Happy New Year!

This is the place for you if you have made a New Year's Resolution to get on top of the chaos in your home

Here you can do any of the following:

  • repeat or start baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering

Here you can find out what it is all about. Try to ignore the cutesy stuff - cute the regulars on here are not! We also take some of the suggestions with a HUGE dose of salt (look out for wearing tie up shoes in the house)

If you decide to register for the e-mail updates from flylady be warned: unless you choose the daily digest only option you will be innundated with e-mails throughout the day. I will post the links you need each day so you don't need to register on the site to join in.

Dive in and mark your place - we start on January 1st!

OP posts:

PMSL at sheet link! I then couldn't resist clicking on "how to fold a thong" - brilliant. Does everyone fold their knickers? I just shove them in a drawer.

Back later, need to go find some fitted sheets to fold....

WhereChaosTheoryRules · 12/01/2010 20:29

Mrs Dinky - yes generally but not if in hurray. its time dependant here. but it fits nicer in the drawer if folded. Dont iron them though [madness or TMTOH]

Okay so quick up date and i'm off to do more
Primary observations done
Cook tea done
Plan and sort resources physical Done paper to do.
Paperwork write up from primary done
Clothes folded and away done
ironing Turned right way out only
Filing the paperwork mountain
Ds bedtime in progress - grannie's dealing with as he has been procrastinating. Tis one of the pros being stuck here.
Eat healthy failed
Library books failed lost the bit of paper with the pin number on
Photocopying.

swanriver · 12/01/2010 20:40

Wow that is amazing Fitted Sheet Origami here we go

going to try it out on linen cupboard

MrsDinky · 12/01/2010 21:14

Evening

Well, I feel like I have had a busy day, but I haven't actually managed anything much on my list, rather depressingly.

2 lots of washing - 2nd lot in dryer
Swish and swipe with extra mission bits - SandS only so far
Declutter bathroom - no
Disassemble unused party bags, put away unused plastic cups etc - no
Decluttering - our bedroom is a lost cause till DH moves the coffee table back out of there, can hardly get in the door. Will have a go at DCs bedrooms. - sort of, sorted out a giant pile of too small clothes for clothes bank/NCT sale, bagged the clothes bank ones and put them in the car boot (out of sight etc)
Dishwasher - done

Have also done a bit of general wiping down and dusting, played with DD quite a bit, vague menu planning plus weekly shop at Sainsburys, decluutered kitche a bit whilst putting food away AND, cleaned the rubber seal round the freezer door.

WCTR - I have also failed at Eat Healthy. I am going to join in with Diet Babysteps as proposed by OM.

Tibni - impressive gym attendance! I am about to cancel my membership as it is not getting used . I am rubbish at exercise, have yet to find anything that I do not find boring or inconvenient for some reason. So that's no to
Gym - boring and depressing (full of yummy mummies from school)
Swimming - boring and trashes my hair, Running - cold
Aerobics - never seems to be on at a time I can go to, but I do quite like it.
Fitness DVDs - even with Flying there is no room to swing a cat in the room where DVD player is, much less leap around like Davina.

Any suggestions please? I did discuss power walking on here with someone a few weeks ago, was that you SC? Are you doing it? More like power skating here at the moment. I have seen people ski down my street this week). Anyway I am rambling. Off to fold my knickers.

sep1712 · 12/01/2010 21:19

Hi All, you've all been very busy.

Still counting, thanks for the ham tips. I usually put it with pasta aswell. I'm going try to make a ham, leek and potatoe pie.

The Wii fit is a great idea, you can get hot a sweaty if you like or calm and stretchy. Its a great thing to do with the kids. Helps you keep check on your weight. It doesn't cost anything and you don't need to go out in pulic with stretchy fabric on! Give it a go, it is fun and i hate formal exercise.

I'm up for the water mission, anyone else?

Flying going okish...
well the house is tidy and clean by i haven't really done much.

I did go to the farm shop for my meat and veggies, organized my meal plan for the next two weeks. Placed my on line order.

Sorted some paperwork for the buisness. Has anyone ever registered a buisness with companies house??? Its now the second time i have sent it back. I'm in deep water here!!!

Made a lovely sausage and bean casserole for tea.

To do
Organize for tomorrow as i'm at work. (ye har someone let me out hehe) thats if the snow stays away.

Enjoy your linen everyone, i'm not even going there!!!

Enjoy flying

MrsGokWantsatidyhouse · 12/01/2010 21:30

DC3 fell a sleep eating his dinner tonight . It was an absolute classic, You've Been Framed moment.

Just need to do my evening routine when I am feeling a little more energetic.

Must remember to put some things on Freecycle and also ring my SIL to see if she has managed to book the hall for DS1's birthday. If I don't add them to my list tomorrow, someone kick me.

Hope everyone has a relaxing evening.

optimisticmumma · 12/01/2010 21:56

Sep - OK you've sold me on the Wii fit - will see if I can work it out once the DC have gone out!!
Mrs D - what about the 10,000 steps thing? I'm with you on the exercise front although I did have a discussion about doing Salsa with DH!!Trouble is he can't be pinned down to a specific night - work is as long as a piece of string (he's not home even now! )
People who want to do 'healthy eating' babysteps I suggest we just add the 'drink two litres of water ' to the daily to do list. Is this OK DWM? (Don't want to hijack the thread as SC said). Each week someone could come up with a new one...?

Off to make a cuppa - no biscuits - alcohol out for me for now (well tonight at least!!)

StillCounting · 12/01/2010 22:05

Hello everyone, just dashing in and out ...

So sorry, some great weight loss and exercise tips being suggested .... will come back and look at those again in detail tomorrow .... need to sort out a bit of washing before bed

..plus I would love to know how to fold a fitted sheet properly (it's something that defeats me completely)

.. also fascinated by how a cat turns a computer screen upside down (have I got that right? - just speed-read it)

Tues is my day off which translates (once all the necessary chores have been done) in to about 4 straight hrs just for myself - yippeeee!!! (I know I'm really lucky to have that amount of time during the week!!!)

Before Flat Fairy guidance, always made the mistake of saying "oh, can't do this or that because master bedroom a mess or home office still a mess" and so have dithered about, sort of doing housework (in a very unfocused and half-hearted way) and half doing something I enjoyed - but not doing either properly - and ended up feeling guilty because I hadn't enjoyed my leisure time and the house hadn't really benefited either...

Well today I decided on a different strategy and took myself off to an art gallery and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Paintings were breath-takingly wonderful (Titian, Memling, Rubens) but best bit was just sitting by myself in a café drinking a wonderful cup of coffee in total silence tbh!!!!

Hopefully this will give me the motivation to tackle the other more boring stuff during the rest of the week (well that's the theory anyway!!!)

Catch up properly tomorrow ... am v. v. impressed with all the Flying that's been going on here today - you lot are positively soaring!!!

feetheart · 12/01/2010 22:10

Post will be much shorter than this morning!

This afternoon have managed:
Cat litter (have added it to morning routine!)
Make and eat pizza
Hoover downstairs, hall and stairs
Surprise craft activity not needed as DD went to friend's to play
Mission - no
Hotspot - bedside table!
5 mins - sorted sewing tin into a bigger one so it has a lid that actually fits!
15 mins - no
Still need to finish this evening's washing up and shine sink.

Lemony Bread and Butter Pudding recipe as requested, its a bit made up from a Pampered Chef one I had a couple of years ago.

Croissants, brioche or panetone
White chocolate, v roughly chopped
Blueberries
1/2pt double cream
1/2 jar lemon curd
I used 3 eggs but would try 2 next time

Put croisssants, choc and blueberries in dish.
Mix lemon curd, cream and eggs together and pour over other stuff. Leave to soak for a while (think I left it for about an hour)
Cook for about 40mins at 180C
Enjoy

droitwichmummy · 12/01/2010 22:22

Hi everyone

Been dashing around trying to work out what I need to pack for tomorrow and done some ironing in the process.

Not doing round up tonight as need to get to bed.

Post healthy eating/fitness/wellness steps as much as you like mine for tomorrow is a nice hotel room all to myself for the night - no cats sleeping on head or waking me up & no DS waking me up in the night to sort his bed out

See you in the morning! SC if ellie has not appeared could you post on Thursday morning please? Looking back at Friday's posts she was having laptop problems which might explain where she has gone

MiniMarmite · 12/01/2010 22:29

Evening All

I remember seeing that fitted sheet thread too...although I haven't actually tried it myself

OM We love the Wii Fit too. I particularly like hula hooping, especially after a couple of drinks

I too am failing in the healthy eating department. Well, I eat mainly healthy food but just lots of it! That lemony bread and butter pudding recipe sounds lovely feetheart...now I just need some of Tibni's motivation for the gym...I did to yesterday but that will probably be it for the week.

How old is littleGok MrsGok? How cute that he fell asleep in his dinner!

Hoping to get a bit more motivation on the flying front this week so sat down with DH and worked out a bit of a plan. Also need to get to bed before 11 too as we're both exhausted! And on that note, I'm off.

Goodnight

AmeliaJaneAgain · 12/01/2010 22:30

Hi All, thanks for the warm welcome and good wishes. MMMango baby was born on 24th November, she is my second (DS1 is 2.4). DWM thanks for that link, I hadn't come across that page and it has some useful tips - In particular I think I need to get a sling, any suggestions anyone?

Thought I'd share an entertaining exchange with DH when he came home from work yesterday...

DH "Wow, what have you done to the sink"
Me "I've cleaned it"
DH "look how shiney the taps are"
Me "Yes, I've cleaned them"
DH "But it's like, really clean"
Me "Yes... because I've cleaned it"

Bless him, he was a superstar while I recovered from the c-section but although he tidied regularly I don't think he actually cleaned anything the whole time. Glad he noticed though... now I just need to keep it that way.

Didn't get so much done today due to the wailing infant (hence the need for the sling) and DS is home from nursery tomorrow too so not sure how much time I'll have - your long lists of achievements are putting me to shame - let's see how I get on.

StillCounting · 12/01/2010 22:34

Right you are Mummy - no prob. Hope you have a good trip.

G'night all...

missbennett · 12/01/2010 22:48

Well, looks as though everybody has been very productive in lots of different ways! I am exhausted just reading it all!

Here's my contribution.....

-mission - done
-sweep kitchen floor - not done
-ironing - not done

Oh dear

But I have:

-been to aqua cise with friend, who comes for tea first and NOTICED THAT MY HOUSE LOOKS TIDIER AND ESPECIALLY THE KITCHEN!!!

So I am very very pleased and encouraged!

And i went to the Monsoon sale and got bargains, saving over £130!! Including top for a fiver cos very small hole that I am about to mend so I can wear it tomorrow. I do love a bargain!! Everything in the sale is now 70% off so worth a trip....

Love the sound of lemony bread & butter pudding but not sure it will assist weight loss! Maybe a weekend treat - after Saturday's weigh in!!

I will try and add drink water to my list though my bladder won't thank me for it - at my age/post 2 children it's a delicate organ!! Always think might as well pour the water straight down the (very clean/swished and swiped!) loo and cut out middle man! But burns off calories going I suppose!

Routines definitely taking hold and making a difference.

Night all - see you tomorrow!

MrsGokWantsatidyhouse · 12/01/2010 23:49

Thanks for the recipe Feetheart . Will have to use that one if I have a dinner party in the distant future, when this house is fit for visitors lol! Can't do it as a normal thing as DC2 is gluten intolerant.

The fitted sheet thing is mad isn't it. One day I may think about learning it, mayby.

MiniMarmite DC3 is 2.7 yo. It was so funny as he put food in his mouth he gave this great big yawn and it fell out again, then his eyes sort of closed and he was chewing on nothing and he had this confused, sleepy look on his face. Then his head started to fall and jerk up again. Then his eyes would open half way and he would try to put more food in his mouth and the whole cycle would start again. Eventually his eyes went and his head slowly dropped to the table, as it hit the table, it woke him and he tried to sit up and then his eyes closed and his head hit the table again and he was gone.

Amelia love the conversation with DH. It is great he noticed though. My DH has been commenting to and doing things to help keep it clean.

MissBennett it is very encouraging htat other people notice as well as you and I am really that you got to the Monsoon sale and sounds like you got some great bargains.

I had (until DH dropped it) a 3ltr glass jug with a top that held a freezer pack to keep it cold. I used to fill it with juice in the morning with the aim of finishing it by bed time. Used to work most times. Will have to find another nice jug.

WhereChaosTheoryRules · 13/01/2010 00:57

Amelia - take a look in depth at my list it looks impressive but equates to work, lots of things want to do, a few bits done. Not so impressive when you look at it closely

SInce i learnt how to fold fitted sheets properally they take less space in the cupboard. not sure if i use the same space as the one in the video and havent time at mo to check.

The snow means that i shall not be ds free this weekend but as he has been a little saint i suspect it could be very pleasant despite needing some me time to clear some more of this paperwork mountain and finish discovering the floor. I have managed to not let it get ay worse then i left it after the last tidying mission on it so that is progress. I might even have cracked the babysteps by the end of the year it takes aaaaaaaaagggggggggggeeeeeeeeeessssssss for me to learn routine if i am the one who says i need to learn it.
In one respect looking forward to being in secondary school (primary are deafening) in another i am not (planning and paperwork). This has been fantastic comparison and there are definetly things to take away. i admire primary teachers now - its the rainy day breaks that i have found a killer. I secondary you get rid of the kids for break even if it is raining.

ANyway need to head to bed. night all.
flicks a duster on the way out and closes the door.

droitwichmummy · 13/01/2010 06:34

Morning everyone

More snow here today - hope the trains are ok for my trip

Babystep is a good one - its a step forward and into the missions is you haven't tried one already

Your mission for today is here. My mission is to get myself to my destination in one piece with the right stuff even though I have no idea what I ought to take

Back tomorrow evening - be good while I'm gone!

feetheart · 13/01/2010 07:09

droitwichmummy - enjoy trip away.

AmeliaJaneAgain - don't stress about other people's lists. It has always impressed me and frightened me rather a lot during past attempts at FLYing. This time I have decided to try it but may have got a little obsessed to start with so am going to try and calm it down Also as WCTR says - just because its listed doesn't mean it gets done!

So today's list:
Morning routine
Make spaghetti bolognese for dinner
Clean bathroom floor
Mission-no vanity so will clean tiles
15 mins declutter in DS's room which is my 'other area' for this week
Dentist's appointment
DS's first swimming lesson

Have good day everyone

missbennett · 13/01/2010 08:24

Snowy morning again! Was supposed to be seeing friend tonight - cancelled from last week due to snow - looks like that may happen again

But would give me more time to complete a mission! Which I think I will adapt to cleaning out bathroom cupboard......

Also to do:

-morning routine - done
-swish and swipe - done
-mission
-continue baby steps
-ironing? Left from yesterday!

Tonight is also first of new routine - DD1 to cook tea once a week! She is 17 so that is fine, and I'm hoping it will rub off on DD2 (14). Am looking forward to mushroom pasta and garlic bread!

Hope you all have a good day. Look forward to catching up later.......

MrsGokWantsatidyhouse · 13/01/2010 08:59

Morning fellow Fat Fairy Friends.

Well it has been snowing since about 11pm last night, hasn't stopped all night DC have a snow dayDH'sschool was open, hegot about 2 miles down the road and has had to turn back, I am waiting for him now. He set out 2 hours ago nearly. The head has just texted to say the school is closed after all [roll eyes], apparantly the snow has just hit them.

Not sure what I will get done today, I'll do things as and when I think

Morning routine partly done as no school, so some things didn't need doing.

Washing on.

Just going to have another crack at making GF bread.

optimisticmumma · 13/01/2010 09:30

More snow here - argh!
It's taken me over an hour to drive a mile to our local station and back. DC phoned to say all the trains were being put back 5 mins every 2 mins! and have now arrived back home very cold and wet. Have made them hot choc so there'll be OK!!
My poor neighbours' DDs though are stuck on a broken down school bus and the road to it is now blocked as well.
However, I am resolved to try to get on today despite teenagers lying around!

Today:
DRINK 2 L OF WATER! (brr!)
Do some serious cooking as I'm not going to get to the shops and the food supplies are running low -eek!
Do home blessing.
ironing
washdrywashdrywashdry ad infinitum!

MissB - good idea about the cooking. It reminds me of last summer holiday where I challenged my 3 to cook a meal each.Well it turned into a competition with my eldest turning out 3 course meals! We had to reassess the idea as we were spending a fortune and putting on weight!! Now they at least understand the concept of 'everyday meals'!

Have a good day all!

Pluto · 13/01/2010 09:53

Arghhh! More snow = more mess and last week of mat leave going too fast.

Done

Ploughed our way through the snow with DS's massive pram to get to school with DS1

Kitchen tidy enough
Property porn on rightmove. If we could afford it...

to do
check today's mission and add it to the list of missions failed. Haven't managed one this week Babysteps may be my limit.
Rethink tonight's dinner in light of not being able to get out to buy mince.
Ironing

I was all set to do a bit of gentle running in 2010 but looks like all my exercise will be on the Wii for a while too. We are currently having a family tournament on Wii Sports Resort and DS1 has bought a couple of little trophies for the eventual winners. Perhaps we should do something on Wii Fit like this too. I think DS would like that. I am rubbish at drinking water at home, and even worse at work. I think that would be a good challenge for me too.

OK, off to check forecast for next couple of days, then tackle that list.

Neenook · 13/01/2010 10:16

Missed yesterday as DHs' birthday and a whirl of baking cakes (batch for DH to take to work and then a 'proper' birthday cake for tea party with DS's in the evening)!

Thanks for 'taking it gently' tips. I was starting to feel a bit phased by the amount everyone seems to get done. It's all a bit '1 step forward - 2 steps back' here. I did have big plans for today, but DC's have a snow day now and I have just been asked to do 2 days supply Thursday and Friday if the schools are open. So either I will have the boys at home or will be out at work. Just never seem to get 'on top' of anything. Sorry for long moany post!!

MrsGokWantsatidyhouse · 13/01/2010 10:24

Well it's been a funny morning so far. Did one lot of GF bread in hte processor to mix it up but it took for ever and seems to be quite dry Couldn't find my bread tins, so the contents of the tupperware cupboard are over the floor at the moment Oh! well it needed sorting out. So put dought in a pyrex dish and put it in the airing cupboard Discovered my old breadmaker has a dough setting, so have bunged another packet in there and will then put that in the oven afterwards. Will be interesting to see what happens But it too much time for a simple job.

Right off to sort the tupperware and wipe everything down as everything is covered in dough

Oh! and hang the washing out

optimisticmumma · 13/01/2010 12:41

Afternoon ladies! How you are having a good day despite weather!

MrsG ,hang the washing out??Are you somewhere hot? Have I missed the fact you live somewhere tropical????

Pluto - don't envy you your Walk to school with pram in tow! Wii fit trophies sound great fun!

Neenook hi and don't worry about what youcan/can't do. Most of us on here like to post lists because it kinds of commits you to doing it iyswim. We also love the chat!!

Quick update here:
Girls stuck on school bus have made it to school (2 hours) and are now v.v.annoyed with their'boring' parents as they sit in classes with 4 others! Neighbours and I about to escape in said neighbours 4x4 to Tesco ! I think they want to avoid the wrath of the teenage DDs! I'm ducking and taking cover!!
my DD has made some cakes after I pointed out that it isn't a day's holiday and she can't be on facebook all day (well I can't Mumsnet then can I?)
DS1 gone AWOL but has promised he'll do some work tonight (in 6th form so has plenty to do!)
Ds2 reading so that counts!!
DH managed to get to London but trains are truly awful today so he may be back earlier than usual.

As far as flying is concerned so far I have:
drunk a litre of water
helped make cakes
'home blessed'(yeuch at that phrase) the house so feel a bit better!
Cleaned out ash from fireplace

Hope to do more this pm but who knows???
