Happy New Year!

This is the place for you if you have made a New Year's Resolution to get on top of the chaos in your home

Here you can do any of the following:

  • repeat or start baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering

Here you can find out what it is all about. Try to ignore the cutesy stuff - cute the regulars on here are not! We also take some of the suggestions with a HUGE dose of salt (look out for wearing tie up shoes in the house)

If you decide to register for the e-mail updates from flylady be warned: unless you choose the daily digest only option you will be innundated with e-mails throughout the day. I will post the links you need each day so you don't need to register on the site to join in.

Dive in and mark your place - we start on January 1st!

thank you for the advice eightieschick. My doctors were fantastic and prcoessed it in half and hour and stayed open an extra few minutes so that i could pick it up. But they class very short notice prescriptions like that emergency prescriptions. I guess the wording makes it seem more serious then it was.

I was hoping to relax in bed for a bit but ds is having a bit of a melt down about not being ablt to write the number 8 so will have to sort that out. He is such a perfectionist and i think he is starting to get competitive about being the best at things at school.

The most flying to be done today will be the laundry. Dont expect miracles.

SparrowFflamau · 09/01/2010 10:18

i may be awol for a while - my marriage is falling apart (thread in relationships)

MrsGokWantsatidyhouse · 09/01/2010 10:22

Morning folks.

Back to it this morning

My list is the same as yesterdays.

Finish the middle worksurface
Do the oppisite one
Keep up with the washing up
Do the washing
Sweep and wash floor

This will also include the declutter mission

MrsGokWantsatidyhouse · 09/01/2010 10:28

Flame, I am sorry to hear that ((((hugs))))

Neenook · 09/01/2010 11:10

Is it O.K for me to join this thread? I'm new to posting (but have been lurking for a while) and I think this might be just what I (and my house and family) need. Usually I lurch from one extreme (sparkly house or total pigsty) to the other and need to find a way to stay on top of things. Do you think this will help? Is it too late to catch up with the rest of you? (Hopes not )

missbennett · 09/01/2010 11:54

Am sure it's OK, neenuck! I am new myself and this is really good stuff! And I think it's all about starting where you are rather than worrying about what you have/haven't been doing! At present I am happily not worrying about the stairs and landing as I know their turn will come, but am very pleased with my much cleaner and tidier kitchen - which I think should be easier to keep on top of, if you see what I mean? Still work in progress - all the cupboards need sorting through - but I can do those on the next round for the kitchen. It all seems more manageable somehow!

Flame so sorry it is all so difficult. Marriage is really hard work and sometimes it just doesn't. Work. Sending you hugs and tea and sympathy as well.

Just back from fat club - lost a pound so very pleased! Baby steps in everything!! Having a coffee then will tackle my list!

WhereChaosTheoryRules · 09/01/2010 12:07

neenook, jump aboard. it is never too late. We are all levesl here from just starting out to getting fab.

Mmmango · 09/01/2010 12:11

Hi All,
Well. Have been away visiting doctors (all routine, no big deal) and am back in the pit home. Am skimming todays' posts, can't possibly go back to WEdnesday to get caught up.

Not sure how to get back into this and I've only been away for a couple of days; I can definitely see why some of you are doing the babysteps over and over

droitwichmummy · 09/01/2010 13:10

Welcome neenook just jump in where we are and all will be well

Welcome back Mmmango the secret is not to try to catch up but just carry on from today

So so sorry sparrow (((((big hugs)))) for you and the DC

Pluto · 09/01/2010 13:33

Thanks for the Dr Hattingh recommendation OM Where is he based? I'm in TW. Isn't MN fantastic! I'm going to put his(?) name in my diary so I remember it when I go for my checkup in June.

Sparrow Take care of yourself.

Today I really do need to mop the hall floor. Snow is never going to end but my despair at the state of the house can be resolved with a bit of a mop and a hoover.

Also to do:

Little bit of ironing
Tidy DS2's room.
Hoover hall, stairs, landings and loft room

Throwing friendly snowballs at you all

Mmmango · 09/01/2010 13:39

Flame - so sorry, hope that things aren't as bad as they seem.

Neenook - hi! congratulations on delurking, I lurked for about a year before posting anything.

Droitwich - I get the theory, but I need to start the control journal, right? (Do we have something less weird to call it, by the way?)

MiniMarmite · 09/01/2010 13:56

Hi All

Just dropping by to say 'hello' and to let you know that I have selected some ironing that I must complete by 3 p.m.! It is only a few things so even I should be able to get that done!

Thinking of you Flamesparrow

and thanks for counting watching stellamel's thread DWM, you're too kind!

WhereChaosTheoryRules · 09/01/2010 13:57

mmmango - my control journal is called the big blue file of all knowing

Flame - i have no words. Just i hope you are ok.

Neenook - ignore the fluffiness and start here babysteps its where to start and it is only a little bit. DOnt worry about it slipping and having to start over. It has happened to most of us. DWM looks after us all and posts the day's baby step and the more advanced stuff. start with the babysteps and only do what you can. the whole principle is a little bit at the time.

I know understand why people with chronic asthma feel so rubbish. the inhaler is fab though and combined with the anti-flu stuff i have been doing some bits.

this is the done list.
moved toy stack and cleaned behind
moved new stack to its home.
Stablished bookshelve and transferred ds' games to it.
2 loads of washing washed, 1 dried.
Altered ds' seat at the table to bigger seat plate and lower down.
Removed ds' bed stop (contingency plan in place incase he falls out tonight -its at my wasit height built is so long way down for little person)
Discussed the new expections wrt chores and pocketmoney (nxt mth pocketmoney increases to 50p/wk but if he hasnt tidied his room saturday morning so i can clean it he will only get the 40p/wk for good behaviour.

optimisticmumma · 09/01/2010 14:25

So sorry flame. Take it easy on yourself..
Oh WCRT I meant for my post to come over as funny - failed again . You certainly didn't upset me at all I was simply mucking around!
Pluto - Saw Dr H in 7oaks but he may do some work in TW too!!
Welcome to newbies....just jump in and join in!!
Love the idea of weightloss babysteps MissB

Waves to everyone else on the thread. I'm off to make more chutney - long story but those in Dec may remember my first attempts!!

MrsDinky · 09/01/2010 15:46

DD's party has been moved from the village hall to our house due to snow . thie time tomorrow I will have twenty or so under 5's running around in a small (Coronation Street type) house. .

optimisticmumma · 09/01/2010 15:51

Mrs D- it will be organised chaos no doubt but everyone will have a fab time and more to the point your DD won't be disappointed! Good luck!

MrsGokWantsatidyhouse · 09/01/2010 15:53

Hi Ladies and gentlefolk,

Middle worktop decluttered and cleaned
All washing done, including a couple of pillows
Floor swept
Fridge/freezer, dryer and butchers block moved around the kitchen.

Still to do:
Other worktop
Wash floor.

Waves to everyone.

StillCounting · 09/01/2010 15:54

Hi all,

Approaching blizzard conditions here ... 4 more inches of snow since the early hrs!! Lovely and powdery underfoot but quite treacherous driving as I found out whilst visiting 6 shops just now in search of a sledge ... but all sold out ... will be taking a tea tray to the park tomorrow!!

Flame so sorry - that's so tough - do take care of yourself x Do drop back in as and when it helps ...

Enjoy your domestic goddess afternoon Optimistic WhereChaos hope asthma under control and well done with getting that long list done

Lobbing one back at you Pluto

Mmango was that a two/three day trip to the drs, you must live in a very exotic, remote part of Thailand? Exciting stuff!!! Just review baby-steps and do those (we are on 9th today) and all will be well ...

Very well done on your weight loss MsBennett!!! That's v. good going after Christmas. My goal is to lose 10kg between now and end June through healthy eating & exercise. [SC lowers voice, looks over shoulder to see if anyone is listening]. Before Christmas, I was mad enough to buy "Body Clutter" by the Fat Fairy herself in which she applies the baby step approach to weight loss. I'm not sure I'd recommend splashing out on it tbh as not a lot of new info. but interesting bits on the correlation between the state of one's home and the state of one's physique! The main message though, as you say, is taking small, realistic, achievable steps EVERY day. No quick fix but 'tis the way ...we can do it!!

A warm welcome to Nenook - not too late at all, as others have said, just look at baby-steps 1-9 and dive right in!! Good luck with it!

MrsGok my list is the same as yesterday's too but I can see you are making progress along your middle-unit counter surface!!

SSC good you can now take a hot bath or shower!!

Feetheart enjoy the science museum

Waves to MiniM (I need several ironing deadlines EVERY day to get me to even approach the basket)

Waves to eightieschick

Hi MummyD (thanks for steps & missions) & Swan (a v. wise strategy indeed!)
Ballet was at 8am this morning thanks to special rehearsal + costume fitting but thankfully returns to its more leisurely 9.30 slot next Sat. Nearly skidded car going around a corner near dance school - very icy when we arrived - and then managed to lose my balance on pavement and drop 4 boxes of 'snake' costumes!!! That, followed by 2 hr struggle with the subjunctive (Fr lesson) + fruitless search for sledge and I was ready for a very, very large bucket of strong coffee this morning!!

Hope you are all having a good day ...

Now must stop procrastinating boring everyone to death and:

Saturday
sort laundry
put washing on
quick clean up kitchen (tis reasonably OK)
finish taking down Christmas decorations and put in roof
wrap two presents
send 2 e-mails

Sunday
more laundry
catch up with baby-steps + control journal
change beds
clean out gps
1 hr tidying/decluttering in master bedroom (at least)
finish dd thank you letters

Try to write much more succinct posts!!!!!

Enjoy your w/e everyone ...

StillCounting · 09/01/2010 15:56

x posts MrsDinky ... can you prepare any simple craft activities to keep them occupied??

MrsGok - racing to catch you up - well done!

optimisticmumma · 09/01/2010 16:19

OOh SC am v. interested in your 'new book' (OM whispers in a conspiritorial voice). Maybe we should have an extra babystep each day regarding the weightloss (shh)

The chutney is brewing up nicely although it does smell a bit vinegary in the house!!
LOL at DH and DD who were out separately and both brought back a 4 pint bottle of milk each!! We now have a milk lake at our house .

Got to go and see what's for tea as we were going out but now can't due to impending blizzard here in Kent!!

ln1981 · 09/01/2010 16:26

HI everyone, hope you are all well. Couldnt get back on last night-dp had a marathon session on 'net and by time he was finished i was half asleep!

sparrow sending tea and sympathy, hope things resolve in the best way possible for you all.

neenook hi. Am pretty new to this too but everyone is so friendly and helpful, and I have really enjoyed myself so far.

Todays its just me and ds2-rest have gone to the football. We would have been too, but ds2 is still getting over the cold and general gunkiness that hes had since NYE so thought it best to keep him in today (and my team are winning 5-0 now-not happy at missing all those goals!!)

It has meant that, today has been quite productive even though i have been going easy.

washing done
dishes done
kids room done by them.
my bedroom dusted and 15min declutter done
declutter in living room done

Just got to shine my sink after tea time is done, and do the mission and baby step. May even do the last cupboard in the kitchen that needs decluttered, but will see how i feel later!

ln1981 · 09/01/2010 16:29

err make that 6 goals!!! Am not amused...

WhereChaosTheoryRules · 09/01/2010 18:37

Ok, so during today's activities I've discovered this thing that is cold and hard and appears to span the whole room (although that is yet to be confirmed) -i think it is called a floor

OM - have generally a serious case of foot in mouth and always worry rather then find the funny side if people hint at being upset.

Done list
Found some floor in the bedroom
Shifted the paper unit into office
Done several more loads of washing (a couple left to do including bedding)

Need to do tonight - discover bed and discover ds' room.
Ironing and folding would be good but will have to see what happens.
Starting to flag but also due another dose of meds so will improve after bedtime i expect.

MrsDinky · 09/01/2010 19:22

SC - yes, was going to do some of that anyway, we have got foam shapes to stick on card and paper, lots of colouring etc. Are going to make it more of an open house than a party (she is 4 so most parents will be staying) hopefully they will all take themselves off and play with stuff round the house. Won't be able to fit them all in one room for games. Am expecting to have to do an awful lot of tidying tomorrow night! Please, please let the schools be open on Monday.

I might add that if this had happened 6 months ago I would have been having a massive heart attack about getting the house ready, whereas, thanks to all the Flying I am not that bothered and know it will be OK.

Better go, cake to make.

ps, have identified suitable storage space for a slow cooker, now just need to see if I have enough Nectar points to buy one from Argos.

PositiveAttitude · 09/01/2010 20:46

MrsD - WOW a convert!! I have a curry in mine tonight, already fed 4 on 3 different sittings, DH will eat within the next hour.

Absolutely no flying today!

Trudged into town through the snow to get emergency supplies this morning and ended up doing first aid and calling an ambulance for a lady who had fallen on ice. Poor lady had a few broken bones and was unconscious by the time the ambulance got through the traffic. Hope she was ok.

Not sure what happened this afternoon, but just could not get warm at all and slept for an hour, then felt fine. Hoping its not the start of a lurgy!

Just had an hour of Wii-ing with the family, so no housework at all today! Oh, just thought this could be my family time as prescibed by our fat fairy friend.

Anybody else got any slow cooker recipes? I am up for trying anything.

DWMummy - Yes, I love cooking and DS (13) has wanted to be a chef since he has been able to speak! So lots of cooking in this house. Trouble is we end up eating it all!!
