Baby born in Camp Bastion!

A soldier has given birth in Camp Bastion, after not realizing she was pregnant. The baby was five weeks prem. Link.

I hope the surprise has helped morale at the camp. But what I would like to know (because I am endlessly fascinated by stories of births in weird places), is what citizenship does the baby get? Will it have Afghan citizenship? Can it get British citizenship from being born in a British base? (The mother is Fijian)

Congratulations and good health to mother and baby.

Women are amazing. Not only can they serve alongside men - but they can do it while heavily pregnant.

The bbc seem to have decided she knew and denied it Hmm

She must have also been really fit to not know about it! Wow! Ie what stomach muscles!

5madthings · 20/09/2012 09:40

I heard this and what a lovely story! One hell.of a suprise! Glad mum and baby are both well.

I think it will hopefully be a great morale boost for the troops there, their own little miracle!

DottyWottyDooDah · 20/09/2012 09:41

How do they know it's 5 weeks prem?

5madthings · 20/09/2012 09:43

That quote from the nct spokesperson is shit. Just because she doesnt believe it can happen doesnt mean she is lying!! Grr crap reprting.

5madthings · 20/09/2012 09:44

They can estimate by the size/development of the baby.

Netguru · 20/09/2012 09:44

You can tell how prem a baby is by its development.

Uk nationality is decided on parents nationality. Other countries can differ (USA for one)

msrisotto · 20/09/2012 09:45

Amazing woman!

Netguru · 20/09/2012 09:45

Had a scan a couple of weeks ago. Scan technician is convinced women can not know. She has had to tell quite a few - one in labour!

lljkk · 20/09/2012 09:45

Citizenship: depends if she's married to a British father, too.
Must be a way of handling overseas born children of serving military members, I have noticed a separate section for it on some of the citizenship forms we've filled in.
Amazing, and hope he turns out well.

Chubfuddler · 20/09/2012 09:46

How on earth could she not feel the baby moving though? That's what I don't get. The only person I ever knew who discovered she was pregnant quite late (about 26 weeks) had a v irregular cycle do that part is understandable, but went to the doctor because of the "pain" in her abdomen. It was the baby moving.

scaevola · 20/09/2012 09:46

AIBU thread for those who might be interested.

DottyWottyDooDah · 20/09/2012 09:48

There's a regular MN poster who has an amazing birth story, she didn't know she was pg until she was in labour. She put pics on her profile of the last few weeks of her pregnancy. It is easy to see why she didn't know!

5madthings · 20/09/2012 09:49

chub sometimes the position if the placenta and positiin of the baby means you cant feel them etc.

Chubfuddler · 20/09/2012 09:51

Dotty I think there were later issues about that poster's credibility. Let's not go there again.

Chubfuddler · 20/09/2012 09:51

True 5mad.

DottyWottyDooDah · 20/09/2012 09:52

Sorry if it's not the done thing, link to her story here

DottyWottyDooDah · 20/09/2012 09:53

Whoops, cross posted chub, didn't know that Blush

5madthings · 20/09/2012 09:53

Nit credibility but behaviour on the boards i thought? Anyway it can and does happen and i am not impressed with the bbc reporting and insinuation that the mother is lying. crappy nct statement.

Marne · 20/09/2012 09:54

Theres an old lady who dh works with (she's in her 70's now), she went all through pregnancy with her ds and didn't know until she went into labour, even the doctors thought she had gaul stones. She was so shocked when she was told she was in labour. He was a only child Smile so it deffently can happen.

Marne · 20/09/2012 09:55

oh, and she wasn't 70 when she had him Grin, was many years ago.
