Here is a question.

Muslims says that the prophet cannot be protrayed and that for anyone to do so is a basphamy. But how can you blaspheme something you don't belive in?

As I understand it orthodox Jews say that it is a blasphamy for someone to write out the word of god. They would write G*d. Does this mean that Jews have the right to demand that Muslims stop writing the word Allah (since Muslims worship the same god as Christians and Jews)

It's mumsnet, Jim, but not as we know it.

peacedove · 07/02/2006 14:55

MB I wouldn't be surprised, although I haven't thougth of that at all. There is a lot incommon to all the three Abrahamic religions, there may be more religions (Sabaeas, etc., but again I don't have research on that).

Marina · 07/02/2006 14:57

I think we may have some klingons well to starboard of USS Common Sense...

Blandmum · 07/02/2006 14:58

pd, he said there is a point in the service (appols if wrong word) where you are not supposed to look up. As a child he did and saw the Cohenim (sp?the people taking that part of the service at any rate) making the sign with both hands.

Decades later it morphed into the vulcan salute.

And I stand by what I say, 7 of 9 would be an incitement to riot in a burka, let alone hejab

Expat

I though the post somewhat condecending as well. As yet she has not responded

I actually hold the US responsible for much of the current "Islam vs The West" alienation agenda.
Tp put it into a context I view it like this.Sorry my history only starts from September 11th.
The fallout from Sept 11th, GWB alienates all US Muslims esp the chaps.
He/we then invades Afghanistan
Then Iraq
Then allows Israel to isolate Yasser Arafat- causing him to lose control of militant groups within the occupied territories.
Causing more flak in return from Israel.
Now with all the pressure on Iran.
Who's next one wonders.
It is little wonder that a minority of Islamists choose to martyr themselves or to wreak terror. I do not agree with it but understand it.
Looking back to the Cold War - the mistrust of the US and the USSR.
Now who else heard that Russia have offered to enrich uranium on behalf of Iran to seek a compromise.

The mind boggles...
I am scared for the world if we cannot learn to understand each others beliefs and cultures - we have to live alongside each other, so as the Tory Vice Chair Sayeeda thingymabob put it last night on Newsnight, we need to find the middle ground and cement our focus on the majority of muslims who contribute much to our society.
Stop giving the malevolent minority all the coverage. this is not helping us learn about the faith and the people! it's making us suspicious and scared and insecure and reactive.

Blandmum · 07/02/2006 15:00

Piffle, re the russian and the rnritching uranium thing, that has been on the BBC news lots of times. So I would think that quite a lot of people know.

MB, that posts reads to me like another way of writing, 'There, there, dear. You don't agree w/me, so I'm going to tell you how misguided and stupid you are.'

You're not the first whose had such a post directed at her, either.

Piffle · 07/02/2006 15:02

I wasn't meaning to insult anyone just thought it was kind of funny (peculiar not ha ha) how much has changed in 25 years.

uwila · 07/02/2006 15:22

Oh right, Piffle. George W. Bush created the terrorism. Did you know the he is also is responsible for hurricane Katrina? And I don't mean the mismanagement of it's aftermath. I mean he's responsible for hurricane's existance.

expatinscotland · 07/02/2006 15:27

Yes, he's personally responsible for every bad thing on the planet. All of it. And every single person currently in the entire nation is collusive in all his sorcery.

uwila · 07/02/2006 15:30

Don't forget the ones not currently in the nation but who still lay claims to being American -- and God forgive any who might be proud of such a misfortune.

expatinscotland · 07/02/2006 15:32

Indeed. Having expatriated myself, of course, means I have entirely forgotten what it's like to live there - it's only my entire family and close friends I go to visit, no one special. Therefore my opinion of the place has absolutely no credibility at all. There are, after all, many who have never set foot there who know the place far, far better than 31 years ever taught me. Just by reading newspapers and websites and such.

Caligula · 07/02/2006 15:47

Uwila, Bush may not have created the terrorism, but US foreign policy in the middle east over decades, has undoubtedly contributed to the climate of powerlessness and fury (a dangerous mix) in which terrorism has flourished.

expatinscotland · 07/02/2006 15:53

And Britain's Balfour Declaration had nothing to do with it. Nor Europe's carving up Northern African into colonies w/little to no regard to existing religious or ethnic divides.

Righty o.

snowleopard · 07/02/2006 15:56

It's funny, I also thought of the Borg last night when trying to have a rational argument with Saadia. Not that Islam itself can be comparedto the Borg, but fundamentalist Muslims who want the world to become Islam and cannot conceive of any other point of view.

However, trekkie fans, do you remember when Capt. Jane Safeway said something along the lines of "We are the Borg too, we think our way is right, we think we've rescued Seven and made her see the light - we're just as bad as them really".

Profound.

expatinscotland · 07/02/2006 15:58

And just who partitioned India and Pakistan, leading to years of intense conflict ever since? B/c if we're going to point fingers and lay blame, well, let's all join in here and step up!

the partition of india

Blandmum · 07/02/2006 16:00

I personaly lay all the blame on the French for the norman conquest and the Vikings for invading the north of england.....every ill is at their feet

expatinscotland · 07/02/2006 16:02

Yes, and suckering people into wine addictions. All their fault as well.

And those damned Aztecs w/their chocolate!

tarantula · 07/02/2006 16:03

Us vikings are good so we are!! At least we washed more often than the smelly saxons.

snowleopard · 07/02/2006 16:04

You're a bit touchy expat! But you are right. I'm English and there's a reason most English people would be ashamed to fly their own flag (unless they happened to be neonazis). We have a lot to be ashamed of. And don't forget how many English & British people no longer have any time for Tony Blair since he became Bush's lapdog.

Blandmum · 07/02/2006 16:06

oy, stop oppressing me , you viking horde , you!

OP posts:
tarantula · 07/02/2006 16:12

But oppression is what I do best and rape and pillage come a close second; according to the media at the time anyway. Funnily enough they happened to be saxon monks hmmmmmm makes you wonder doesnt it

expatinscotland · 07/02/2006 16:13

Hey, I'm married to a Viking descendant, you, you, wife of an RAF person you!

Fact is, snow, the entire West, including the US, has been duffing up in Asia for hundreds of years. Not just one country. EVERYONE in the West who stood by and watched it happen colluded in it. Saying it's all one country's fault is . . . well, I think we saw what happens w/that after WWI.

expatinscotland · 07/02/2006 16:14

Saxon monks?! ! But weren't they supposed to be celibate after the Synod of Whitby, when they rejected the Celtic Church in favour of rule from Rome??

Blandmum · 07/02/2006 16:14

There, there dear, I'm sure you were much defamed.

Your forefathers were just trying to get Britain to engage with Europe. they were just a little over enhusiastic and excitable, I'm sure
