Happy New Year!

This is the place for you if you have made a New Year's Resolution to get on top of the chaos in your home

Here you can do any of the following:

  • repeat or start baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering

Here you can find out what it is all about. Try to ignore the cutesy stuff - cute the regulars on here are not! We also take some of the suggestions with a HUGE dose of salt (look out for wearing tie up shoes in the house)

If you decide to register for the e-mail updates from flylady be warned: unless you choose the daily digest only option you will be innundated with e-mails throughout the day. I will post the links you need each day so you don't need to register on the site to join in.

Dive in and mark your place - we start on January 1st!

Morning folks

Well schools are all closed here including DH's. So we are having a leisurly breakfast before everyone gets washed and dressed and out into it.

DM I didn't just blind luck, that and the fact that untill my kitchen looks at least a little it habitable I can't order my new fridge/freezer .

Two things I forgot yesterday on my end list finished DC2&3 bedroom
took down Christmas tree (the only Christmas thing we managed to get up this year due to mess everywhere.)

Do you know what, I always feel I do ugger all all day and having it listed in black and white just shows I am doing quite well

The boys are keeping their room tidy as well, though it has only been a couple of days and all that could change.

Today I will concentrate on the kitchen as much as I can. DH and DC are getting dressed to go out in the snow. When they come in later I will see if I can persude DH and DC1 to carry on with his bedroom.

DC3 is right and breezy and full of bounce this morning. Caught using the bookcases as a climbing wall this morning [roll eyes]

Snowing properly in West Kent now but DS1's school is open at least until midday.

This gives me a chance to:

Do the ironing
load w/m
fiddle around and consider doing some planning for return to work
Tidy loft room
Sort out supper for this evening

and take some photos of DS2 in the snow - despite 3 big snow falls in Kent since he was born last Feb we still don't have any snowbaby pics!

missbennett · 06/01/2010 09:35

Good morning! Tis a snowy day here now - DD1 had set off to school but got there and was told they were closing - so now I have her and 2 friends sitting drinking hot chocolate, discussing the relative merits of 6th form boys and considering going to the park!

Yesterday I did really well! I did the tops of the kitchen cupboards (wiped over!), the cupboard doors and the top of the fridge! So on one level it's looking quite good! DD2 cooked tea and the sink was clear before bedtime!

I cleaned the fridge out before Christmas so will concentrate on dealing with a hot spot today. It will be OK, I have several to choose from!

Oh, and I did some ironing whilst it was a small pile!

Now need to try and get to town to collect my car (only small job in the end so not very expensive but will need new clutch very soon which will be expensive.

It is amazing really - even just doing these little jobs I am beginning to feel more in control and a bit more relaxed. AM trying the idea I saw on the link for working flybabies - filling washing up bowl first thing, DDs put breakfast pots in there and then is very quick job to wash up and leave kitchen clear.

Must do some washing today as well.....

Right, must attempt to get car. DD1 and friends off to buy cake and I think DD2 off with friends.....and I feel less awful about having friends here as it is a BIT tidier than usual!

Sorry this is so long. Hope all those with ill and injuried children are coping and all making a good recovery. It is scary when they hurt themselves but small children do seem to recover quickly leaving you exhausted - so make sure you all look after yourselves as well!

SparrowFflamau · 06/01/2010 09:36

Well my fridge is now depressingly bare...

missbennett · 06/01/2010 09:36

I'm really soory I managed to post that twice - I'll get better at this.....

clemette · 06/01/2010 09:45

Dropped DD off at school - cue hysterical screaming. I don't think yesterday was enough to convince her it is a fun place to be. Last year I was a teacher and praying for snow days, this year I was desperate for the school not to close so at least she can start getting used to it.

So today:
Dry washing
Prepare casserole for slow cooking.
Ironing
Mission (is it clean out fridge?)
Write two essays (eek)
Learn all about the heart (from a medical perspective rather than an emotional one)
Post parcel to America.
Shine sink

Hope everyone has a productive day, despite the weather!

whyme2 · 06/01/2010 10:09

HAve been following everyone - just been lazy about posting.
Good morning - we are snowed in here so no school and dh is lounging on the settee making the place look untidy.
But I have been busy this week.
Did my decorations and tree and found homes for lots of the new toys (but not all yet).
I did my fridge yesterday as dh went shopping so today I am concentrating on decluttering.

Will check inlater.

Bobbybee · 06/01/2010 10:17

Ds1's school was open today so I had to get up and do the school run. It was really nice to get out that early and everywhere looks so pretty. I did struggle with the buggy though!

I was really tired yesterday as ds2 had been up since 2am and I had work. I came home, sorted out dinner and then just left everything. I now have a really smelly, dirty kitchen to deal with. Nice.

Here's what I need to do today;

Clean kitchen
unload and load dw
laundry
put away clean clothes
tidy bedrooms
clean bathroom
hoover this eve as floors are ok at the mo
cook dinner

StillCounting · 06/01/2010 10:50

Much better, thank you DroitwichMummy (arrested development emoticon)

Enjoy the snow everyone ...

droitwichmummy · 06/01/2010 10:58

Sparrow are you ok? Could your friend come to you if your need is for company rather than to get out of the house?

Don't worry about the decs, they can wait. If you need to get out of the house just wrap yourself and DD up and go - even if you just walk round the block it will help.

See if you can get some rest when (if!) DD has a nap and take of yourself

mrsgrumpygruffalo · 06/01/2010 11:03

Morning all,

achieved very little yesterday due to the snow, had to go and pick the kids up at dinnertime and by the time I'd trudged there and back I needed a sit down and a cuppa and then just couldn't get motivated

Kids off school again today and DH is off work so will try and get something done today and rope DH into helping.

to do today;
try and catch up with the posts from yesterday!
Ring vet and cancel appt for this afternoon
Shine sink
Change kids bedding
Hoover lounge & kitchen

DM will have to look up the exercise info, did manage my 15 mins on the Wii fit, also laughed myself silly watching DH trying to do snowboarding he was putting so much effort into it he fell off the board!

Big wave to everyone and have a good day

SparrowFflamau · 06/01/2010 11:19

I'm ok

We finally have snow. I'm hating seeing DD2 like this - she has little pink eyes, such a sore nose, and a cough. It is "just" a cold, so nothing a dr could do, but I feel so helpless.

The friend visiting side of things was that particular friend rather than just company iyswim. I don't get to see her very often, so when we have plans and then they fall through its horrible.

Decorations are down I might do another 2 min fly spot bit in a while, but I am on top of the various tasks atm (the ones I am acknowledging anyway).

MrsGokWantsatidyhouse · 06/01/2010 11:29

An un Mumsnetty (((hug)) for Flame.

The snow is still falling steadily. The boys and DH have built a 6ft snowman and are loving running in and out of the house to get warm and doing my head in as I can't get on with what I am doing for taking coats, hats, gloves and wellies off and on the radiators and then put putting them on again.

I load of washing hung up and the next on. I have now caught up on myself and can now start to think about doing bedding and towels. Have worked out if I do 2 washes a day I can keep on top of it, do the bedding and towels once a week and have one day off from it.

I've picked up all the rubbish and detritus from the kitchen floor and sorted out the overflowing bin. Need to wash it out before I put another bin bag in it.

Mmmango · 06/01/2010 12:21

Oh lololol at the page for women with babies - someone's dh has stopped asking where his clothes are since she labelled his drawers! Brilliant!

Have had unexpected company all day, so getting nowhere with the big list. Morning routine done though, plus the mission. Fridge still looks pretty bad, tbh, but it's a start.

My hot spots appear to have taken over the whole house. That's why I'm here. If I can track one back to where it started I'll do 2 minutes on it...

Hope all children are doing better and you're all enjoying the snow

ln1981 · 06/01/2010 12:26

MrsGok glad your lo is ok now.

sparrow its awful when they 'just' have a cold, they always look so miserable dont they? ds2 has a cold from about the end of november right through until about march-i should get a loyalty discount on tissues!

Well today was weekly big shop day- oh the joys , only consolation was that it was quite quiet probably because of the snow so it was actually a quick trip today.

Other things on list today

washing done and on airer done.
breakfast dishes done and put away done
put away ironing done
15min declutter
todays mission which i wish had known before i went to the shops!! oh well...
sort kids stuff out for school and (hopefully) nursery.
shine sink.

will check in later tonight. have a nice afternoon.

tibni · 06/01/2010 13:46

Hi all,

Just a quick post as im in a motivated mood.

Dc went back to school yesterday and I decided to address one of my biggest hotspots - the office. If I say it had writing on the wall from approx 4 yrs ago (didn't remove it initially as I was so proud as ds was never expected to be able to write ) This room is used as a dumping ground and getting in was increasingly problematic with all the junk. So yesterday I emptied it - sugar soaped it and painted it (including ceiling and woodwork) with the help of dh - he knows its best just to go along with me when I have my mind made up!

It looks so much better. I have thrown lots away and am making sure that only things that should be in there are put back in.

Today I have also managed to deep clean the sitting room including the leather sofas. Promised a mate I will pop for coffee this afternoon so an hour off!

I should have been working today but got a call not to go in due to snow - I have to go through miles of forest to get to work so not the best in the snow. I am only on casual contract so as long as the work is done by Monday I can be flexible.

So wave to all and I will try and catch up proper later x

StillCounting · 06/01/2010 13:59

Hi everyone,

Just taking a quick break from sorting out my (paid) work hotspots ... quiet here because of the snow and because of Ephinany holidays (large Spanish population in Bxls)

Well I learnt my lesson today. Belgian schools are not open on Wednesday afternoons and so that's when everyone does extra-curricular activities. Was feeling smug because laundry is (unusally) up-to-date so all ballet kit ready to go, but neglected to check dd's ballet bag after holidays and 20 mins before start of lesson (10-15 min tram journey away) her ballet shoes were nowhere to be found. Not in her wardrobe, not in her bedroom ... not in the dressing up box ...then I had a vague recollection of her dancing around the office in a fairy costume during the holidays while I was there doing some shredding ...so I had to sprint there and I had to dodge in and out of everyone's office trying to be discreet while scrabbling in a deranged manner behind bookcases and in cupboards and then sprint back and we were so late it was embarrassing. Bad Mummy marks all round.

FlameSparrow oh poor you and your poor dd, it's so hard when they have a cold at that age because their nasal passages are so tiny ...is there anyone around who could cover for you for a couple of hours while you get some sleep? It's so tough when you are constantly sleep-deprived. Well done with the decorations, I've got to add those to my list tonight.

This thread is moving so fast I'm afraid I still haven't quite got to grips with who everyone is but waving at everybody!!

swanriver · 06/01/2010 14:18

You all sound as if you working amazingly hard.
In the meantime I have totally regressed, kitchen is a slovenly muddle, I am still wearing last night's clothes under my daywear - keeping warm definitely - and decs are still up.

Off to take them down now, whilst trying to keep ds1 at his work [he keeps trying to skive off and read the Beano]

on the plus side I went for a long snowy walk this morning and ds has a friend to play now (who Is reading the Beano
and lunch was delicious!

kitchen list TO DO
put washed pots away
put lid on bin again
find some recycling and put in one place
put dry groceries away from yest
wash up lunch
shower and re-dress

SparrowFflamau · 06/01/2010 14:26

school closed just as i laid down for a nap

swanriver · 06/01/2010 15:02

Oh Sparrowflame [curses] - what a nightmare - hope you can cuddle up with dcs after pickup and have a rest then - hopefully closed tomorrow so you won't have to go out.

Still haven't done decs, but was trying to keep ds1 reading edoocational lit, now given up and he's watching Dr Who with his friend after answering three important questions on King Arthur satisfactorily.

Now a 15min attempt at decs - all small unbrekable objects..

swanriver · 06/01/2010 15:16

Put away two boxes of decs
still more to do though and tree to go outside

MrsGokWantsatidyhouse · 06/01/2010 15:30

Flame, that was just sods law, wasn't it? Really feel for you.

Not done much today as DC3 fell asleep in my arms after lunch. So was sat being able to do bugger all, but it was lovely.

Just taken the fridge apart and cleaned it, my goodness it was filthly Took me an hour to get it clean.

DH tried to fix the dishwasher but it is definatly kaput, so a new one will have to be ordered.

Having a cuddle with DC2 at the moment and watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, how riviting.

optimisticmumma · 06/01/2010 16:33

Flame big hug from me too. We're very unmumsnetty on this thread! Pink and fluffy only!!!!
That's better DWMummy [arrested dev emoticon here too]

Well, what a day!
School was abandoned at about 7.30 this morning when my DC decided they weren't hanging about any longer for a train! Good job too as it has been snowing al day!
DS2 managed to block the sim on his mobile so we had to walk up to our nearest town to get it replaced. He then disappeared with friends to sledge and I haven't seen him since! Meanwhile DS1 plus 4 friends have made or should I say constructed a three storey, ten foot high snowman on the local cricket pitch - the groundsman will be pleased!
Pluto - I am also in West Kent - how exciting!!!!
DD has used the day to catch up on coursework and is now looking particularly hangdog!

As far as flying is concerned I don't feel I have done a thing so am going to list it to see...

washing - one lot on
Christmas tree and decs down
Needles swept up
Hoover unblocked (needles)
dishwasher on
beds made
Sand s
supper - baked pots etc
15min rescue of my bedroom

Oh well perhaps I've donemore than I think.

Look after yourselves all and no more trips to casualty or bumped heads. Get those cotton wool wraps out fgs.

BlackYellowRed · 06/01/2010 17:46

FlameSparrow I remember you from years ago. I didn't know you had another baby! Sorry to hear she's not well.

stillcounting I used to love Wednesday afternoon as a child. Used to go play with my friends. DH doesn't get how working parents cope with the kids' one half day midweek.

Oh my FLYing has gone a bit downhill. Having the kids home because of school closing hasn't helped. I wonder if the bins will be emptied tomorrow. Need to get rid of this recycling in my hall. Gosh, two big black bags full of it.
