A report in the Independent about the cover up. RIP to the people who lost their lives on 15th April 1989.
And condolences to the families who are still suffering.

Vol what was shown on the telly was just a bit of it. People were watching it shocked. You couldn't take it all in. I think it would easy if you didn't have someone there to believe the worst.

The media were powerful at that time. Things are changing now. We know that.

Don't dwell on it. They have lost. Bettison looks like an idiot. He'll have to go. Duckenfield is going down if it gets to prosecutions. The country is on side now. Its in Cameron's best interests to see it through.

It's our time. JFT96

Alan Hansen talking about the tragedy.

Not all of us outside of Liverpool beleived the Suns lies. I remember watching the Poll Tax "riots" in 1990 and i clearly remember someone being trampled by a police horse.
But K. McKenzie and certain sections of society have such a hatred for working class people that those certain sections of society WANTED to belive the worst so they did.
There is still propaganda against the working classes in the press today. They vilify the unemployed they vilify single parents and disabled people. Disability hate crime is through the roof because papers like the Daily Mail wrongly claim that 75% of people on IB are "faking it" Then there is the Suns disgusting "shop a cheat" campaign inviting people to "grass" on their next door neighbour even though many Sun readers have very limited medical knowledge of any sort let alone variable health conditions.
Its this kind of vilification over time (years and years) that helps to permeate these attitudes and IT HAS TO STOP.

It's awful isn't it? There are also loads of c*nts on forums who repeatedly proclaim that Hillsborough was 'karma' after the Heysel.
It really beggars belief.

Growlithe · 15/09/2012 23:16

Doesn't matter what a few ignorant gits are saying on forums OneLastSoul - it's done now. The truth is out, the Commons are in agreement. The families have done it.

Remember Doreen Lawrence at the Olympic Ceremony? She got the truth too. How long did it take her?

As well as some fools, we have amazing people in this country, ordinary people who do extraordinary things in pursuit of justice. We always have, through history. That's why our justice system has been copied worldwide.

In this case its taken 23 years. That is really really bad. But the truth will always out.

anonacfr ive just read the Alan Hansen account. I really dont know what to say. JFT96 YNWA.

If Liverpudlians are emotional and sentimental, then that's a strength. That emotional streak has supported the families of the dead and injured in their fight for justice. A more stiff-upper-lip city would have left them fighting on their own.

I'm not a Liverpudlian but it's always struck me as a very distinctive city, with a proud identity. It's quite different to anywhere else in England - maybe it's partly to do with being a port, although there are other ports that aren't like Liverpool, maybe it's to do with the influence of the large Irish population down the generations. Whatever the cause, I think Liverpudlians should be extremely proud of the way they have stood together with the families of the 96 and the survivors as well.

The Liverpudlians should be proud of their empathy and compassion.
Ok this next anecdote is actually about someone from Newcastle but it is an example of how people from cities further north are friendly and compassionate. In Sept of 1989 i started at college. Unfortunately so did some of the twats who bullied me at school.
There was a girl from newcastle sitting next to me and a nasty arsehole from school behind me making really nasty comments about my looks/weight etc. Suddenly she turned around and told him to STFU or else. She got sent to the principals office.
She got herself into trouble for me and shed only known me for 20 minutes. We became good friends. She was lovely.

i also went to York for a long weekend 2 years ago for a friend/ex work colleauges wedding and everyone was sooo friendly and lovely and chatty. The attitude is certainly different from down south.
Sadly ive never been to Liverpool.

Quote David Cameron. Every time. He would be the last fan of scallies/thieves/benefit cheats. He said:

'The families have long believed that some of the authorities attempted to create a completely unjust account of events that sought to blame the fans for what happened.

Mr Speaker, the families were right.'

Keep quoting him. I can't stand him, but that speech was spot on.

I totally agree Growlithe I cannot stand Cameron or his politics (being a public sector worker) but that was the most honest speech I think I have ever heard a politician make. Every word was spot on and I have no doubt he absolutely meant what he said. I was open mouthed watching it live, I never expected such an honest assessment of what had gone on.

Watch it. It's on now. My brother walked down that tunnel. I feel sick.

I think Cameron meant it. It was an all party thing. The Independent panel is a new way of dealing with stuff like this. It isn't a political thing. The Labour Party didn't help the families either.

It's our time. This has to be shown primetime. I'm going to email ITV.

SuperB0F · 16/09/2012 01:00

Template- please amend if you can put it better, but otherwise copy and paste of you want to email them:

I think that you should prioritise showing Jimmy McGovern's TV drama of the Hillsborough disaster, given that it shows so much of the truth that has now finally come out. It needs to be broadcast at a time that most people can see it, rather than be relegated to the wee small hours.

It is so important, and showed the quality that ITV is capable of backing- please give this programme a wider audience,

JFT96

MyNeighbourIsStrange · 16/09/2012 01:05

So sad. It is indicitave of how many people in positions of trust and power harm others. What a crying shame it took so long for the truth to out. People who should never have had to go through tradgedy did. Those same people then had so many years of fighting on top of dealing with tradgedy. I hope some peace will enter their lives now.

MyNeighbourIsStrange · 16/09/2012 01:09

I can confirm that a friend of a friend her sister and Father perished that day, they were from SE England, not from Liverpool, so not all winging scoucers at all.

SuperB0F · 16/09/2012 01:16

The Scouser thing is almost a distraction: the point is that it could have happened to any community. It was easy for the authorities to build on anti-Liverpool stereotypes, but do not be deceived that they would have done the same to anybody else. It could have been anyone. Anyone's kids. So many young lives, just gone.

cartblanche · 16/09/2012 02:00

I am up at a stupid time of night watching Hillsborough. I've just emailed ITV and asked them to put it on at Primetime. WTF is it doing at this time of night? What a fucking brilliant programme and it was 1996? I know he would probably tell them to stuff it up their arses but Jimmy McGovern should get a Knighthood. I weep for the families that have fought and fought for justice. How did they have the energy when they must have been so debilitated by grief and hopelessness.
