Baby born in Camp Bastion!

A soldier has given birth in Camp Bastion, after not realizing she was pregnant. The baby was five weeks prem. Link.

I hope the surprise has helped morale at the camp. But what I would like to know (because I am endlessly fascinated by stories of births in weird places), is what citizenship does the baby get? Will it have Afghan citizenship? Can it get British citizenship from being born in a British base? (The mother is Fijian)

My niece's mother (ex SIL) had a baby on the living room floor, her 4th, and had not known she was pregnant. at all. And she had not looked pregnant.

farfallarocks · 20/09/2012 12:23

Wow, if I had not known I was pregnant I would have thught I had a terminal disease in the first trimester, never felt tiredness and nausea like it.
And what about all the movements! Did she have no tummy? I am at her stage now and boy do I look and feel pregnant!
The lack of periods is the easiest thing to explain away in my view
Anyway, best of luck to her and a lovely story, hope she is not too shocked

LtEveDallas · 20/09/2012 12:24

Jenai, she deployed in March - so only just pregnant at the time.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 20/09/2012 12:28

At least she didn't have to wear maternity uniform Grin

LtEveDallas · 20/09/2012 12:30

Grin God yes, it is foul

Northernlurkerisbackatwork · 20/09/2012 12:30

And she's worked right up to giving birth Grin Can you imagine the AIBU?

'AIBU to think anybody who isn't charging around a warzone till their waters break is slacking'? Grin

I do hope she's ok with this though. Huge shock - and your birth is on the front pages!

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 20/09/2012 12:36

She'll be on here telling people to get a grip. I do hope so.

pixiestix · 20/09/2012 12:38

Hang on, Stranded wasn't for real? When did all that come out? Shock

There were threads, and threads about threads. Most of them have been deleted. I don't know if she flounced, was banned or name changed but it was all odd.

BoxHillBessy · 20/09/2012 12:43

Well POAS wouldnt work for me as I don't show up positive with those things only by blood test. When I had my DD i was raceriding and had tummy muscles of steel, it was only that I was exceedinly ill that I found out I was pg- I wouldnt have known otherwise.

redrighthand · 20/09/2012 13:01

Medicals aren't routine prior to deployment, only if you have a problem that needs to be assessed as to whether it will affect your ability to carry out your job. In fact IIRC (it was several months ago) all that is compulsory is up to date jabs, a hearing test and malaria tablets (that everyone takes religiously...). In my time in the military I have never been asked if I am pregnant or been asked to POAS.

I think the only people who POAS are the new soldier recruits when they tip up for their basic training. I stand by to be corrected.

Eric would be apt, not very Fijian though Grin

I dont think we know strandefs story isnt true? Just that she was banned for her behaviour on the boards? "goading' i thought? Anyway its not relevant to this thread and we may get in trouble for discusding it?!

I hadnt thought of jabs etc. Do hope the.little one is ok and doesnt suffer any problems from his unusual start to life!

maxmillie · 20/09/2012 13:11

stranded bear?!?!! really?!?!?! i remember her posting pics of herself a few days before birth in her cheerleading outfit.

Was she really making it up? Se is the world's best ever troll if so.

lovechoc · 20/09/2012 13:19

I am sorry but I'm just not believing this. Was listening to the BBC Radio 2 news this morning when this story came on. I just laughed at how ridiculous it was. How on earth can you not know you're pregnant?!? I was out of breath near the end of my pregnancy, baby kicked loads, etc. Everything is much more of an effort.

Preggers test will most likely be routine now, so this situation doesn't happen again. What an expense having to fly the mother and baby home.

Mintyy · 20/09/2012 13:23

I am really puzzled as to why this is a top news story. It is just not that uncommon.

Stranded was banned for sock puppeting, not lying.

marge2 · 20/09/2012 13:29

I bet loads of women can't tell from their shape changing. I knew 2 women, who had babies, who I had seen regularly up until the births who I never knew were pregnant. They knew they were, of course. One was a very BIG girl to start with, so her shape didn't really change, and one was pretty skinny, and had the tiniest bump you can imagine. My normal postweekend gut was bigger than her 9 month pregnant tummy

lovechoc · 20/09/2012 13:30

Yes it's a lovely news story (meant to add that in). Nice to hear something positive for a change! Glad mum and baby are doing well :)

LtEveDallas · 20/09/2012 13:31

Lovechoc. Not knowingly pregnant is explained up thread. No reason to doubt her. Also, no expense to fly her back, C130s fly in and out daily. Care team will go out an an already booked flight and come back on the same.

Minty - Not that uncommon? This is the first time ever! I've known soldiers to be flown back after discovering their pregnancy whilst in theatre, but no soldier has ever given birth in Camp Bastion before.

scaevola · 20/09/2012 13:31

LtEve - the thread I saw was in Current Affairs, not the NAAFI, which meant that although some of the predictable comments were there, they weren't as ..um.. trenchantly expressed as they might be elsewhere.

Names: Sebatian, Stan, Terry or Sandy?

StateofConfusion · 20/09/2012 13:35

HQ deletes anything to do with stranded, way back when we were both new mners we were friends on fb, similar age and dds similar age and just got on, but it was clear from fb her 'I didn't know I was pregnant' was bull.

scaevola · 20/09/2012 13:35

POAS won't become routine. Service personnel are well capable discovering and reporting pregnancies without imposing a testing regime (and it's no just Afghan tours that are out when lighter duties are required). And it doesn't stop people discovering a pregnancy in theatre anyhow if they were in the very early days at time of deployment.
