Here is a question.

Muslims says that the prophet cannot be protrayed and that for anyone to do so is a basphamy. But how can you blaspheme something you don't belive in?

As I understand it orthodox Jews say that it is a blasphamy for someone to write out the word of god. They would write G*d. Does this mean that Jews have the right to demand that Muslims stop writing the word Allah (since Muslims worship the same god as Christians and Jews)

There is a point, Rhubarb, and this thread revealed something that the other thread did not.I don't want to say what it is, because I have already talked about it ad nauseum, and I don't want this to appear as a personal vendetta.

as for my religion being better than theirs, I don't think I have being preaching to anyone about the wonders of Hinduism, have I? I only mentioned when someone accused us of all being Jesus worshippers.Obviously, we all think our religion is better than the next. I would hope that we could learn to live together, but I would be very uneasy about living with someone who wants to try and sentence me for believing that Mohammed was not the true prophet, but simply a man like any other.

However, I will agree with you that this thread has run its course, but I don't think it should be deletd.

You haven't scoffed that chocolate bar, yet, have you? I can tell.( wink)

ruty · 07/02/2006 10:26

Rhubarb i feel bad that i lost my rag yesterday but you must remeber it was not just people who have a Faith that descended into a slanging match, it was athiests too. That is because we are all flawed, whether we have a Faith or not. I felt particularly provoked by nanneh and I did not deal with her comments very well - partly because I was also dealing with a sick child and should not have been on MN at all. I still personally think it is not right to deliberately try to cause offence to anyone's faith, but i still feel creating a bill that would restrict free speech is problematic. Now I must apologize for my part in yesterday's shebang and go.

expatinscotland · 07/02/2006 10:31

Just reading this thread, I realise that perhaps some people, when they have relationship problems w/their partners, it may be b/c they cannot seem to just let things go and just walk away.

The 'I've had enough. Goodbye' posts and then they're back in two seconds to write the same thing or attack the same folks. Over and over.

FFS, is that what you do at home? That'd be enough to drive a person insance.

And NO, this is not directed a poppadum, uwila or Rhubarb.

kittyfish · 07/02/2006 10:34

Wish I had time to post on here all day and night

poppadum · 07/02/2006 10:36

Oh dear, expat, that's me, isn't it, though you very kindly said it was not! Guilty as charged! and now i have done it again. I do drive my husband insane; however he does the same.

To be honest, one reason why I am hovering i
that I have an interview with a fairly snooty author at 11.00 am ( i'm a journalist), and I am so nervous that I am trying to distract myself by blathering on here.

ruty · 07/02/2006 10:36

don't worry expat, i think its time i left MN too.

expatinscotland · 07/02/2006 10:37

NO, poppadum, it's not you. Nowhere did you say, 'I've had enough, I'm leaving' and then come back two minutes letter to call out the same folks.

And FWIW, I agree w/you 100%.

expatinscotland · 07/02/2006 10:38

I don't know much about India, btw, except from what I've learned from my aunt's husband, who is from Kerela. He's a Christian who now has dual nationality as both an Indian and US citizen.

JoolsToo · 07/02/2006 10:39

more on THAT apology

snowleopard · 07/02/2006 10:40

"Goading" - no it wasn't! What I saw was people - me included - challenginG Saadia's arguments on logical andf rational grounds, and asking sensible questions, which she failed to answer.

It's only "goading" if goading means daring to point out that something isn't making sense. Saadia resorted to feeling sorry for herself and complaining about being attacked instead of answering the questions with her brain engaged.

kittyfish · 07/02/2006 10:41

What a plank the man is.

expatinscotland · 07/02/2006 10:42

What a lovely excuse for a person, JT. .

Can't imagine how those families felt when they saw that! Just like I can't get the image of that incredibly beautiful woman, Shahara Islam, who was killed in Tavistock Square by a man not more than a few steps away from her.

kittyfish · 07/02/2006 10:44

What can you expect from a twat who deals coke & heroin?

Blu · 07/02/2006 10:48

If only it had been summer, and our Wintersun not so long in coming!

Her views are so close to those of the many muslims amongst my friends and family, none of whom want to introduce sharia law!

I only saw tv footage of the demonstrations in London for the first time last night. The camera panned along the whole of the demo, as they arrived. It was FAR smaller than I imagined from the general reaction, and although the slogans were outrageous, they had obviously all been made by one person (same felt tip script and style), and it was a quickly pulled together rent-a-rabble.

(I have seen slogans threatening to kill people from the revolutionary parties outside Brixton tube, and elswhere, inciting people to attack an alleged paedophile)

I think this is a far cry fom the serious political plotting and trouble-stirring that leads to real terrorism. People who have taken part in terror attacks have typically kept their profiles very very low indeed. I honestly expect that most of that lot got slapped by their Mums when they got home.

People have not taken to the streets in Oldham or Bradford, the cafes in Brick Lane yesterday were brimming with hospitality and bustle as usual...for all their customers.

I'm talking about London, not the real burnings in other countries, or the separate and real threat from islamic terrorists.

Iprobably need to duck!

Caligula · 07/02/2006 10:57

I presume he discovered Islam after his foray into drug-dealing. I don't know what the Koran says about the penalties for that.

MT, I think you're reading all the threads with the bias you're accusing everyone else of. To see reasonable questions as goading is to make Saadia a helpless victim.

Anyway, I'm sorry if I inadvertently upset anyone (it would have been inadvertent, because I genuinely am not interested in upsetting virtual strangers on the internet, I'm just passionate about the issues) and I hope that Aloha and Saadia feel able to come back to Mumsnet - no-one wants either of them to go as a result of these threads.

I'm rather glad I went to bed at a reasonable time last night.

ruty · 07/02/2006 10:58

well expat, you've confirmed that for me then Just for the record, I didn't do what you accused some people of yesterday, but
I've done it for the first time now. Thanks anyway.

Caligula · 07/02/2006 10:58

Oh yes, Wintersun, what a breath of fresh air you are. And of course you shouldn't have to justify yourself. You're not responsible for the actions of a few loons.

uwila · 07/02/2006 11:00

So, is sharia law something of an extremist interest and not a typical wish of the average muslim?

Can we stop mud slinging and actually discuss the topic? Or should I give up?

Blu · 07/02/2006 11:04

I have never met a muslim living in this country - or my DP's family's country - who wanted to introduce Sharia law, or supports it in other countries. That includes African muslims at my place of work, Pakistani, Arabic and 'diasporic' Muslims, british born and 1st generation immigrant. And all to some extend observing a religious relationship with Islam.

Caligula · 07/02/2006 11:13

None of the muslims I know are remotely interested in having sharia. Uwila, here's a BBC link for you

bbc guide

kittyfish · 07/02/2006 11:13

I think that Sharia Law is itself a bit extreme isn't it? Maybe that is why the average Muslim doesn't want it imposed.

uwila · 07/02/2006 11:17

AH.... Thanks guys. Will read that BBC link a bit later. Must do SOME work today, you know.

mamaaaa · 07/02/2006 11:25

Hooray for Blu and Wintersun! I have only skimmed these threads. I have been shocked and had my blood boiling at some of the posts, but my faith in humanity has been restored by Blu and Wintersun.

ruty · 07/02/2006 11:37

i have just reread my posts yesterday. I didn't realise how much I'd c*cked it up. I think I was gratuitous in my aggression towards nanneh because I misunderstood what she was saying, brcause i was doing three things at the same time. Nanneh, I'm sorry. Please accept my apology.
