Are you needing some guidance with routines and keeping up on housework? This is the thread for you!

This is a long running thread, but we are a friendly bunch and all are welcome to join in.

Do NOT sign up for the Flylady emails - it's an excessive amount sent every day.
There are Baby Steps for starting out, add one thing at a time to start good habits and routines.
There are 5 zones that we will rotate through, don't worry about finishing it all this month, it'll come around again next month! Flylady is NOT about perfectionism!
Daily missions: each day of the week has a different mission.

  • Monday: Home Blessing (or as we call it, home bleugh)
  • Tuesday: plan & play
  • Wednesday: anti-procrastination
  • Thursday: errand day
  • Friday: clean car & purse out a week. It's also date night (with your significant other, or friends, or yourself!)
  • Saturday: family fun day
  • Sunday: renew your spirit

Common acronyms we use:

  • LOL: load of laundry (washing is certainly NOT funny!)
  • DW: dishwasher, we are not rotating wives by any means, although an extra pair of hands could come in handy sometimes 😆
  • LMS: lose/lost my shit
  • DNLMS: did not lose my shit

There are more, feel free to ask us to explain something. I'll try to update links every day, although if you can, it's worth downloading the app, you can even have it send you notifications (although I only have it for when the zones change). You can also modify the tick lists to suit your home & lifestyle.

Links are below 👇 if I happen to not add links in time, they do update at midnight for you.

Oooh, I like your flooring @CabbageBearGoat is it tiles or vinyl (or vinyl tiles?). I'm looking for something like that for when we eventually do the bathroom.

Didn't manage the shower curtain, will hopefully do it tomorrow (my day off). I have a day of taxiing the DCs about and want to get on top of some paperwork in between. DH has done a good job of the kitchen tonight, I did the weekly food shop after work and it is all put away.

CabbageBearGoat · 13/06/2024 23:40

@EasilyDefined they're tiles! I love them - they're so easy to clean too. Assuming they went down when the conservatory was built in the late 80s, I think they've done very well indeed.

ItsieDitzyBitsOfOnionInTheSoup · 13/06/2024 23:43

I'm loving everyone's flowers, especially ED's foxgloves. Saw some of those in the woods the other day.

Last few days ta-da's in addition to the usual morning and evening routine:

🌾 Food shopping
🌾 Clothes shopping for when summer finally arrives
🌾 Decluttering
🌾 Reading
🌾 Tidied hallway
🌾 I've only had my summer clothes out a week but I'm too cold! It's not very summery here, so I looked out some different ones suitable for colder weather and a coat and shoes to match. Summer clothes put away again for now
🌾 Took stuff to donations point
🌾 Met up with a friend who I haven't seen for a while, for tea and cake
🌾 Bought a new plant

HazelNotHungryLC · 14/06/2024 04:00

Cabbage I hope the new layout works well for you

ED it really helps when DH can help (and actually do a good job)

Ditzy I completely forgot I was adding pictures of flowers this month! 🤦‍♀️ thank you for the reminder! This week has been stressful, Saturday is the wedding and there's still lots to do.
I'm sad for you that it's too cold to wear summer clothes right now 😩

I figured if I add a couple pictures I might be able to redeem myself for not adding any the past week or so!

Ta das:
😴 dropped DS off at band bootcamp
😴 worked all day
😴 washed the Jeep
😴 watered my plants
😴 took a bunch of things out to the Jeep that I'll need to take to ILs tomorrow for the wedding
😴 wrote my shopping list out for things I still need to get for the wedding for my food I'm bringing

I just got done with my bedtime tea, it's shower time for me, then I can apply my self tanner before going to bed.
I don't work tomorrow, but there's so much to do I'm waking up at my usual 5:30am. I'll be able to relax once the wedding is over!

Friday is clean your car and purse day.
Friday night is date night.

Friday's missions:
bathroom
Clean & shine your sink and countertop (if you have one). Remove everything from the surface, spray and scrub, removing water spots etc. Shine it up with glass cleaner & put things back where they belong (wipe them as you put them away to remove dust etc).
spare bedroom
Set your timer for 15 minutes, sit down with a cup of tea or coffee (or whatever drink you'd like) and relax. It's time to take care of you!

Today has been a chasing about errand kinda day. Had a hospital appointment so was in town anyway, so it made sense. Morning of stupid little errands - nothing major, but the kind of little errands that stop you finishing what you need to do if you don't do them.

There is a whole heap of stuff that needs doing but high pain, low energy, functioning is hard kinda day. So what ever happens it will be bare minimum.

I heard something today that made a lot of sense and also made sense to share.

when we are children we find comfort in the familitarity in the structure provided by others. As adults we use routines to find that comfort from the predictable and structured. Aka routines can lessen the feeling of chaos and can reduce decision fatigue.
It is a point i have been pondering on.

HazelNotHungryLC · 15/06/2024 05:22

Dragons I agree! The routines we develop as adults are not draining at all, they are routine, as in, it's just something we do, on this day, at this time etc.. we don't even really have to think about it, it just happens. To add to that, if we don't do it, it throws us off of routine and it doesn't feel right.

Sorry for not posting any links or anything! The wedding was yesterday and it has been crazy! It went well, everything just fell into place at the last minute and it was smooth going.

We got everything cleaned up pretty quickly as it was all hands on deck and even got home early enough to watch a movie!

Today we will be going out to go fishing (not me, I'll just be relaxing!). DH still hasn't told me what he wants for dinner and since it's father's day it's his choice. I'm guessing it might depend on what they catch..

Saturday was family fun day.
Sunday is renew your spirit day. No missions, but there are still baby steps.

Monday is home bleugh day.
We are moving into zone 4 this week: master bedroom.
Monday's mission is to spend 15 minutes decluttering under your bed. Flylady says this week is a major decluttering week, so don't get overwhelmed and use your timer. Take out anything that doesn't belong under your bed and if you don't need or want the things under your bed anymore, either donate or toss it.

Baby Step: https://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/31-beginner-babysteps/day-17/
Set a bedtime and stick to it! That is one I struggle with and try to work on every day, lately I haven't been able to stick to it, but hope that will change soon!

Besutiful cakes @HazelNotHungryLC

I’ve been listening to decluttering audiobooks and FlyLady’s Sink Reflections. They’re helping me keep focussed.

I ordered some summerweight duvets to tide us over while waiting for a new washing-machine. Now to sort out all the storage boxes under my bed.

SingToTheSky · 17/06/2024 11:25

Hello. Have completely lapsed with posting and keeping ta da lists! Haven’t managed much at home TBH other than just about keeping on top of the kitchen. 🙈 Think I’ll just lurk for now!

TheMainCharacter · 17/06/2024 13:57

@SingToTheSky same here with not managing to post or do lists. House is ok…but only ok, if anyone looked past the surface they’d see it was only clean on the surface.

Today I have done 2x lol, vacuumed through, cleaned bathrooms (not a detailed clean but the shower/sink/loo/ surfaces are clean), half heartedly dusted 3x bedrooms (tidying dc bedrooms a bit first) and mopped hard floors. Then I went outside to hang out my second lol, decided it was lovely weather so took a coffee out and sat and read my book for a bit 😆

I’m inwardly grumbling to myself about how chipped/marked all the paintwork is meaning it never looks clean but the last time I outwardly grumbled about it dp said no point until the youngest two are a bit older so I need to put up with it for now!

Off to wipe over the kitchen cupboard fronts before the school run and exchanging library books. Dusting the living rooms can wait til weds/thurs as can changing the beds.

@HazelNotHungryLC such pretty cakes, you do work hard don’t you?

Hope everyone else is well 👋

HazelNotHungryLC · 18/06/2024 03:42

Character my problem is not being able to say no! So yes, then I'm ran rugged! Thank you and Scourgify for the cake love.
I know what you mean about paint chipping making the house look scruffy. I don't have that any more since the whole house got painted, but I don't recommend going through what we did to get it painted.

Sing taking a break from posting is sometimes a necessity, just don't forget about us!

Scourgify how did sorting out your storage boxes go?

I had kind of a rough day today, I thought I had misplaced (or threw away) someone's cheque that they wrote for a fundraiser for DS (band camp etc), so I was stressed over that. I went home at lunch instead of going to ILs so I could rummage through my bins 🤢 to see if I could find it, nothing. I then texted him to tell him I lost it, for him to tell me he didn't give me a cheque yet! 🤦‍♀️ I wasted half my day on something that didn't happen.

After work we had a meeting for the band boosters and got a bunch of information on camps, trips and more fundraisers. Ate leftovers for dinner and now have my feet up.
We're having a girl's day out shopping tomorrow, so I'll see how much I can get done. I am off Wednesday this week as well though so can make up for it.

We went to a lake for father's day to go fishing and I took some pictures, so figured I'd share.

Tuesday is plan & play day.
Tuesday's mission is to clear of the top of your bed this time. Do you have clothes or other things taking up space on your bed? Do you have to move things off to get into bed at night? Take time to sort through this stuff & put away those things where they belong, whether it's in a drawer, out for wash, donation or bin. Or just in another room.

Read the 11 commandments flylady created: https://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/flyladys-11-commandments/ I don't necessarily like the name for them, but they're pretty good guidelines.

Finding this quite a challenge to juggle around a full time job and two small ones! Cleaners have cancelled this morning, too.

I have decluttered my makeup. Cobwebs in spare room are still waiting, as is decluttering under the bed (full of my teenage band tshirts, not sure how to let those go). Luckily I don't have any junk on my bed!

Beautiful cakes and lake photos. It has rained more or less non stop here for weeks.

SleepingIceDragons · 18/06/2024 14:13

Struggling here as the flare i triggered is kicking my ass at the moment. I need to get a whole heap of stuff done, but the painkillers are not doing what they are needed to right now so it is a struggle bus.

ta da
finally place the internet orders i had been procrastinating on doing
get the cottage pie batch cook into the freezer.
leave tea for the people to cook for themselves

Also need to clear up the kitchen a bit beofre i have to head out this evening.

HazelNotHungryLC · 18/06/2024 15:34

Dilly don't feel like you need to do it all! When you're starting out, just the baby steps will do. Shine your sink at night, get your clothes out for the next day, make your bed in the morning & get dressed every morning. Focus on those few things and add to it. Even if you don't add anything else for this month, that will help. You will find they come naturally over time so it's easy to add to.

Dragons I'm sorry your flare is kicking your ass at the moment. I hope your pain meds kick in soon 🤞

Lounge rearrangement continues here, and I've done a bit of email admin too. Some good wins today:

  • Emptied kallax
  • Dusted inside and outside of kallax
  • Filled one bookcase with boardgames
  • Fixed alignment of door magnet on boardgame bookcase (we've had this problem for 8 years and I've just never got around to it 😬)
  • Cleared and dusted mantelpiece
  • Vacuumed newly exposed bits of carpet
  • Filled another bookcase with books (!)
  • Cleared household email inbox and organised a few future projects

I don't have anything in my bed except bedding so I'm cleared of that task... but I really do need to clear the top of m chest of drawers. I need to set a timer and just get to it. Maybe tomorrow... 😬

Scourgify · 18/06/2024 17:51

I kinda slid the underbed storage boxes out, looked inside, sighed, put them back, and got sidetracked by realising that some missing bank statements were right there on the chest of drawers, just mouldering into the scenery.

I put them and some stuff about smart gas bills into the office, and chopped a bit more off my triffid/tree. Decluttered some Which? magazines from 2021.

Set off great this morning, only to be knocked off course by a declined credit card for “illegal action”. DH phoned the issuer three times and ended up with palpitations.

I ate a packet of biscuits and fell asleep till the teens battered on the side gate to get in.

Not my best couple of days, but the kitchen is getting more under control and the sun is shining.

HazelNotHungryLC · 19/06/2024 05:21

Scourgify isn't it crazy that things end up sitting in plain sight, yet we don't see them any more?! It happens all the time here. Sometimes to "see" everything in the room I take a picture of it. That can be shocking at times!

Cabbage you've been busy! I'm another one that has a clear bed, but I didn't sort through anything in my bedroom today.

I was out all day so absolutely nothing got done today! Well, not by me. I had DS vacuum the whole house, wash 1 lol and rotate the DW 🤭
I have a long to do list for tomorrow, so may be back shortly with that list, unless I fall asleep first.

OP posts:
HazelNotHungryLC · 19/06/2024 05:29

Wednesday is anti-procrastination day.
Wednesday's mission is to sort out the left side of your bed. Put things away from your bedside table or from the floor, do NOT put them on your bed or floor that you just cleared. Put them where they belong, wherever that may be!

Baby Step: https://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/31-beginner-babysteps/day-19/
This is to read the testimonials on her website, but there is one on this link about the bed and breakfast. This is actually something that is in my mind for what I would like my house to be like, but never seems to come to fruition!

Today's picture is a lizard we saw on our girl's day out today, sunbathing on a big rock.

I am a lizard today basking in the sun

Not the most productive week so far. Have decluttered a bit though. One of the reasons I got started on it was because of things blending in with everything else and becoming harder to find. I sorted through my bedroom last month and it's looking quite good at the moment. I never go under the bed though

I love it when I'm staying in a hotel and there's nothing there except the bare minimum that I've brought with me. I wouldn't want my home to look quite that empty, I love decorative items, just not clutter
