Fledglings awaiting April organisation... and a plan - the Flylady thread

Welcome to the April Flylady thread. This is a lovely friendly thread where we loosely follow the Flylady system (see the Flylady website ) in the hope of having organised homes and lives.

Every day I will post a link to the launchpad which has everything you need for that day if you do want to follow the system strictly. Plenty of options to follow the system more loosely as well :).

Please do familiarise yourself with the Flylady website, especially if you are new. The Flylady is (understandably) keen that people do look at the website.

On the website there is information for beginners. You can also sign up to the Flylady emails but we would advise caution as there are hundreds of them.

We post our achievements (ta das) and our to do lists and any other general chatter about life / flying.

Information on getting started: www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/

The launch pad is also a good starting place:www.flylady.net/c/lp.php

Fly stands for Finally Loving Yourself. The general idea is that short bursts of tidying / organisation are more achievable than marathon efforts. Flylady advises 15 minute bursts is effort but you can tweak this to fit your own circumstances.

Be kind to yourselves, jump in where you are and be careful not to crash and burn!

A daily summary (which should update automatically every day) is available on the Flylady website at flight plan here.

The link to the current zone and missions is [[http://www.flylady.net/c/sp.php#missions here].

Re. zones, do what works for you. I don’t always stick to the zones myself and do what works best at the time, with varying degrees of success!

daily focus

missions for the week

Flykids mission

April’s habit is usually making your bed which is a nice easy one Smile.

beginner babysteps.

The best place to look for an overall summary is the launch pad.

Happy flying everyone.

Also a huge thank you to Chic for a lovely March thread as always.

Hobby stuff definitely can be an issue Expletive. I can’t decide whether the stuff should be up in DDs’ rooms or downstairs in a central location. Currently some is upstairs and some is downstairs Confused. It seems ok but I feel maybe it should all be in the same place iyswim? Why on earth do I waste thinking time on this??!

Sounds like a nice day Mog.

toostressy I wonder about stuff like that too. Mine recently was dressing up stuff, it's in several different areas and it winds me up. I tell dh and dc they look at me like this Hmm and then I remember oh yeah it doesn't matter does it!! GrinGrin

Monday madness today - home bleugh plus decluttering plus I'm going to go for a run which I haven't done for ages so might be tricky!

Must get the dc up they're still asleep Shock

Lisette1940 · 29/04/2019 07:55

Gosh people are getting fit on this thread. I was surprised how unfit I've become when I was gardening. Finished the front garden and cleaned the shears and secuturs in preparation for sharpening. I've bought a whetstone sharpener on the net. Need to chase those quotes.

Two zones this week. Living/dining needs a good Hoover and polish. Hall, cloak and stairs needs to have grubby walls wiped down. Need to buy more fruit.

TooStressyTooMessy · 29/04/2019 09:03

Lisette, I have tried to get fit but failing atm as in doing so have managed to end up with plantar fasciitis and now wrist is sore too Angry. Going to see a different physio tomorrow. Currently having a break from exercise Angry.

DH off today so we are out for breakfast Smile. Need to rescue the house later though. So grateful to PIL for looking after DDs for bits of this weekend but there are clothes and dance kit everywhere!

BrewBrewBrewBrewBrew for everyone.

Hope DS feeling better Ive.

Lisette1940 · 29/04/2019 09:12

Sorry to hear that toostressy. I have weak wrists so modified pushups are my only hope. I'm trying to get fit in preparation for impending old age (I'm late 40s)

TooStressyTooMessy · 29/04/2019 09:32

Oh really? I think I have tendinitis in my wrist from weight training. Having a few weeks off then going to figure out what to do. The gym is so friendly and I don’t want to leave but need to see how I can modify things. Are you ok with the modified push ups then? As in on your knees or something else?

OP posts:
ExpletiveDelighted · 29/04/2019 09:36

I have plantar fasciitis, it's in remission now but I do have to take care or it starts back up. About two years ago ir was horrendous, both feet, could hardly walk at times. Stretching, massage and orthotics or Birkenstocks are what have helped
mine the most, also avoiding anything with squidgy soles like Crocs or Skechers, although some swear by these.

Shadycorner · 29/04/2019 10:48

I think I am allergic to exercise Grin apart from dog walking but have rough schedule from cardiologist last time I was there and want to improve my figures for next bike test. Also need to improve suppleness if I want to go back to riding properly (as opposed to ambling on enormous armchair horse which is my current level). With riding, you have to have "shoulders like a soldier and hips like a whore" and it is your core that absorbs those contrasting movements. Except I currently don't have one Grin. My core has essentially buggered orf. Need to try and spot it amongst the flab and seize it back!

As I've mentioned the other day, it is horrifying that it is nearly May already. I have never known a year go so fast. I did have surgery at beginning of Feb which rather ate up time but still... . It's like I am only starting to do things now, that I normally do in January!

I had plantar fascitis really badly a while back (when I started doing "farm" work Wink) fully recovered by resting totally (which is just not poss if you walk to work or shops but just mentioning it because I did the spiky roller treatment thing and stretching exercises but only total rest cured it). It does recurr slightly if I do something very active wearing the wrong footwear but I am better at spotting the signs ifyswim.

Since then I have discovered everyone over here wears Vionic shoes and New Balance trainers for plantar fascitis or when foot arch needs support. They both work well. Friends have gone to private podiatrists and had special foot support (ionics? not sure of name?) made for them, and without exception, none have worked! They've had just as good, if not better, success wearing standard foot supports off Amazon (there's a brand that are bright green and they are good, will try and find) or wearing shoes above. One very good tip though is to buy a slightly wedged slipper and NEVER walk around with bare feet! This to me is counter-intuitive, as one assumes walking with bare feet is naturally good for you, but there we go!

As for storage of sports kit etc, we have a very tall house, so it made sense for us to store it in the hall. Unless you have excellent, expansive , bedroom storage, I also think it makes sense and is more efficient, to separate sports kit from mounds of ordinary clothing. At various points, DD has done at least nine activities (not all together!) but maybe three or so at a time. So the best solution I found was to buy a long coat hook rack with slots for identification cards above each hook. This can be as simple as a plank of wood with hooks screwed in, with blackboard paint painted rectangles above each hook, then get a load of cheap drawstring swim/gym bags off Amazon, or sew them (I did both) and hang each one up under peg marked "gym" or "badminton" etc. I found it easy to just grab kit from hanging bags, launder them, and return directly to same bags in hall without giving the stuff opportunity to go wandering around the rest of the house! Water bottles can go in on the morning of the activity. And if you need helmets/ shoes or any bit of extra kit that doesn't go in bags, they can be easily accommodated by a simple bench or crate underneath the pegs.

Each to their own, but having experimented, I have honestly found that this is the most efficient way of doing things. I'm lucky in that I have a fairly big hall, but friends have adopted the same system, but rotated the kit bags from hanging in bedroom to hall the night before it is required. As long as everything for one activity is accommodated together in one bag, you are winning Grin.

Have a productive start to the week everyone!

The office (DH) hasn't prepared work for me to do yet, so I have an unexpected full domestic day!

Ta da:
Morning routine inc s&s, wms &TD on, fed wms again, shined sink, emptied DW, and DH walked furries.

Just having coffee and then out to do small supermarket run for ingreds to make cake for teachers who went on trip. And then going to make batter and onion gravy for supper tonight (toad in the hole). Might try and make a soup too if I have time!

Then need to hoover bathroom, finish collecting outdated prescription meds and take to chemist. Then hour in boudoir.

Then try and sort out dirty clothes from clean from dd's bags left open and scattered about on hall floor (sigh) from trip. That might wait until she comes in from school actually!

Have a productive start to the week everyone!

Shadycorner · 29/04/2019 10:49

Orthotics not ionics (thank you *Expletive!)

Shadycorner · 29/04/2019 10:52

Have also folded towels this morning and sorted laundry

(Sorry for mahoosive essay)

Lisette1940 · 29/04/2019 13:12

I can do push ups against a wall to strengthen my wrists. Push ups on knees are my goal Grin

TooStressyTooMessy · 29/04/2019 13:27

Thanks for all advice SC, Lisette and Expletive. Interesting what you say about insoles SC. I am fairly far down the line in terms of physio, custom orthotics etc. and nothing has helped Angry. Have seen Vionics recommended before so may investigate.

In terms of flying, washing of laundry is under control. However the drying... it is all on the line and I am waiting for it to rain Hmm. Putting away not started yet.

Have cleaned two drawers in kitchen.

OP posts:
Shadycorner · 29/04/2019 13:34

Well the orthotics have worked for Expletive so maybe give them more time Toostressy ... . It does take a while to improve. Flowers

Cripes Lisette! Grin

Cagliostro · 29/04/2019 13:40

What’s the bike test sc? I must get on our bike more often, it’s definitey getting easier so I could do more. Want to print off a family chart too, something like each of us colours a square for every kilometre and the number of squares is a particular distance, like the length of Hadrian’s wall or something :o so we have a family goal.

Interesting about the New Balance trainers, I just got some (after procrastinating for months - I HATE buying trainers as I am so fussy about fit, so I wait until the old pair are beyond falling apart. And actually now I think about it they do feel very supportive on my arches

Shadycorner · 29/04/2019 14:28

Oh it's only the test they give you at the cardiologist's, you know, where you are starkers up top and they cover you in electrodes or something Grin Take your resting heart rate, then make you cycle for a while at a certain heart rate (60 bpm??) , upping the intensity every so often and taking your blood pressure while doing it. Then test your recovery rate. It's a joy I can tell you!

I joked with the doctor that she had put it on a "80 yr old does light gardening for 20 mins setting" and she laughed and said "you'll never know!" Confused Grin Blush

But bloomin' well determined to do better next time!

Like the Hadrian's Wall idea! Walked from Blanchlands to Vindolanda in my youth. Must take dd and do the same!

I find New Balance v supportive too!
