She has more mad ideas than any woman I have ever known.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 27/03/2006 21:14

mojomummy - what do you recommend as an alternative?

Enid · 27/03/2006 21:16

a nutritionist?

then how come you don't know about small children needing fats?

spidermama · 27/03/2006 21:19

My dh just read some of this thread and he said ...

Actually, I'm not going to repeat what he said.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 27/03/2006 21:22

Actually I'm well impressed that it took nearly 12 hours to get around to Paula Radcliffe and Ellen McArthur. Must be a bit of a record.

Mojomummy - that was a serious question BTW - what do you recommend?

mojomummy · 27/03/2006 21:23

Sorry - reseaching my family tree..

  1. you don't need milk to supply calcium, & in fact the more milk you drink, the more calcium you need - vegans don't drink cows milk, yet their requirements (providing they eat a balanced diet) are significantly less than a milk drinker.

  2. Suggestion instead of milk ? Anything non-animal.

Does it matter that HM is something to do with PETA etc etc ? The fact is, we take for granted everything we are told - not willing to get into a slanging match about pros & cons, but don't just dismiss articles like this. Research alternatives & make an informed decision.

mojomummy · 27/03/2006 21:24

I rather like the idea of the hemp milk...

I'd like to know too. An equally rich form of calcium which is as accessible and cheap as dairy?

spidermama · 27/03/2006 21:32

If people were able to think outside the box for a minute, it's not so outlandish an idea to give up, or even cut down on, dairy.

I mean, veggies and vegans don't always attempt to replicate the diets of their omniverous friends with Fish-ish Fingers or Chicken-style curry do they? Why should we need to 'replace' milk with something similar. We're all just in the habit of having way too much dairy and perhaps it might be a good idea to cut it out or cut down. I have and will continue to.

spidermama · 27/03/2006 21:33

Nuts, pulses, leafy stuff ... all calcium rich. Hang on I'll dig out the link.

bubble99 · 27/03/2006 21:36

Calcium is essential though, SM, it is not optional or replaceable and it is fair to ask what other sources are as easy to buy/use by my elderly mother who lives in the middle of nowhere and whose local shop is a Spar.

spidermama · 27/03/2006 21:36

\link{http://www.interlog.com/%20john13/recipes/calcium.htm\Lots of perfectly good sources of calcium.}

Orlando · 27/03/2006 21:37

((leafy stuff not too great in a cup of tea, either Grin))

bubble99 · 27/03/2006 21:37

I suspect she'd find a pint of milk easier to deal with.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 27/03/2006 21:38

For kids though 'nuts, pulses, leafy stuff' doesn't really cut it does it?

Ds2 loves his porridge for instance so you do need to replace with something similar.

Eurch! Pussy old milk it tea? Or coffee for that matter. I don't understand it.

(Actually I have cappucinos out so I'm a bit of a hypocrite. I had to mention this in case sunnyDelight is lurking.)

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 27/03/2006 21:40

My milkman nearly had a coronary when I wanted to switch to organic - gawd knows what would happen if I asked him for hemp Grin

spidermama · 27/03/2006 21:41

My kids totally eat nuts, pulses, leafy green stuff and always have. Why wouldn't they?

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 27/03/2006 21:42

Mine don't - not for breakfast anyway Wink

CHICagoMUM · 27/03/2006 21:42

(quick hijack - bubble am still planning to head down your way in the next few months, and are you on msn by any chance?)

bubble99 · 27/03/2006 21:43

'Always have' is the key phrase, I suspect.

Mine will too, but lots won't or can't as the local Spar doesn't stock it.

spidermama · 27/03/2006 21:44

What? No kale, hemp and buckwheat pancakes for breakfast round yours then sugar?

bubble99 · 27/03/2006 21:45

'fraid not, CM. Sad It doesn't work for me for some reason. CAT me and I'll email, slow but sure. Grin
