A report in the Independent about the cover up. RIP to the people who lost their lives on 15th April 1989.
And condolences to the families who are still suffering.

Obviously the difference was that Sun readers felt themselves to be strivers in Maggie's crusade with millions just around the corner. For nearly all of them 25 years later the millions are still around the corner.

Darkesteyeswithflecksofgold · 15/09/2012 20:43

Ive just got back from my parents and my mum was banging on about Kate Middleton and asked me what i thought. I told her i dont care and that a massive cover up thats lasted a quarter of a century and lives that were lost is much more important.
Then it was announced on the news that Richard Desmond is considering shutting down the Irish Daily Star because of the Kate pictures.
What the Sun has done to the Hillsborough families and their lost loved ones is a fucking hundred thousand times worse than taking a picture of some womans tits.
This part of the world really needs to get its fucking priorities right.

Im sorry for the rant but im angry that the priorities in this society are so bloody upside down.

FFS. I'm with you on the rant. This is ridiculous.

Growlithe · 15/09/2012 21:02

Just don't buy the Sun. Don't look at the website either. It's horrible for many other reasons than Hillsborough. It's filthy.

Don't buy it for the cheap holidays. You and your family are worth so much more than a cheap holiday from the Sun.

While I'm at it, don't buy the Star either. They printed the lies too.

If you ever find yourself in a situation such as Hillsborough (God forbid) whip your phone out and take pictures. Post them on Facebook and Twitter. We publish the news now, and the police can't influence us.

VoldemortsNipple · 15/09/2012 21:06

In all honesty, I'm really not surprised. Even on mn, the Kate Middleton thread has twice as many posts. :(

Smart phones really have changed the media. Although you couldn't have had better media coverage back in the day than Hilsborough, it happened live on tv and the police still managed to cover it up. Look at Ian Thomlinson. It wouldn't have even come to light that he was attacked by the police if it wasn't for smartphones and the police still wormed their way out of it.

Darkesteyeswithflecksofgold · 15/09/2012 21:22

Exactly. The BBC were there televising the match for their "80s Saturday afternoon sports show Grandstand.
And yet the Sun and police mPS etc managed to brainwash a lot of the public to interpret what theyd actually seen in another way.

I was listening to radio merseyside on Wednesday. They were replaying coverage from the day and the ITV commentator was saying, The BBC is telling another story that the police opened the gates causing a crush. This is wrong, don't listen to the BBC.

This was during the immediate aftermath. Already lies being spun and fed to the media.

Darkesteyeswithflecksofgold · 15/09/2012 21:37

That explains why ITV news were focusing very hard on KMs assets earlier this evening!

OP posts:
Darkesteyeswithflecksofgold · 15/09/2012 21:38

And we are expected to believe that certain journalists were "duped" BOLLOCKS.

KMs assets as in Kate Middletons.

I was actually surprised how much tv coverage Hilsborough got this time round. Even the programme Hilsborough. The Truth. that the BBC aired last Sunday, was only aired in the North West. They obviously didn't think it was of public interest outside the North West. Sadly, they were probably right.

First mention on the news at ten, that hasn't happened in 23 years.

Growlithe · 15/09/2012 21:53

I know it was televised. Believe me, I was watching it. But the live coverage couldn't show everything, after all the cameras were set up to show the match.

My brother's mate's photos I spoke about upthread were amazingly telling. All the guys they were with skitted him for taking a camera. Who takes a camera to the match? Now everyone's got a camera in their pocket, many with the ability to get the photo onto social media, with comments, within a minute of taking it.

Social media often gets a bad rep. But its not always justified. Last year on Children in Need, Elliot Wild's mum told the heartbreaking story of losing her beloved son to leukaemia, in order to raise money for the Wirral children's hospice Claire House. #RIPELLIOT trended on Twitter worldwide. People in the US were posting 'Who is Elliot?'. His story reached far more people than expected.

The world is a great big open space now. That is only frightening for the people who have got things to hide.

Lol bof

I know it was limited Growlithe. Believe me I watched it too. Scanning the crowds for people we knew. Trying to take in what was happening. Listening unbelieving, as the numbers of the dead rose.

What I mean is during a time when many people didn't have a house phone, never mind a mobile phone with a camera on. The police could still cover up there mistakes.

I have never been able to understand how people could believe that the fans pissed on the dead and stole from them when the footage shows them desperately tying to pull people to safety, running them across the pitch on makeshift stretchers and performing CPR the best they could.

Growlithe · 15/09/2012 22:22

BOF Just googled cats that look like Hitler. Me and DH have just realised our cat looks like Hitler Shock

Sorry serious thread

Growlithe · 15/09/2012 22:24

Vol Because people like to believe the worst in people. Sad

VoldemortsNipple · 15/09/2012 22:28

Reading that back I've totally missed the point I was trying to make.

What I was trying to say is although limited, the whole event was aired live on tv. Considering that, they could still alter the mindset of most the country.

VoldemortsNipple · 15/09/2012 22:31

Darkest I stand corrected. It must have been ITV. We got it on Sunday. I'm glad it was shown nationally.
