Welcome to the June 2012 Fledgling Flyers thread. Park your mops, buckets and microfibre cloths here!!

A huge "thank you" to Toffee for leading us throughout May!! Hope you have a fabulous holiday in Spain!!

If you're house is a mess and you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and Wine along the way.

We advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's tips on restoring order to our homes, and as we are all at different stages we will be using one of the following methods:

  • repeat or start baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

More info here, here and here

All welcome!!

Thanks for the link, SC. I'm not sure I can really justify spending $20 on yet another decluttering/organisational book, as inspiring as I find them, although the first book you mentioned does sound interesting from the reviews on Amazon (as well as being half the price of the e-book). Maybe I just need to reread No More Clutter to get myself going!

Engelsmeisje · 13/06/2012 18:55

Blush I almost dropped off the thread Blush

Obviously have a lot of catching up to do, but am still managing to do my morning and evening routines.

I will do better Blush

laurenamium · 13/06/2012 19:50

I'm in a little mood with myself tonight! I can't walk far or exercise because I'm limping and in pain, and it's starting to REALLY annoy me! But despite this i do have a small list!

Ta da:
Cleaned kitchen tops
Shined sink
Cleaned hob
Routines
An hour of gardening
Tidied the playroom
Cleaned all the shelves and drawers in playroom- why did I choose white Angry

Hope you aren't too ill carpe!

Glad you are feeling better sc, I Grin at your Ironing lady situation! The language barrier must be a nightmare!

honu the crow debacle sounds a nightmare to be involved in but I bet it was funny to watch Grin, I don't envy you with ongoing work though Sad

sanguinechompa · 13/06/2012 20:01

I hear youLinzer! As previously mentioned, I have spent far too much money on them myself. Can really recommend the original book - 'Housework Blues' though - there are some things in there that have actually 'stuck' ifyswim but it's more about getting over mental hurdles than offering a specific action plan.

Engelsmeijse sticking at morning and evening routines IS doing well!!

Oh no Lauren now you and your horse are limping! Here's to a speedy recovery for both of you!

Back to asterisks tonight because I'm in a bit of a rush. Dh has returned from business trip and has crashed out exhausted, dd also fast asleep in bed, so I can sneak off to watch a film in solitary splendour if I can manage to stay awake

Tomorrow's baby-step, number fourteen for Thurs 14th June is here how to use a calendar. Pretty basic stuff frankly.

We are still in Zone 3, the bathroom + one extra room - details of zone and detailed cleaning here Try and spend 15 mins decluttering in current zone.

If your zone 3 is already decluttered, you can progress to detailed cleaning.

You can find tomorrow's mission (and indeed all the missions for the week ahead) here

We are still trying to drink more water in June here

Thursday is errand day

If I've missed anything it will be here on the flight plan and here is the kids challenge, both of which should update.

G'night all!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 13/06/2012 21:30

Bitchy MFP might not suit you because you are only allowed one namechange ever!

BitchyInTheCorner · 13/06/2012 22:17

ShockGrin

but I have been good recently!!

GrinGrinGrinGrin

i have lost an evening to a wii game. Blush on a plus note i am ready for bed already.

Erm tomorrow needs a list and proper functioning.

up and out
make ds' lunch box
ds to school on time

double check paperwork for training
cut out and run up two bags
ironing

double check that ex has enough clothes for the wkend

there is probably a ton of other stuff that needs to be done but as bags will take longer then planned (as these things always do) I shall try to be realistic. for a bloody change

BitchyInTheCorner · 13/06/2012 22:21

(pst whoknows you must have read my mind though as I was considering a nc) lol

fatsamsgrandslam · 13/06/2012 22:33

I'm glad I didn't offend anyone with my blog! And for those of you who don't want to buy more books about decluttering and organisation, you could always read a blog for free Wink.
It's very early days so I know there's not much there at the mo, but in the next few weeks I've got lots of posts up my sleeve with tips, ideas and product reviews.
Anyway, sorry for hijacking! As you were! Grin

laurenamium · 13/06/2012 22:40

Does anyone have any experience with night terrors? Sad DD just had a horrendous one- she seemed to be scared of me this time and there's only me and her here ever so I couldn't even get anyone else to hold her Sad I've started a thread in behaviour but thought one of you wise ladies might have a solution or advice!

BitchyInTheCorner · 13/06/2012 22:47

Ds had severe night terrors. You couldn't touch him, he'd scream and scream and scream whilst thrashing about with his eyes open. Only thing that I found to work to gently bring him around was to turn up the light (was on dimmer switch) and to talk calmingly but not to touch him. I would sing nursery rhymes at him. row row row your boat, old mac donald and something else that I can't recall. Just sang them over and over and over again with reasurances all was fine and the it was mummy and he was ok. Eventually he would crawl over for a cuddle. I used to say to him, I am not going to touch you until you come touch me. You can have a cuddle if you want one. If I tried to touch him before that he would lash out and panic. So it wasn't worth it. Feel free to pm if you want to chat about it off board though.

With ds there was a pattern to them too. Growth spurts, illness were when he was most likely to get them. He still gets the odd one these days but it does get better.

right really am going to bed now. night.

laurenamium · 13/06/2012 22:57

That's really useful bitchy thank you! Tonight has been the first time DD has objected to me touching her or try to cuddle her Sad ill definitely try songs in future! Has to be better than continually saying "it's ok" for 15 minutes! Thank you!

likelucklove · 13/06/2012 23:03

Lauren My DBrother had these terrible up until he was 13. He was also bad with sleep walking and talking. I was the only one who could get him to 'come to' if that makes sense. Done the same as Bitchy and used dimmer, did not touch him just talk him through his dream while he was still asleep and then stayed awake with him until he had got over it. I know how upsetting it is Sad

To Do

Morning routine
Go to doctors and change address
Ring up dentist to register - No answer
Send email RE complaint
Fill out survey
Update kindle
Take DD for jabs
Baby step 13 - do today's mission and wash bath mat
Return clothes via Post Office for neighbour - Do tomorrow because it wasn't open
Make chocolate crunch and flapjacks and WW cake for me Grin I love my mum purging her cupboards!
Before bed routine

I'm pooped. And hungry. Have some uni friends coming over tomorrow for a belated birthday picnic and it's all rubbish food I can't have. But will be fun planning C>5K.

Hope you all had a good day and congratulations to the body clutter people on a fab day! And congratulations to the rest of you, who I'm sure all had a fab day too sound like bloody Hallmark now

laurenamium · 13/06/2012 23:06

Thank you likeluck! I guess hauling her out of her cot And taking her into a dimly lit quiet front room so I could sit on the sofa has probably made it worse!Blush I definitely know for next time!!

BitchyInTheCorner · 13/06/2012 23:09

Just to warn you though sometimes ds would get more hysterical if you tried to sing. It really is a case of playing it by ear though. And a 15min burst would be considered short for ds. It could take as long as 45mins to get him to come around. and then ages to get him to calm down enough to go to sleep again.

laurenamium · 13/06/2012 23:19

Oh wow bitchy I really hope DD doesn't get that bad Shock she is only 18 months do only time will tell. I'm hoping it gets better and not worse though!Sad

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 14/06/2012 06:00

Lauren my Ds started nightmares avery night at 18m, hysterical he was,the ONLY thing that would calm him down was his Baby Einstein music DVD which was his greatest comfort at that age. Turned out he was scared of the dark, once we started leaving his dimmer on low he started sleeping through peacefully. Talking of which I've been wide awake since about 5am. grrr.

feetheart · 14/06/2012 06:12

Me too Whoknows

All this talk of bodyclutter and I'm about to start running again - had chesty cold thing whilst away which I was really cross about as I was looking forward to running in the middle of no-where and then it hasn't stopped raining since we got back!
Now its sunny, I need some 'me time' and I'm up for joining the Body Clutter crew as I seem to have acquired half a stone from somewhere! I need a little motivation to stop snacking on rubbish and it should sort itself out so I'm in.

Will be back with a sort of Flying list later - lovely sunny early morning here I come...........

laurenamium · 14/06/2012 08:23

Morning!

Thanks whoknows, DD has a lamp in her room and I always leave the bathroom light on. She isn't waking up when it's happening, it's like sleep talking but screaming! She doesn't even come round from them either, just goes back into a sleep again after so long!!

List dump!
Go to makro
Go to b&q
Clean kitchen floor
Do some gardening/ painting
Cut the front lawn
Walk dog
Tea with the girls- must get salad or similar!
Laundry- lots of it!
Yesterday's mission
Today's mission
Move heavy furniture out of playroom into garage

BBL!

sanguinechompa · 14/06/2012 08:58

Good morning everyone. A lovely sunny day here after a week of rain.

Sympathies to those of you whose dc have night terrors. They sound absolutely awful. Lauren, sorry, no advice to offer I'm afraid, but I hope your little girl grows out of them soon.

Fatsamsgrandslam Will definitely keep an eye on your blog! Good luck with it!

Bitchy well done re: the early nights. I wish I could stick to them as I know it makes such a difference in terms of what I eat/mood/general effectiveness (and tolerance levels!) throughout the day. You are inspiring me to do better.

Likelucklove have fun on your picnic and hope the weather holds!

Waves to early birds Whoknows and

Feetheart (great you are joining in BC too)

You too Engelsmeijse

Speaking of Body Clutter (pls be kind to an an old techno-numpty emoticon) what is the deal with MFP then? Once you sign up to be friends with someone, do they get to see everything you have eaten and all the exercise you have done (or in my case not done) throughout a particular day? I think this would be very good motivation if that is the case!! And um, where do we actually speak to one another/ what are the technical aspects of sharing info? CarpeJugulum has kindly explained how to accept people as friends, but I need more info about what happens when you do! Thanks everyone!

Back to Flying:

To do:
Morning routine inc dw on, wm on, dining room table hotspot, playroom sofa hotspot, rabbit husbandry
Look up all the vocab I don't understand in dd's French hwk for tonight!
BOUDOIR!!!!! (it's still horrific) 15 mins by 15 mins
HOME OFFICE!! Ditto
Hoover up yet more white plaster dust
Organise winter coats for dry cleaning
Quick supermarket shop
Prepare letters/packages for post
Collect packages
Sort rubbish

Have a productive day everyone!!

It has been a bit hit and miss here Sad Smile [rueful]

and visiting Springer is currently lying on floor chewing a waterbottle to bits (one that had lost its top) He won't leave my side. Although he is going to have to be left today intermittently, as I need to go to an appt and to work this afternoon...

Ds2 has been having loads of screaming fits, and Ds1 doesn't seem much better (I think teens need spaaace don't they?)

Also DH has decided the visiting dog is a sign of my craziness (he hates dogs) and that the dog was emotionally damaged (it tried to greet him by jumping up at him Confused This has put him in an even worse mood, the thought of me wasting my time looking after someone else's dog....Hmm

SC elocution [pines] Ds1, in a calm moment, recited "IF" to me! They had learnt it in class. The teenager babysitter, who is very serious and finishing her A-levels, had never heard of IF by Kipling. I thought everyone had heard of it, maybe it was a fashionable poem in the 70/80's...

done
yesterday, Beavers helping
dog sitting and long walk/chat with friend!
cooked keema curry with peas and mince
got extremely cross with DH about the non-stop football which he is allowing our sons to watch!

NowTodo
clean kitchen
NO TELLY after school
Guides
appt for blood test
dog walk
work in library

swanthingafteranother · 14/06/2012 09:05

lauren there is a book by Dr Ferber How To Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems, and I think it has a section of night terrors.

swanthingafteranother · 14/06/2012 09:06

on night terrors. It is about sleep cycles, and the physiological side of sleep, and best way to approach difficulties from that point of view.

sanguinechompa · 14/06/2012 09:14

Hello Swan gosh, I bet your ds1's impromptu recital brought a tear to the eye!!

The poem that dd is learning for her exam, has lots of quite intricate sound structures to master and is seven verses long. We are only half way there ...[sigh] (Process not advanced by her mother's absymal accent.)

Sorry to hear about dh and dog. I think perhaps you either are a dog person or not and you can't really change. Difficult though when you love both!

Oh and sympathies re: non-stop football. Dh returned from his business trip only last night and within minutes of his return (literally minutes) not only was football on the telly, it seemed to be on every radio in the house too Confused

Better get on. Bathroom s&s takes twice as long when dh in residence!
