Fledglings Fly in Flaming June; C.H.A.O.S. will be banished soon!

Welcome to the June 2012 Fledgling Flyers thread. Park your mops, buckets and microfibre cloths here!!

A huge "thank you" to Toffee for leading us throughout May!! Hope you have a fabulous holiday in Spain!!

If you're house is a mess and you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and Wine along the way.

We advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's tips on restoring order to our homes, and as we are all at different stages we will be using one of the following methods:

  • repeat or start baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

More info here, here and here

All welcome!!

Thanks for telling us, fatsams. Just read your blog post and you are spot on. There is lots about Flylady that I don't bother with, but that's probably why I still don't have a perfectly tidy and organised house Hmm.

SC - please don't worry, I didn't read your post as condescending at all. In fact, that is exactly what I'm worried about and I did discuss it with DS1 this afternoon, as we walked the older and therefore relatively sedate Collie. He has his heart set on a Collie puppy and is on the verge of tears whenever I say we may not be able to have one, but I will do none of us any favours if we get the wrong dog for our family, so I am gently preparing him for the possibility that our perfect dog may not be a pedigree Collie. Have been in touch with some organisations for advice, so we're not rushing into anything. Glad you're feeling better, by the way.

Have to stop typing now because DH is nodding off beside me and can't sleep if I'm bashing away at the keys. So will just wave at everyone else.

Night all.

castlelough · 13/06/2012 00:45

ToffeeWhirl · 13/06/2012 09:07

Morning all. Appt with CAMHS for DS1 this morning and DS2 has come down with stomach pains and diarrhoea, so now we have to take him along with us too Hmm.

Did anyone see the thread about DP throwing chewed-up loo paper at the bathroom ceiling and allowing his partner's son to take the blame? It was bizarre and now the thread has disappeared. Why would a thread disappear? Does it mean the OP asked for it to be deleted or could it mean that it was all untrue? It's really bugging me. I wanted to know the end of the story.

Probably not much chance of Flying to any great extent today, as DS2 will be with me too. Will stick to basic routines, prioritising the kitchen ( haven't done last night's washing up yet Blush).

Hope you all have a good day.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 13/06/2012 09:23

I have just changed my MFP username to the same as my MN name to avoid confusion.

Back later

BitchyInTheCorner · 13/06/2012 09:25

It was probably a troll and thus a wind up. Hence going poof. There are some odd mn related going ons in FB world too.

Tired need coffee and chocolate. Then MUST do paperwork. Need coffee and chocolated. Corner shop bbl.

laurenamium · 13/06/2012 09:25

Whaaaat toffee that's crazy! That's something the naughty kids at school did- at school! They wouldn't have done it at their own home!! Good luck with camhs xx

CarpeJugulum · 13/06/2012 10:26

Good luck with CAMHS today Toffee

Flying by quickly as am still feeling "coldy" and DS is playing up with teeth while I try to work (report is compiling just now, so using the time wisely!).

Today, the only things I need to do are
~ lay away washing and create "ironing space" in wardrobe so ironing isn't lying around (but I know where it is when I want to do it!)
~ wash a hand towel/cleaning cloth assortment on just now
~ WAH job in progress
~ take DS to soft play before I strangle him Hmm (disclaimer: I love him dearly, but right now, I want to extract all his teeth to stop any more coming in!)
~ stick on another wash for us Shock as DH decided to clear out his clothes pile - after I asked him yesterday Angry
~ order Father's Day present done, but not due to arrive until Monday Sad so will get a cheap mug from supermarket as a holding gift
~ hoover living room to remove the crumbs from the demolition of "Toast Mountain"
~ work out what's for dinner/maybe meal plan

Right, report has compiled so off to finish work!

MaggieMcVitie · 13/06/2012 11:40

I've done the same as Whoknows and changed my MFP name to my MN name - Sunday weigh-ins are good here too Grin

ToffeeWhirl · 13/06/2012 12:53

Bitchy - how disappointing about the thread. I was really taken in and dying to know what happened.

CAMHS meeting went very well (thanks for your good luck, lauren).

Back to tackle the kitchen and supervise DS's online History lesson. Lunches done. Now DS2 is playing upstairs in his room Grin and DS1 is about to start on his homework before his next lesson at 2.

Have achey legs still Confused. Have had them for a few days. Mild virus, maybe? Whatever it is, it's very annoying and I wish it'd go away.

sanguinechompa · 13/06/2012 13:53

Hello everyone!

fatsamsgrandslam Thanks for letting us know - much appreciated.
(And thanks for being nice about us!!! Grin) We tend to cherry pick the best of Flylady on here for the very reasons you mention.
I'm reading a book atm called 'Housework Blues' by Danielle Raine subtitled 'How to cope with the mental and emotional challenge of keeping a home'. I mention it because she was facing pretty much the same issues as your good self (as described in your blog) when she started out and although I don't agree with everything in it, it's definitely worth a read. She in turn recommends two books on decluttering which I haven't read yet, but look good; 'Cut the Clutter' by Cynthia Townley Ewer and 'Clearing the Clutter' by Mary Lambert. Or for a quick start, Mimi Tanner's e-book 'Declutter Fast' which you can download immediately. Good luck with everything!

Everyone else ....just catching up. DD and I have just had our first proper meal since Monday morning so I think we are well on the way to recovery now. Hopefully she can go back to school tomorrow (or at least go in for the afternoon) as she is missing revision in preparation for exams next week. We've been learning a poem for her French elocution exam and going over maths tables and various maths probs - but not the same as being at school. There was lots of rabbit-entertaining going on in between as well. We are able to let them out in the garden now and unlike guinea pigs, they come back inside by themselves!! Quite a revelation!

Fortnightly-ironing-lady-who-usually-only-shows-up-once-every-four-to-five-weeks-is-back-after-a-week-and-a-half-but-on-the-wrong-day! Oh well ..ironing pile is permanent fixture in this house so I'm not complaining. Think the communication is going wrong somewhere - she is Colombian and only speaks Spanish and my Spanish is virtually non-existent and evidently non-comprehensible!!

Toffee glad the meeting went well despite yr ds2's tummy - hope he feels better soon. Could achey legs be caused by aftermath of running/dehydration in Spain or are you going down with something? Hope not latter!

And thanks re: dog post. I know your ds has his heart set on a collie but once he gets to meet and consider a few more, you never know, he may have his heart captured by a dog of an entirely different breed!

You too Carpe sorry you and your ds are still feeling under the weather. Here's to a speedy recovery and/or full set of teeth!

Castlelough hope you get the work experience you want

Leaves out bar of Belgian choc for Bitchy

Lauren Envy at your springer - they are gorgeous!!

BODY CLUTTER:
Lauren/Maggie/Whoknows/Carpeand everyone else re: Body Clutter. Glad Sunday weigh-ins OK. Will start this week!!
And will draw up MFP list later on today once I have scrolled up and down a bit!

Huge wing flaps to anyone I've missed!

LinzerTorte · 13/06/2012 14:03

The e-book sounds good, SC - where can you download it from? (I've googled but to no avail.)

BODY CLUTTER.

OK everyone. Here?s the deal.

For those of us that want to: we can weigh in on the thread on Sundays and either state weight or not, or how much we have lost or in my case gained or simply say what exercise we have done during the week: how many runs/how many steps etc etc or that we have eaten healthily etc or anything we would like to report under BODY CLUTTER subject.

And for those who want to exchange info/track progress on MyFitnessPal , here is a list for ease of reference:
(Please let me know if I have made any mistakes or left anyone out!!)

Will try and join the bodyclutter group once I've got settled with something!

Conference yesterday was great. V informative and useful, lots of networking. I've made a resolution to go to more of them!

SC - I translate French & German to English.

Um, flying, today ought to be house bleugh day but I've been too busy catching up from yesterday...

Ta Da!

Dusting
Tidy bedroom
Clean bathroom
Remake beds

LinzerTorte · 13/06/2012 15:02

SC No, I'm not on MFP - I do need to eat more healthily (and to drink more water!) and keep up the exercise but I'm not trying to lose weight, so is it worth me joining?

And did you see my post above yours re the e-book? Must look into the other books as well, although I sometimes think I'm better at reading about decluttering than actually doing it. Blush

Blue Glad the conference was worthwhile; I should really do some more CPD activites.

BitchyInTheCorner · 13/06/2012 15:05

I am in on the body declutter. But not sure about the mfp I was on food focus and my sticking power on entering stuff was low. Has anyone else try food focus and can compare with MFP?

Right

not kill ds
bed at a decent time

Must go get ds from school.

Brices · 13/06/2012 15:20

15 mins bathroom (now all done)

To do
Hang laundry out
Ring Drs
Bath DC
Yoga class

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 13/06/2012 15:39

Linzer - MFP is quite good for showing you where your bad habits are, also for keeping track of your exercise, but I don't know if I'd be motivated enough to keep plugging it all in if I was already slim.

*Bitchy8 - I've never tried Food Focus. I like the idea on MFP of having friends though, you can chat a bit like FB but it is only seen by your friends, if you have your privacy set (not as complicated as FB). The only friends I have on it are the fellow Flyers.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 13/06/2012 15:40

Although I did do about an hour with the magic eraser block at work today, important visitors tomorrow.

Honu · 13/06/2012 15:55

Still here - just quiet!

About 25% of my body is clutter but I'm not trying to lose all that, I'm definitely not posting any pictures or filling in anything tedious . BUT, for the last few days I have been writing down exactly what I eat (no cheating because only I see it and there's no point in cheating yourself!) and this is stopping reducing the occasions when a piece of cake or a bar piece of chocolate is lying around and it leaps into my mouth unbidden. I will post if I've lost anything each week.

Honu · 13/06/2012 16:09

Toffee I think the idea of a puppy is great but really agree a collie is not very suitable as a first dog. They can be very difficult if not either really well trained or very old. Once the dog is about a year old agility training is great fun.

Like SC I am truly excellent at reading how to be organised. But get v bored when it gets to the practical.

A young crow fell down the lounge chimney today. Did I mention the lounge is still full of homeless crates of stuff waiting for a completed extension? The Boy cat thought this was dinner come to him without the need to stalk it and the combination of crow, crates, cat and dog (at least the crates and the dog stayed at ground level!) was. not. good. Crow eventually flew into window, was slightly stunned but still very vocal, enough so I could catch it in a towel and release it outside.

Am getting very fed up with living in crate-filled house. Will probably be even worse when they try connecting old and new - deckchairs on Titanic would be a breeze!

DH calling again - must go

sanguinechompa · 13/06/2012 16:24

Linzer here the sign up/buying procedure looks a faddle but there are plenty of reviews of it on line if you want to check it out thoroughly in advance. Paperwork section good apparently. No, definitely wouldn't bother with MFP if you are already slim Smile Too time consuming!!

Blue so glad the conference went well and Envy re such fluency in two languages other than your own. Well done on mega-mega e-mail deletion session and all yr list!

Bitchy I've tried and failed both FF and MFP. I found the latter to be much better technically ie easier for tech numpties such as myself to use eg there is a facility whereby you can easily log items/meals you eat regularly without having to log them in multiple times. Exercise logs more accessible on MFP too. My problem (as usual) is consistency. The last time I logged in to MFP, there was a message from them waiting for me which said "Sanguinechompa has not logged in for 2 weeks. She might need some encouragement." Blush

Brices same here re the technical stuff especially when it comes to sharing info or not with others. I always get hugely confused. Guess we can ask Whoknows for advice if we get stuck!!

Honu I am definitely in the negative old bat camp!!! Agree that logging everything one eats does have a 'preventative' effect!

OP posts:
sanguinechompa · 13/06/2012 16:29

x posts

Crikey Honu hadn't realised the work was still ongoing. That has got to be so stressful - not helped by wayward crows - think I would have freaked out at having to catch it in a towel!!

Bad enough having to wipe a rabbit's bottom today
