Are you needing some guidance with routines and keeping up on housework? This is the thread for you!

This is a long running thread, but we are a friendly bunch and all are welcome to join in.

Do NOT sign up for the Flylady emails - it's an excessive amount sent every day.
There are Baby Steps for starting out, add one thing at a time to start good habits and routines.
There are 5 zones that we will rotate through, don't worry about finishing it all this month, it'll come around again next month! Flylady is NOT about perfectionism!
Daily missions: each day of the week has a different mission.

  • Monday: Home Blessing (or as we call it, home bleugh)
  • Tuesday: plan & play
  • Wednesday: anti-procrastination
  • Thursday: errand day
  • Friday: clean car & purse out a week. It's also date night (with your significant other, or friends, or yourself!)
  • Saturday: family fun day
  • Sunday: renew your spirit

Common acronyms we use:

  • LOL: load of laundry (washing is certainly NOT funny!)
  • DW: dishwasher, we are not rotating wives by any means, although an extra pair of hands could come in handy sometimes 😆
  • LMS: lose/lost my shit
  • DNLMS: did not lose my shit

There are more, feel free to ask us to explain something. I'll try to update links every day, although if you can, it's worth downloading the app, you can even have it send you notifications (although I only have it for when the zones change). You can also modify the tick lists to suit your home & lifestyle.

Links are below 👇 if I happen to not add links in time, they do update at midnight for you.

Ditzy I agree with having decorative items, just not little nick-nacks as it does look cluttered and hard to clean, in my house anyway. I'm glad to hear you actually have sun though, best to take advantage of it when it shows up!

I have a long list of to dos:

[ ] Bleach bathrooms
[ ] Water plants - outside
[ ] Vacuum (mainly hard floors so I can mop)
[ ] Mop
[ ] Rotate DW
[ ] Handwash dishes
[ ] Wash our sheets (master bedroom)
[ ] Wash spare bed sheets (at least strip the bed)
[ 🧚‍♀️ ] Wash DSs sheets
[ ] Put clean clothes away
[ ] Video chat with Mum
[ ] Clear out fridge
[ ] Dust
[ ] Self tanner (shower, scrub, shave etc.)
[ 🧚‍♀️ ] Meal planning
[ 🧚‍♀️ ] Grocery list
[ ] Grocery shopping/ pickup
[ ] Cook dinner
[ ] Paint nails
[ ] Clean mirrors
[ ] Sweep camper
[ ] Mop camper
[ ] Clean the bathroom in camper
[ ] General tidy in each room - start in one corner then make my way around the room

I already have a few things done (or going - washer), they are marked with 🧚‍♀️
I do have a lot of things needing to be put away around the house (although mainly in the main living area, including kitchen).

Everyone else is still sleeping, so I'm enjoying the peace & quiet while drinking my 2nd cup of coffee!

Up really early today. Dug into the pile of random bits of paper, scribbled notes to self, all intermixed with much more important stuff. Put more papers in office, and others set aside for shredding/burning. Some old magazines dealt with.

Five minutes before leaving for the school drop-off, TeenBoy announced that he needed a packed lunch for a local trip! We got that done just in the nick of time.

Beautiful sunshine after dropoff, and I went to the petrol station to find it’s all pay at pump now. I was delighted to find the instructions were very clear, and I followed it all without any mishap.

Beautiful weather, decided to go for a drive, got to destination to find that TeenGirl had sent me a text five minutes earlier, saying she didn’t feel well and could she come home. So my trip consisted of a twenty mile drive for a tour of a carpark then straight back to the school to pick her up.

We made a list of symptoms for the next time she has a clinic appt.

So, stuff got done even though life got in the way of plans.

CabbageBearGoat · 19/06/2024 16:41

Had a massive burst of errand/admin energy today, so I seized it with both hands.

Today's wins:

  • Returned Sodastream canister at Argos
  • Took Amazon return to post office
  • Bought new rear wiper blade and fitted
  • Morning routine!
  • Car test drive
  • Much personal financial admin/phonecalls!
  • Work emails and finance admin

And later on I'm planning to dust down the left bedside table in accordance with today's FlyLady. Today has gone by in a total flash so I'm horrified it's fully the afternoon now.

@Scourgify sounds like you have similar paper piles to me - random stuff mixed with important stuff! A pain but very satisfying to resolve once you get to it

HazelNotHungryLC · 19/06/2024 19:18

Scourgify that's unfortunate that you didn't get to do what you planned and got to enjoy the sunshine. I hope you have another opportunity soon. I hope DD is on the mend soon.

Cabbage it must be the day for admin all around, I did some sorting of paperwork today too!

That is one hell of a list Hazel, hope you didn't have to complete it all today

Hope DD is feeling better soon Scourgify, pity it was bad timing with your trip out. I have all those mixed up paperwork too

How was the test drive Cabbage, are you going to buy it?

Ta-da's

🏜️ Haven't slept so well this past week so took the opportunity for a lie-in while I could
🏜️ Morning routine
🏜️ Rummaged through cupboards for about an hour trying to find a top to match with my bottoms. How can basic charcoal skinny jeans be so hard to style? Maybe there's something wrong with my tops. I'm trying to declutter so I'll give some thought to getting rid of all the ones that were no good today
🏜️ Decluttered a plant that I accidentally killed. Think I over watered it
🏜️ Studying
🏜️ Went to church with a friend
🏜️ Experimented with a new fish dinner, turned out lovely
🏜️ Exercise
🏜️ Evening routine

HazelNotHungryLC · 20/06/2024 04:15

Cabbage ideally I would have got it all done today as I didn't have to work. There were some things on there that did not get done in the end.
I had a similar problem with the black jeans I pulled out yesterday. I ended up switching to blue jeans! I would have worn a couple tops I had, but it was too chilly yesterday. When I wear my grey skinny jeans I usually match it with white, black, navy blue or rose pink, but they aren't dark grey.

Ta das (not all of the to do list got done):
🧚‍♀️ Bleach bathrooms
🧚‍♀️ Water plants - outside
🧚‍♀️ Rotate DW (DS did this for me)
🧚‍♀️ Handwash dishes
🧚‍♀️ Wash our sheets (master bedroom)
🧚‍♀️ Wash mattress protectors (with the rest of the whites)
🧚‍♀️ Stripped the sheets off the spare bedroom
🧚‍♀️ Wash DSs sheets
🧚‍♀️ Put clean clothes away
🧚‍♀️ Video chat with Mum
🧚‍♀️ Clear out fridge
🧚‍♀️ Self tanner (shower, scrub, shave etc.)
🧚‍♀️ Meal planning
🧚‍♀️ Grocery list
🧚‍♀️ Grocery shopping
🧚‍♀️ Cook dinner
🧚‍♀️ Clean mirrors & glass doors
🧚‍♀️ Sweep camper
🧚‍♀️ Mop camper
🧚‍♀️ Clean the bathroom in camper
🧚‍♀️ sorted paperwork and filed it
🧚‍♀️ 3 more LOLs, including 2 loads of blankets and pillow cases from the camper

I was actually going to clean my bedside tables as well, but it's almost bedtime now. I have to work the next 2 days so my ta da lists will be short (if there's anything on there at all!).

OP posts:
HazelNotHungryLC · 20/06/2024 04:23

Thursday is errand day.
Thursday's mission is to work on the right side of the bed. Put things away where they belong. Do not dump anything where you have already cleared this week. Use your timer of you need to, take breaks, only do a few minutes and be done, whatever works for you to make progress.

Baby Step: https://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/31-beginner-babysteps/day-20/
Add doing laundry into your daily routine. A load a day keeps Mount Washmore away, as flylady says. This is one of DSs chores when we are at work. That way on Tuesdays & the weekend I can just focus on the extra loads that need doing, like sheets, towels and blankets etc. Every little bit helps!

Today is going to be bedside table day. I'm going to bring in a timer, grab the duster and cloth, blast disco music and get this done. I did a round of washing up last night before bed and it felt good to be back in the kitchen. Cleaned out he coffee machine and emptied the bins ready for collection this morning and everything. Hoping today is another good one for the goal list!

@ItsieDitzyBitsOfOnionInTheSoup yup, or at least that model. It's the first time I've bought a car rather than inherited/bought one from family so it's really nerve-wracking! Similar level to house buying in the "how am I the adult here?!" type of feeling 🤣

@HazelNotHungryLC that's an impressive done list! Hurrah for the paperwork too 🎉

HazelNotHungryLC · 21/06/2024 04:38

Cabbage buying a car can be stressful, but exciting at the same time!
Were you able to get your to dos done?

I don't have any ta das, other than getting the camper ready to go camping this weekend.
I had yet another incident this evening of seeing things. I'm borrowing a key from someone at work, could have sworn I saw a gold key on the Keychain, along with a fob. I go to show DH (as it's something we both need access to), and the gold key was gone!
I messaged the guy I'm borrowing it from, freaking out, about to head back over to work to see if I can find this key, for him to respond that is just the fob, there was no key!
I'm losing my mind! But really I think it's not enough sleep. I'm not setting any alarms this weekend while camping. Hopefully that'll help.

OP posts:
HazelNotHungryLC · 21/06/2024 04:42

Friday is clean your car & purse day.
Friday night is date night.

Friday's mission is to clear the end of your bed. Just like the rest of the week, put things away where they belong, do not fill spaces that you cleared earlier in the week (unless they actually belong there).

Baby Step: https://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/31-beginner-babysteps/day-21/
Keep doing the baby steps we've done so far. She does want you to email her any questions you have, but I've never done that. If I have any questions I ask them here!

Right, I'm off to take a shower & go to bed. I really need my sleep tonight! 😴

@HazelNotHungryLC my to do list escaped me - bedside tables still not done and neither my chest of drawers! But I did a lot of car buying admin and enjoyed the football instead 😁

Today's clean out the car errand fits in nicely with the plan to get the current car exchange-ready. I'm trying to not get to upset about it all as I know it's the right decision but I find it very difficult letting go of things I've had for a while. Trying to focus on knowing it's better to trade in a car while it's still decent, than to wait for it to totally fall apart and force the issue AND not get anything back in a part exchange. Supposedly less stressful this way. I read an analogy years ago about choosing to leave a party while the party is still good than to stay to the bitter end cleaning up and locking up when it's all quiet and sad. That's become something of a motto - leave once you can see it's ending but you can take good memories with you.

So today's plan:

  • bedside tables clean
  • car vacuum and emptying
  • post eBay sales
  • fit utility counter top
HazelNotHungryLC · 21/06/2024 19:27

Cabbage I like that analogy, however, when it's literally a party I'm usually the one throwing it so can't leave before it's over 😆
Even without the zone work it sounds like you had a productive day.

Ta-da's:

🥂 Morning routine
🥂 Organised handbags
🥂 Put yet another baby spider outside that was for some inexplicable reason in my hair and dangled itself down in front of my face on its web. Seems to be an ongoing theme this summer, I get at least two a week
🥂 Decluttered
🥂 Exercise
🥂 Gardening, weeding and deadheading
🥂 Went to the pub this evening to see a live band, was ok, nice to get out
🥂 Evening routine

HazelNotHungryLC · 22/06/2024 02:17

Ditzy how interesting about the baby spiders! Of course your name reminds me of itsy bitsy spider, so maybe that's why?!

I'm heading up the mountains to go camping so won't have signal over the weekend. We will be back in town on Monday, I have a long weekend, which is much needed.

Saturday is family fun day.
Baby Step: https://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/31-beginner-babysteps/day-22/
Learn to build your own control journal (hint, it doesn't have to be perfect)

Sunday is renew your spirit day.
Baby Step: https://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/31-beginner-babysteps/day-23/
Add afternoon routine to your control journal. This can also be called after school or work routine.

There are no missions on the weekend, just baby steps!
Have fun this weekend, I know I will, and I plan on catching up on some much needed sleep!

Ooops, fell off the thread again, last week was a busy one. On Friday I got a huge list of errands and anti-procrastinations done as well as meeting friends which was nice. Yesterday was a day out in London, today we went to a local even and bumped into various friends and acquaintances, been doing quite a bit of gardening in between it all.

There are some very good lists on this thread, well done everyone!

@Scourgify I can totally identify with papers hiding in plain sight. “Filing” seems to be permanently present on my To Do list.

CabbageBearGoat · 23/06/2024 21:24

Garden day today. Wins:

  • Emptied 4x pots of spring bulbs for drying
  • Replanted pots with herbs (rosemary, chive, thyme, Moroccan mint)
  • Planted 2x tomato bags with tomatoes (cherry tomatoes, plum tomatoes)
  • Planted 3rd tomato bag with butternut squash
  • Potted on 2x peppers
  • Weeded brick driveway pavers
  • Swept side patio

With a special mention to my mum for starting off the veggies from seed for us. Usually I'd do them but this year has been manic + pregnancy! There are more bulb pots to empty and herbs to fill them - tasks for another day. Really happy to have spent so much time outside.

SingToTheSky · 23/06/2024 21:49

Can definitely relate to the hiding in plain sight too!

Keep going everyone. My weekend hasn’t been nearly as productive as Friday but I did manage laundry and kitchen stuff. Also made a huge batch of sausage stew today in the slow cooker, waiting for it to cool down to freeze it!

HazelNotHungryLC · 24/06/2024 19:45

Looks like a few busy days have happened while I was away!

We are moving to zone 5 this week, the living room. It's actually really nice to have a full week in this zone as it doesn't always happen that way.

Monday's mission is to go sofa diving. Remove cushions (if you can) and fish out whatever doesn't belong. Grab your vacuum and suck up all the crumbs that tend to end up in the crevices.

Monday is home bleugh day.

Baby Step: https://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/31-beginner-babysteps/day-24/
Swish & Swipe (S&S). Wipe the sink and toilet every morning as part of your morning routine so it's ready for guests all the time.

We had a good few days away, no phone service either which is always nice.
We are on our way back home, but I've already had to make a phone call about having someone look at the heating & cooling system in the camper as the fuse keeps blowing 🙄

I'm looking forward to a shower, although will need to bathe the dogs and do a tonne of laundry as well.

🎺 volunteered at band bootcamp for 2 hours
🎺 put away random stuff that had gathered in the living room
🎺 dusted living room
🎺 meeting with restoration company
🎺 delivered more ice creams
🎺 LOLs x6
🎺 took Jeep over to have wheels rotated & balanced
🎺 put away mountain of clean clothes
🎺 changed DSs sheets
🎺 had to hound DS to put his clothes away. He ended up giving me a few bags worth that can be donated (now I don't know what he'll wear!)
🎺 got my clothes ready for tomorrow
🎺 made my lunches for the rest of the week
🎺 cleaned both bathrooms
🎺 swept carport
🎺 had DS rotate DW
🎺 vacuumed main floor
🎺 mopped hard floor

There's still a lot of laundry left, I think I counted 4 more full loads, not including the partial load that we'll add to with what we all wore today. That'll catch me up from camping at the weekend!
