Baby born in Camp Bastion!

FairPhyllis · 20/09/2012 01:45

A soldier has given birth in Camp Bastion, after not realizing she was pregnant. The baby was five weeks prem. Link.

I hope the surprise has helped morale at the camp. But what I would like to know (because I am endlessly fascinated by stories of births in weird places), is what citizenship does the baby get? Will it have Afghan citizenship? Can it get British citizenship from being born in a British base? (The mother is Fijian)

Minty - pretty sure SB wasn't banned for sock puppeting. She was allowed on MN for quite a while after. I thought it was her goading thread that got her banned?

LemonBreeland · 20/09/2012 13:48

It's a fascinating story. And it must be such a shock to suddenly be holding a baby you didn't know you were having. I have also watch I didn't know I was pregnant.

Interesting hearing stories from others on here that although they knew they were pg the didn't feel any kicking. Pregnancies really can differ so much from woman to woman.

Trazzletoes · 20/09/2012 13:48

I don't know of many countries where you automatically acquire the nationality just by virtue of being born there (the USA being an obvious exception). You certainly don't get to be British due to being born here or on Other British soil, it's down to the nationality of the parents.

IShallCallYouSquishy · 20/09/2012 13:49

Oh wow! Congratulations to the new mum! Surely if she had known she would of said something as no mother (usual mental illness disclosure applies) would knowingly endanger her unborn baby by serving in the military while pregnant?!

ChicHappens · 20/09/2012 13:50

I've been friends in the past with Stranded on FB and I thought the opposite to StateofConfusion - I though the comments under her FB photos backed up her claim? Maybe I'm mistaken?

But anyway she's not here to defend herself against allegations of making it up...and as I understand it she was banned for sockpuppeting, not lying (as Mintyy says correctly above).

Hopefully this thread can stay on track about the birth in Afghanistan and not yet another thread about an old poster.

Climbingpenguin · 20/09/2012 13:56

what always struck me on stranded threads was there were a few other MNers with the same story so she wasn't unique (ignoring whether it was true or not) wrt not knowing until labour.

I hope this isn't used as a stick to bash female armed forces personnel and I hope the mum is alright

lol at harry being a fast worker Grin

Some folk will do anything to get in the news.

lovechoc · 20/09/2012 14:08

"Service personnel are well capable discovering and reporting pregnancies"

Oh, are they now?

Shoshe · 20/09/2012 14:09

The rest of her your got back last night to home there was some giggles about from the Fijians next door.
And I can quite believe it. Army uniforms are not of the best fit and I didn't know the lass across from us was pg although I saw her everyday until I saw a 'it's a girl' sign on her door Grin

Shoshe · 20/09/2012 14:09

Your? Tour

I borrowed a PE skirt from a friend at school for netball practice (she had PE that day and took full part in the lesson with the skirt on) 2 days before she gave birth....she hadn't put on any weight at all and it was a complete shock to everyone

BoffinMum · 20/09/2012 14:41

I had a baby at 19 whilst young and fit and while I did know I was pg, it had no physical impact on me at all and I didn't look very pg either. I can see how you wouldn't know.

BoffinMum · 20/09/2012 14:44

Oh yes, and I was back in tight waisted dresses about two days later. Well stretchy I was then. I didn't put on any weight to speak of and I didn't realise I was in labour until second stage was very close to kicking in (ambulance job).

How different things are when you have a baby at 41, as I was to find out. Grin

LtEveDallas · 20/09/2012 14:53

Boffin, I remember fine well my best friend having her eldest DS at the age of 18. She hardly showed, was a size 8 before she was pregnant and came out of hospital 3 days later in her size 8 jeans.

For Citizenship, any child born to a Fijian parent is deemed by the Fijian constitution to have the right to Fijian citizenship, but I think he will have to register to be granted it.

Quite a lot of countries grant citizenship to anyone born in their territory - pretty much all of the Americas, not just the US. Also Pakistan and Cambodia.

(Disclaimer - all this from Wikipedia).

madwomanintheattic · 20/09/2012 15:48
Grin Well, I've had to send back a fair few pg service personnel from theatre, but I've never had to send one back having delivered a baby...!

Agree with the grousing likely to result. Am a war dodger myself having discovered I was pg a week before I went on tour. Accidentally. Dh was already out there and we're expecting a grand reunion in theatre. Hey ho.

Hope they are both well. Small part of me wishes I was at work waiting for the aeromed team. Grin

LtEveDallas · 20/09/2012 15:54

madwoman, exactly the same happened to me . Felt terrible that I had to tell my boss before my family - because I'd walked in on him and the CO arguing about who was 'having me' on Tour! I had to say "Umm, well actually, neither of you" Blush

overmydeadbody · 20/09/2012 16:59

What is sock puppeting? Is it a euphamism or was she just making puppets out of socks?

Baskets45 · 20/09/2012 17:12

yes, i want to know what sock puppeting is too.

Lt Eve - why were they fighting over you - cos you wiz a woman? I don't believe the British army is a sexist organisation .... Hmm

Babies born in UK could get UK nationality till the 1980s, regardless of parents' nationality. Twas Thatcher's legislation wot changed it IIRC. Plus ca change.

5madthings · 20/09/2012 17:15

Sock putteting is when you post on a thread using more than one username often to support what you said in the other name if that makes sense¿ ie you do an op in aibu, everyone tells you uabu and then the op changes names and posts to support the op but obviously it looks like someone else if that makes sense?

Baskets45 · 20/09/2012 17:18

And how can it be detected? not that i'm planning to try it, but surely name changing can't be detected except by management team, otherwise it would be pointless?

5madthings · 20/09/2012 17:21

Yes mnhq can find out if you change your name using your profile i guess? Or you can do it by registering with more than one email addy? But not sure if they can find out then?!

Viviennemary · 20/09/2012 17:24

I tend to think most of these women that don't know they are pregnant are in denial. Sorry to go against the main view. But there you are. I am just being honest.
