A report in the Independent about the cover up. RIP to the people who lost their lives on 15th April 1989.
And condolences to the families who are still suffering.

ITV also responded to my e mail but they just thanked me for the feedback. They didnt say whether they would broadcast it or not.
But they must have been on the cusp of changing their minds because ive just seen a tweet from Peter Hooton lead singer of The Farm. ITV 1 are going to rebroadcast Jimmy McGoverns docu drama of Hillsborough on September 30th at 10.20pm.

i remember i was pg with my ds1 when i sat down to watch this match with my family in our home in Liverpool, we couldnt believe what we were seeing, i remember the death toll hitting 40 and we couldnt believe it, we sat there in silence numb with shock, unbelievable that people could be dying at a football match, i knew people who were there and i knew people who died that day. My ds1 is now grown up with a family of his own, thats a whole generation gone by, a whole generation its taken for the truth to come out, when you think about it, its inconceivable and hard to take in, the extent of the coverup of this awful tragedy is despicable and it makes my blood run cold

Exactly Vinegar It shouldnt have taken this long. 1989 was the year i left school (i was sixteen that June) im pushing 40 now (next year) it shouldnt have taken this bloody long for the truth to come out. The lies that were spun about the fans were horric ALL LIES and an absolutely disgusting despicable thing to do to people who were grieving and to people who were trying to help the dying.
its the sheer SCALE of the lies and the cover up. Its appalling and shocking...there are not strong enough words in the English language to describe it.

It's been a while, but I had to revisit the thread to share this little nugget with you Kelvin MacKenzie Latest. Angry

He can fuck right off. He has known for years that they were lies that he was telling and simply thought he could get away with it.
When the findings of the Hillsborough Independent panel proved BEYOND ALL DOUBT that they were lies this odious gobshite McKenzie is trying to rewrite history by trying to make himself look like an innocent party.
Well McKenzie you lying cunt its an EPIC FAIL. It didnt work.

He's a grade A cunt. He wrote the headline, he chose to publish.

What Mr McKenzie perhaps fails to realise is that all those who were involved in the cover-up need to apologise. Unreservedly and for the rest of their lives. Not to each other, but to the country and to the families of those who died. He could have retracted the story as soon as it was established the source was not viable. He didn't. Whether S Yorks police owe him an apology is a private matter for them to resolve; the public simply does not care.

"Mr MacKenzie was responsible for the particular headline he chose to run with."

as stated by the Police. Exactly. He chose to go with that.

I remember my friends who were there that day, being appalled and devastated by that headline, as all they saw were people fighting to survive and fighting to help others. Not actually fighting, or picking pockets or whatever.

The only element of any truth was that SOME fans had been drinking. I have been to Anfield myself a couple of times back in the 90's and had a couple pints of lager before the game. it does not make me drunk and it does not make me a hooligan.

The police treated everybody as if they were drunk and dangerous. Watching the Hillsborough docudrama by Jimmy McGovern shows how the police tried to pin the blame on drunk unruly fans, when all along, it was them who lost control, them who did not act fast enough and them who acted appallingly afterwards,

Kenny Dalglish said:

When Marina and I drove into Anfield on the morning of Wednesday, April 19, we found the staff and the families enraged by a piece in The Sun.

Its infamous front-page headline, ?THE TRUTH?, caused hurt and outrage by accusing fans of pick-pocketing the dying and urinating on the bodies.

Unbelievable. Liverpool punters went ballistic, some of them burning the paper on news-stands, others coming to Anfield to talk about their anger. The following day, the paper?s editor Kelvin MacKenzie rang the club.

?Kenny, we have a bit of a problem,? he said.

?Aye.?

?How can we resolve it??

?See that headline you put in, ?THE TRUTH?? Just have another one, as big: ?WE LIED. SORRY.??

?Kenny, we can?t do that.?

?I can?t help you then.? I put down the phone.

What's fascinating is that McKenzie's keenness to smear ordinary fans just goes to show his absolute contempt for ordinary people and his total lack of judgement. If you are the editor of a major paper and shocking news comes in on the wire, you stop and use your judgement regarding whether / how to corroborate the info. McKenzie did not stop, did not think, did not corroborate, did not ask questions. It was manna from heaven to him to confirm all his worst prejudices about (a) the working class (b) northerners (c) Scousers (d) footy fans. And his unfounded belief in the police as paragons of virtue, propped up by years of conservative support lent credence to it all.

He had no judgement. He is officially a twunt.

I can think of so many things that Kelvin MacKenzie richly deserves.
An apology doesn't even make the list.

A one-way ticket to Liverpool Parkway Station with a sign round his neck, maybe...

So pleased ITV listened and are showing this on a mainstream channel. Some people (like my parents) only watch the mainstream ones.

Damn missed it even though I was looking out for it. Maybe they didn't show it on Scottish TV? There was a programme about Sextuplets who were born in May 2010 straight after the news on ITV 1. I wouldn't mind but the programme only showed the kids up till May 2011 so not even an up to date programme. I wonder if they don't think the Scottish are interested because it happened in England?? Or maybe they will show it another time. May have to fire off an email...

I'm glad they showed Hillsborough it was all the more harrowing now it's been proved that everything that was said about the fans was lies. My dh was friends with the glover boys, Ian in particular and then after hillsborough joe. He said joe never got over losing his brother and he himself died in an industrial accident ten years later. Eddie spearitt also died last year and so never saw justice for his son. It's outrageous that it has taken twenty three years for the truth to come out but at least now it finally has.
