeybadger, no worries then mate. Done it myself often a time on forums. Catch you later anyway.

Springheeled · 02/08/2014 19:02

Ugh to Lynn Featherstone arguing semantics on channel 4 news.

I've had enough- I just don't know what more anyone can do? Written, donated, protested- what can we do???

somewheresafe · 02/08/2014 19:02

There are rumours that Netanyahu is dismayed by the world hatred and pressure at home having lost significant idf soldiers since the ground invasion, so to save face he will be announcing that the idf have destroyed tunnels and will now withdraw.

I hope this is true, whatever his reasons for doing so.

He's destroyed almost everything In Gaza from homes to electricity and sanitation plans, schools, lives. Bastard.

ReigningQueen · 02/08/2014 19:13

I so hope that's true somewheresafe. What else is there to do there other than wipe out any other man, woman and child still alive.

Chipstick10 · 02/08/2014 19:14

How come he is only dismayed now? I don't get it

Springheeled · 02/08/2014 19:17

Just sat down to phone some customer service lines- eg m and s but they're all shut!

If Israel pulls out, lives can be spared and that is a blessing. But what the hell was it for? Those lives lost to utter futility.

June55 · 02/08/2014 19:29

I see he has said dismayed at world "hatred" without qualifying it but yes the world hated your deplorable "actions" and all the nonsensical mouth spouting about anti semiticism/support for terrorists etc has been shown to be what it is.

Thank heaven for small mercies that certain people have been given the green light to return to their homes in Gaza, I wonder how many of these are still standing though.....Israel should be made to pay for their rebuilding at the least.

Thank God he has realised he couldnt peddle this shit for much longer.

Chipstick10 · 02/08/2014 19:34

I agree with this june however I'm just wondering why after all this time he has suddenly become dismayed with world opinion. He didn't give a monkeys toss about it yesterday or the day before. What has changed i wonder !!!

June55 · 02/08/2014 19:35

He is sorry for every single civilian casualty..oh right, that makes it all ok then, poor, 1/10

June55 · 02/08/2014 19:46

So, only Israel missing from Cairo talks, the rest of them are all there, hmm, how does that square with Israel complaining Hamas didnt agree to the original Egyptian ceasefire deal, (as I recall it Hamas werent included in those talks) being a bit childish and hypocrytical here perchance?

End of the day, BN has got the mesage from the world methinks and jolly good too, and is trying to save face on all sides as well as trying to fulfill "his mission"...good luck with the balancing act. A few less bombs on all and sundry may not go amiss.

thecatfromjapan · 02/08/2014 20:00

I think he (BN)'s become dismayed now because he's achieved what he wanted: the infrastructure is shattered; the population is also shattered; but he's stopped just short of there being any kind of real sanctions imposed. The siege will continue - with the world's eyes largely averted - the population will continue to slowly starve, the infrastructure will not get back to pre-massacre levels, and Israel can continue to portray itself as a humanitarian nation.

thecatfromjapan · 02/08/2014 20:03

Having said that, I hope they do withdraw.

My powerlessness makes me feel complicit. And disgusted beyond words.

OneStepCloser · 02/08/2014 20:06

I've been out all afternoon so have missed any news, are Israel withdrawing?

OneStepCloser · 02/08/2014 20:18

Huh, according to the BBC (bias broadcasting corporation) Israel have no intention of withdrawing, am I missing something?

somewheresafe · 02/08/2014 20:21

No they're not. NuttyYahoo has said his forces will continue. The 'dismayed' came from me based on rumours and info reported by al jazeera. It was thought that nutty would withdraw as they have killed almost everyone in Gaza bar the international news reporters. I agree that dismayed was not the best word to use. If course any normal human would be appalled and destroyed by the loss of life. Not nutty.

I suspect the emotional pressure from the missing soldiers mother may have influenced his decision. Surely though as the idf literally pulverised and bombed the whole area the soldier was captured in he will be dead by now? No one is claiming responsibility for the capture which furthermore suggests the soldier is dead.

Meanwhile, in Rafa hundreds are suspected dead but as no one can get in or out there is effectively a news blackout.

Sorry, that was me responding to a far earlier post - in a conversational mode - before looking at the actual news myself. I can't quite bring myself to find out what has happened today. the continuing scale seems unbearable.

somewheresafe · 02/08/2014 20:40

C4 also reported that some troops were withdrawing. But there seems to have been a change of heart.

I doubt he spends all day watching every international news channel, reads twitter and facebook, his advisors and colleauges have obviously not kept him up to speed.
And dont forget its in the last week or so many many more high profile people have protested as well as the mushrooming surge in public outcry.

Being the PM and what he has done befofe he should be able to work it all out for himself anyway, piss poor.

June55 · 02/08/2014 20:43

I wouldnt be surprised if BN WAS called up by the ICC or whatever its called as so many have said what Israel have done amounts to nothing less than war crimes.

Let that be a lesson for any future PMs

June55 · 02/08/2014 20:44

ALL POWER to the moderates. Gnite.

somewheresafe · 02/08/2014 20:59

Max Blumenthal, NY commentator, has stated that journalists coming out of Gaza state it looks completely apocalyptic.

Whatever happens, and let's face it there will be a withdrawal soon as there's no one left to kill, no building left to obliterate, we must ensure that Israel do not get away with this. This has to be the beginning of the end of the apartheid.

I feel exactly the same as Jewish author Naomi Wolf who stated today: how does this make jews safer? How does this decrease anti semitism? Like Germans We will have to be explaining where we were in july/Aug 2014 and expiation this for 2 generations.

QnBoudi · 02/08/2014 21:04

I nearly choked at the report that the Israelis are UNILATERALLY withdrawing. What's the implication there? Moral high ground cos those pesky ayrabs aren't withdrawing themselves?

QnBoudi · 02/08/2014 21:06

Its not so much a withdrawal of a changing of the guard since they've just called up thousands more.
