Is this just a another shit example of the selfish society? Could the bus driver or one of the other passengers not just given her the 20p she needed for her fare?

Sorry, claig that was all they said on the bulletin then I googled, came back to post and saw you had found the extra info.

I don't know what the answer to stop this happening again is. Where the bus driver refused her to get on, there are loads of cash points, it would have taken less than 2 minutes for her to have got the cash. At that time of night, at that time of year there would have been loads of people. One report I read said people were pushing and shoving to get on to the bus, to me that suggests there were more than a few.

I, also, read that if the young girl hadn't have been found so quickly, she would have probably died!

scottishmummy · 08/06/2012 20:52

claig forgo your fripperies when folk dont have free buses.seeing you're so clearly aghast at thus unmet need. campaign vigorously , contact mp and bus company

landofsoapandglory · 08/06/2012 20:53

Our last bus from the local town(if you can call it that) is at 5pm!

claig · 08/06/2012 20:57

Yes, they should make debit and credit card readers mandatory on all night buses.

They wanted to spend £15 billion on ID cards, and they spent hundreds of billions bailing out banks, but they can't introduce a regulatory and training system to ensure that bus companies don't chuck people off buses at 3 am for being 20p short of a £5 fare. And they say we should use public transport, while they get expenses for bath plugs, moats, duck houses and taxis.

claig · 08/06/2012 20:59

'claig forgo your fripperies when folk dont have free buses.seeing you're so clearly aghast at thus unmet need. campaign vigorously , contact mp and bus company'

That's a job that we pay our taxes for councillors and politicians to do. I'm saying what I think should happen and if I was a councillor that is what I would kick a fuss up about.

scottishmummy · 08/06/2012 21:01

channel your ire then. councillor is your public representative, available to represent you and your local concerns

claig · 08/06/2012 21:03

'Our last bus from the local town(if you can call it that) is at 5pm!'

Yes, it's a piss take. So old age pensioners who want to visit their families or friends in town can't visit them after working hours.

claig · 08/06/2012 21:05

'channel your ire then. councillor is your public representative, available to represent you and your local concerns'

I don't live in Nottingham.

AnyFucker · 08/06/2012 21:05

well, I've had a couple of glasses of wine, so heart rules head just now

I feel so sorry for that young woman, and am not sure how any of this is at all helpful

I would have given her the 20p at any time of day or night

I hope the bus driver isn't being scapegoated, and I fully expect (and hope) he is going through some agonies of conscience

the "fellow" pasengers too

most of all, though, I hope that rapist gets his just punishment, in more ways than one

LadyBeagleEyes · 08/06/2012 21:06

As people have said, it was the rapist that was the criminal.
But, I secretly hope that the bus driver has a few sleepless nights for realising on that particular night, instead of being a jobsworth, he could have made sure that all his passengers got to their particular destination.
Same goes for the passengers that could have handed over 20p.

weatherrain · 08/06/2012 21:09

Would the bus driver have to put in the missing 20p at the end of the day? I suppose he wouldn't be thrilled about paying in night passengers's missing bus fares if he had to pocket out on a regular basis.

chocolatespiders · 08/06/2012 21:10

Such a sad story...

Feel so sick to think of the girls mum driving looking for her at that time of night, I know how my tummy ties in knots when I am waiting for my teenager and she is late- such a horrible feeling.

scottishmummy · 08/06/2012 21:10

did you only want free buses in n'ham?
diesnt mean you cannot agitate and campaign your councillor
or make voluntary ongoing donation for free buses. in n'ham and elsewhere

BoffinMum · 08/06/2012 21:15

Did someone mention the difficulties in providing free buses?

OK, so it's fine for everyone to have a free bus pass after the age of 65, regardless of income or whatever, but it's not OK to be sympathetic to the needs of young people who also need to use public transport in different circumstances?

edam · 08/06/2012 21:16

Good grief. That poor woman.

I hope all the passengers and the ruddy driver have seen what happened and are feeling desperately sad and ashamed. The swines - a tiny, tiny act of kindness could have made such a huge difference to her.

claig · 08/06/2012 21:19

You are nitpicking now. I didn't say I wanted free buses, I said that most customers would pay. For teh small number that don't have enough money, I think the bus company should consider that a running cost, and their managing director could take a smaller salary and they could cut canteen costs and take insurance. I also think that local pubs and clubs should be taxed to pay for the cost to cover lost fares of the small number of people who don't pay.

Most people are honest and would pay. Some people would not have enough money for honest reasons and a small percentage would take liberties. But groups of 5 with no money should not be allowed on, but single people should.

The company even says that he didn't follow his training, which possibly implies that he should have let her on. That is what I think needs to happen in all towns in future. One person being raped, mugged, knifed or murdered is not acceptable for the sake of not having enough bus fare at 3 am.

claig · 08/06/2012 21:21

Agree, BoffinMum. OAPs get free bus passes. The cost of waiving fares at 3 am is minimal. Where there's a will there's a way.

BlackOutTheSun · 08/06/2012 21:24

So on this page alone its Oh yes lets hope the bus driver is feeling guilty and having a few sleepless night. Yet the vile bastard who raped her, nope nothing said about him Hmm

BlackOutTheSun · 08/06/2012 21:25

oh bar 1

scottishmummy · 08/06/2012 21:26

many local authorities have free bus pass for school kids
and discretionary passes for physical and/or mh needs after assessment
taxi card schemes
there is existing provision for vulnerable groups
however a lot of these schemes are under cyst reviews

there is not unlimited funds to provide free night travel

claig · 08/06/2012 21:29

Everybody deplores what he did. In my opinion, we should have much tougher sentences, where life means life. But we know that won't happen. There will always be rapists, muggers and murderers, but we should make sure that people don't fall prey to them by being chucked off buses at 3 am and being stranded alone at night, when many of these type of people are on the streets.

Ponders · 08/06/2012 21:31

"'What happened that night was a truly shocking incident,' says Alex Hornby, commercial director of the bus company Trent Barton which owns Pronto Bus.
'Immediately after the incident, a full and detailed investigation was launched.'
What that investigation found is not clear and when approached by the Mail last week, drivers with the company were determined to shield the identity of their colleague
'You won't get a word out of us,' said one official. 'Lies have been said in court and we are not commenting on what our driver may or may not have done. The papers say the passenger was thrown off the bus. We think otherwise'
Detective Chief Inspector Rob Griffin, who led the investigation into the attack, told the Mail that police did speak to the bus driver, but his actions did not breach any laws.
That might be so. But morally, his actions raise clear questions.
'It was a stupid, ridiculous thing to do and he must have it on his conscience,' a driver with a rival firm told the Mail. 'None of our drivers would have done that.'"

I do think the CCTV of the girl trying to get on the bus should be shown (with pixellated faces, & distorted voices if necessary) - either she was refused permission to board the bus (aka "thrown off") or she wasn't Hmm

claig · 08/06/2012 21:32

'there is not unlimited funds to provide free night travel'

You can make it a stipulation of the bus operator's licence. Businesses would find a way to meet the obligation, just as pubs have to pay for music licences etc.

If it was made a priority and the training was mandatory and enforced, then this would never happen again.

Putthatbookdown · 08/06/2012 21:32

The bus drivers' rule is : you let the person on the bus but you take their particulars so they can pay the fare later- ideally they will go to the Depot themselves and pay before you have to chase them

Ponders · 08/06/2012 21:36

Blackout, the OP & entire thread are about the bus driver & passengers, who between them could have prevented this particular rape.

The rapist probably would have attacked someone else instead that night, if this girl had been allowed on the bus, & that someone else would have been as much of an innocent victim as this girl, but maybe a different wrong-place-wrong-time assault that night wouldn't have been preventable. This one was.
