Coin down the toilet

nottheplan · 13/05/2025 11:57

My 3 yo ds put a coin down the toilet. It has been there a few days now. We can't retrieve it as it is quite far back & under. I've been putting bleach in every day to see if that would help but it just looks like a permanent poo stain. Has anyone got any remedies? Has it happened to anyone else?! Please say it has 🙈

If you're buying some, don't get branded Coke - cheap own brand cola will do the trick just as well.

I don't think it matters if it's sugary or not, it's the acidity of coke which makes it work. So you could also try a bottle of vinegar.

Apart from growing some balls, sticking your hand in the toilet (which will be clean now as it’s been bleached to shit!) and getting it back

OP has said she's used her hands.

BobbyBiscuits · 13/05/2025 13:48

There is no other way to get an object like that out of a toilet without using a gloved hand.

Nobody is being a 'smartass'. That's literally the solution to your issue.

A coin doesn't have 'dye' on it and bleach doesn't move metal objects.

HundredPercentUnsure · 13/05/2025 13:49

Or try a dentures tablet.

Fizzy action might dislodge it?

lcakethereforeIam · 13/05/2025 13:50

How's it going OP? Any change?

BertieBotts · 13/05/2025 13:50

Is there definitely still a coin and you aren't just seeing a round stain?

You might need to wedge a knife under the edge of it and prise it off or something.

What's this coin made of that means its glued itself to ceramic under water?!

I know, op should be taking out a patent. 😂

I've tried fishing it out with the toilet brush but it seems to be stuck. The reason I put bleach in is because I thought it would take the brown stain away. But obviously the dye keeps coming off.

Dye? What coins are dyed? It's dirt OP!
Anyway stuff your hand down and pick it out ffs.

AllWhitNoWhoo · 13/05/2025 13:52

Shame it's not a £2 coin. I'd come get it out haha.
What flavour full fat coke are you using, op? I hear vanilla is good.

MargoLivebetter · 13/05/2025 13:53

Get an old fashioned wire coat hanger and unravel it. Use it to poke the coin until it comes loose and then fish it out with your hand. The bleach will have caused the copper coating on the 2p coin to corrode and it has adhered to the bowl. Hopefully a few swift pokes with the hanger will dislodge it.

TranceNation · 13/05/2025 13:54

Well if it is stuck, least if you have boys they will something to aim at.

Jokes aside, I would empty the u-bend of all the water by pushing the water down the u-bend with the toilet brush. Might make it easier to understand how it's stuck.

This thread is worthless without pics🤔

We need a diagram! 😂

@nottheplan
The Coke option is a good plan - it has a chemical reaction with the tarnishing off copper coins

You can give Coke Zero a try as you already have plenty, but failing that a proper full fat coke will cause a reaction - cheap sugary brands should also work to get a reaction

Whacking it with a pokey thing will help, but as has been noted try to avoid metal etc to a avoid damaging the toilet itself

In theory you don’t need to turn any water off, just don’t flush
For a better reaction try to get rid of the water that is in the u-bend to ensure that you are soaking the coin in neat coke ——- BUT in doing so you unleash the air from the drain, so mask up, keep the door shut etc
Potentially shove an old tea towel etc in to block off the smell - but don’t let that get stuck as well

If you have a big enough bottle of coke then you can shift the u-bends water and fill the bend with coke to maintain an air block

UrsulasHerbBag · 13/05/2025 13:55

If it’s stuck and can’t be dislodge by hand would a plunger help release the pressure holding it down? In my head I know what I mean.

No joke, I will need to go to the shop as all I have is 30 cans of coke zero - no full fat coke!

Edited

They're laughing because there is no fat in coke. Any coke. It's sugar.

This ^

Use a knife or a screwdriver to try to get under the bottom edge of the coin and lever it off the porcelain surface - without cracking the porcelain.

And if it's not obvious.... clean the knife and/or screwdriver afterwards... 😂

(I can't believe this has been so difficult... )

Anything acidic will work, vinegar will be fine if you have it, no need to spend a penny!

loobyloo1979 · 13/05/2025 13:57

Your mistake was using bleach. Should have used coke

MargoLivebetter · 13/05/2025 13:58

What are posters hoping the acid is going to do? Most acids don't usually react with copper, so I don't know how that will help breakdown the corrosion that has glued the coin to the bowl.

Whoooosh!!!!

Are you not familiar with the phrase "full fat coke"? 😂

TouchOfSilverShampoo · 13/05/2025 14:04

Am I being thick in not understanding HOW it is stuck? Did it glue itself.

Todayisaday · 13/05/2025 14:04

This toilet is not a toilet anymore this is your personal wishing well.
Flick a coin in and make a wish. When guests come over you can invite them to make a wish too. You could wish that your toilet returns to be a toilet and the penny is back in the money box. But then you will have no further wishes.

Keeptoiletssafe · 13/05/2025 14:05

It’s the acid in the coke that does the work. So get as much water out beforehand because otherwise you are just diluting the acid.
I would just use a bit of vinegar to be honest. Wouldn’t waste the coke!

EveryOtherNameTaken · 13/05/2025 14:12

Just put you hand down with a t spoon and shove it off then pick it up.

nottheplan · 13/05/2025 14:13

Thanks for all the helpful comments! I'm waiting to see if the cola will do the trick 🤞
