Is this just a another shit example of the selfish society? Could the bus driver or one of the other passengers not just given her the 20p she needed for her fare?

Some people just love the little bit of power their jobs might give them. This bus driver is a case in point, although it was not his fault that the woman was raped.

LadyBeagleEyes · 08/06/2012 21:44

Quite, Ponders.
This is not a debate about rape, it's about how some members of society really don't give a shit.
I gave a teenage girl £2.50 the other day in the public toilet of the bus station.
She asked, and as a mum of a teen I'd hope someone would do the same.
She might have been a chancer, but then again maybe not.
I just hope she got home safely.

BlackOutTheSun · 08/06/2012 22:02

I know Ponders, but the bus driver as far as I know hasn't given his version of events.

flippinada · 08/06/2012 22:15

I'm with you LadyBeagleEye. Can't believe the callousness of some people.

That poor woman.

There but for the grace of God.

KateSpade · 08/06/2012 22:21

Tuna
You mention your husband getting warnings, & i know my bus company is a different one entirely, but how can one bus driver be understanding and not get told off by superiors but another the total opposite?

I've met some horrible bus drivers in my time (i get a free bus pass, so go most places by bus) & i mean absolute bastards.

One school lad was carrying an empty starbucks cup in his hand, the bus driver said 'Not a chance, get the fuck of my bus' (swearing and everything) He said 'Oh, its empty I'm just dunno put it in my bag' Bus driver, swore again told him to get off. Boy said, this is my last bus home (was around 6, & that particular bus stops at that time) driver swore again. In the end the boys friend took the cup off him & he was allowed to get on, made me so Angry

tunafortea · 08/06/2012 22:36

Kate, that's horrible. Sad
Not saying all bus drivers nice, but certainly not ALL gits.
Also, they do have to abide by company rules or face disciplinary action, my Dh is a case in point. His company fire first and worry about tribunal later Sad
Be interesting to know the rules of the bus company in question and what the driver actually did/didn't do.

Responsibility for the rape STILL LIES with the rapist alone though.
I hope they throw away the key. Angry

KateSpade · 08/06/2012 22:40

I know, it was awful.

Some people are just nasty by nature.

Of course it lies with the rapist, its scary knowing that happened so close to my Uni, when my friends walk home from work at 5am.

QuickLookBusy · 08/06/2012 22:40

Ponders I don't think anyone can question whether or not she was thrown off the bus. That is what was said in court and the jury believed her. The CCTV evidence was shown in court.

For the people quoted in the DM to say "lies were said in court" is vile and disgusting.

Ponders · 08/06/2012 22:48

I agree, Quick

but the "official" quoted clearly feels that as the evidence isn't in the public domain he can say what he likes.

tunafortea · 08/06/2012 22:48

Oh, didn't realise CCTV of her being ejected from bus. Sorry.
And if she said so in court and was believed, CCTV or not, thats the case anyway. Daily Fail is pretty vile at best of times tbh.
So, now need to know if driver was following rules of that particular company?
It is horrible if those are the rules.

I Qu'd my dh again tonight when he got home and he confirmed: yes, would be discipline for getting his own money out (stupid bloody rule). He did say they are allowed to carry schoolkids if no money and they are supposed to give name and address and promise to take money into bus station (something like, am tired now!). I think he said some leeway over last bus situation but I'll check with him tomorrow.
Still think it slightly distracts from the rapist responsibility.

JellyBoatsAndPirates · 08/06/2012 23:43

Wow. Just seen the posts about it should be made so that bus fares are put up to accommodate all the people not being able to pay.
How will that work, then?! Are you not aware that there is a recession on, or that the price of public transport is extortionate lately?!
It costs a fortune to start with, especially if you travel regularly, so can't see that going down well!
All it needs is a compassionate driver who isn't going to kick a person off the bus at 3am in the morning for the sake of 20 measly p.

It just takes a bit of blatant common sense. Anyone with a scrap of human decency wouldn't turf a lone woman off the bus at that time in the morning just for the sake of 20p.

BoneyBackJefferson · 08/06/2012 23:46

tuna

its hard to tell because the quote isn't linked but wasn't the official talking about the driver not the rape?

BoneyBackJefferson · 08/06/2012 23:48

"Anyone with a scrap of human decency wouldn't turf a lone woman off the bus at that time in the morning just for the sake of 20p."

Unless there is a good chance that he would lose his job.

funnyperson · 08/06/2012 23:52

There isn't a good chance that the driver would have lost his job, is there?

funnyperson · 09/06/2012 00:00

I wouldn't mind if some of my taxes went to fund a free night bus.

Anyway I read that the rapist will be sentenced on 27th July. I hope he is sentenced for life.

TheNightWatch · 09/06/2012 00:00

Ive given the odd 50p to afew people. Mainly school children who wouldve got turfed off the bus. Once late on a night a group of teenage girls got on the bus and she'd lost her bus pass, her friend all got their coppers out and were 12p short and the driver demanded she got off. And she did before I had chance to take in what was going on and get to the front of the bus to give her the money. Its just awful.

JellyBoatsAndPirates · 09/06/2012 00:12

How the Jeff will somebody lose their job over funding a 20p out of their own pocket? How would the Jobsworths powers that be in charge even KNOW?! How do they even know if you've given a 20p to a woman at 3am?! Is there cameras trained on them at all times? If so, I could appreciate his stance a bit more. If not though, then shame on all the passengers who could have stepped in and given 20p. Bloody hell, I'm always terminally skint and never have any spare money, and am loathe to give to people begging - but even I on my non existent spare money could have given a loan woman at 3 in the morning 20p, FFS,

JellyBoatsAndPirates · 09/06/2012 00:13

lone woman not loan. Argh hate typos

ThatVikRinA22 · 09/06/2012 00:21

i cannot believe that not one person offered that woman 20p. Had it been their daughter, or niece, or grand daughter, i wonder how they would feel.

is there really just no common decency left? who would let a young woman be ejected from a bus for the sake of 20p really?? god i despair.

those saying it was the rapist fault - of course it was but its sliding door syndrome isnt it - had she been given 20 p he may not have found a victim. who can say what would have happened.
he may have tried to find a victim and may have been seen, or caught before he inflicted the type of injuries on her that he did, or he may have killed someone - but discussing what may or may not have happened had someone given that girl the money is by the by.
someone should have given her 20p. that no one didnt is a measure of the humanity on that bus that night.

claig · 09/06/2012 00:26

The public don't have to pay. Pubs, clubs, bars, restaurants etc. could all pay a small increase in tax, since they are the ones that benefit from people being out late at night. The cost of the few people who can't pay the full fare is minimal and businesses could easily be made to cover it, similar to how football clubs have to sometimes pay for extra policing or stewarding.

There are lots of different solutions to this, but it requires someone to take it seriously. Reading this story, should force people in power to take it very seriously.

Poulay · 09/06/2012 01:21

The bus driver wouldn't let her off the 20p, which is fair enough, but surely the mother must be feeling more guilt for not coming to pick her up rather than making her walk across the city?

claig · 09/06/2012 06:33

Poulay, an earlier report that I read, said that the mother asked her to meet her at the outskirts, because she was not confident of driving in town. Lots of people feel that way about driving.

The bus company said the driver "didn't follow his training".

BoneyBackJefferson · 09/06/2012 08:40

funnyperson
"There isn't a good chance that the driver would have lost his job, is there?"

If you read up thread there is.

juiol · 09/06/2012 08:48

Its no-ones fault but the rapists. As for the driver or the passengers why should they have given her the money? She's an adult and so should have ensured she had sufficient money for the bus not expect to be bailed out by total strangers.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 09/06/2012 09:18

Why should they?because it was a decent and kind thing to do maybe?
