June know it's the fledgling flyers?

A warm welcome to the June Fledgling Flyers' thread.

If the state of your house is getting you down, this is the thread where we follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style Wink) with lots of chat and support along the way and where lace-up shoes are definitely optional.

A huge thank you to Linzer for keeping us all on track so splendidly during May and thank you to DroitwichMummy for the thread title.

As usual, we will be following the Flylady three-pronged approach:

  1. Baby-steps (a daily step to establish routines)
  2. Then baby-steps + 15 mins daily decluttering
  3. (And once decluttered) babysteps + daily missions

If you are feeling overwhelmed by clutter and mess, you can make a difference, one step at a time.

For more information, have a look here. You don't need to sign up to Flylady e-mails (we advise you not to do so in fact - you will be overwhelmed - all the information you need can be gleaned from this thread).

All long-standing members, intermittent returnees, lurkers and newcomers welcome!!

Glad cardiologist was reassuring SC hope you sleep well, windows open Smile We all have nightmares if our windows aren't open - could it be too much co2 accumulating?

I have booked our cheapish holiday flights to Eire/parents. Two lots, rather extravagantly, but last year I got stranded as prices shot up and DH had to be summoned rather peremptorily to help me look after the children (six weeks of solo bedtimes is no joke) Anyway it is still cheaper than going on a proper holiday, (well unless it was a tent [pines]

Homework done, football x 2, music practice x 2, swept up last of shed debris, bought food for week to go with veg box..and cooked some broadbean fritters (adults only Smile

swanriver · 14/06/2011 22:09

Had phone conversation with DSis about ends of paint tins taking over shed storage, she waved her hands airily as people with large cellars do...oh what's wrong with a few paint tins. EVERYTHING.

BlueEyeshadow · 14/06/2011 22:34

I don't know about on top of things, SC! It does feel scarily good to get back to work though, and the boys are back to the childminder tomorrow. Should I be this pleased about it?! Hmm The CM days are also my house bleugh days so hopefully will be lovely and tidy again soon... Boys' sock populations seem to be reasonably under control at the moment so may attempt to cull some of DH's... Shock

I hope the pills kick in soon SC - wishing you and CHB good sleep.

Sounds like you've been busy too swan - I really should do my weekly shop after the veg box comes but it's changed day so often I've got out of synch!

Ugh, it's got late again. Night all.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 14/06/2011 23:05

Evening all,

More productive today, cleaned entire bathroom except bath which I am going to do in a minute.

Went to work
DD to ballet, helped with costume sewing for forthcoming show
Made lasagne for tea. We are really struggling with getting the DCs to use cutlery properly, they have got firmly in the habit of using their forks in their right hands as scoops and no knives, they tend not to like the sort of meals that involve much cutting (pasta, curries are the overwhelming favourites). Any suggestions?

Also one load of washing, a little ironing (DD's Rainbow uniform, she has her Promise cereemony tomorrow), a little gardening, a little paperwork.

I have also spent the evening sorting out and ordering all the next size up school uniforms from M&S before it all goes out of stock. Took 2 hours, so many choices, especially for DD.

Bartlet I leave the washing out overnight from time to time, at this time of year it is quite likely to be dry by 9am. Have heard horror stories about it getting covered in cobwebs, but I've never had this problem.

NettieSpaghetti · 14/06/2011 23:29

Good evening all Grin

I've had a quick skim but nothing more as I'm off to bed.

I've no idea how I did on my list but I have accomplished today the following:-

Up/ds Montessori/ cleared home office of paperwork/ tidied kitchen/ hung out washing/took dd to swim lesson/went to farm shop/ came back put dinner in tidied house/ picked up ds/ took ds swimming/ home finished dinner/kids bathed/ weight watchers/ supermarket/ hair cut/ bags ready for tomorrow/ cards written/ parcel wrapped.

That's me! No bed stripping done/ no kids rooms tidied! Blush

Ah well tomorrow is another day, I'm at work all day but I'm sure I'll manage somethingHmm Bear

Hope you all have a fab day Grin

scattyspice · 15/06/2011 08:11

Morning Smile.

Don't know where the evenings are going at the moment Hmm. Today won't be much better as have agreed to stay and help at beavers plus have 'friends of the park' meeting at community centre after that.

Will catch up properly tomorrow.

BlueEyeshadow · 15/06/2011 10:50

Doh! I just realised I washed the towels instead of stripping the beds and washing the sheets! I thought towel day had come round quickly... Blush

Stillchuckingit · 15/06/2011 11:34

Afternoon all (well it is over here)

I think ...she says tentatively ...I'm feeling a bit better. Have rested all morning and am now preparing for dd's return (no school on Wed pms here).

You lot have been incredibly productive as usual - I'm feeling like a bit of a fraudulent thread leader as am achieving naff all Flying-wise except the odd bit of laundry and the occasional emptying of the dw. Dh on the other hand is being a star and cooked us all salmon last night with new potatoes and broccoli and at the same time cooked a chilli for tonight. I'm worrying about him overdoing it now!

Blue am impresed - I aspire to being so organised that I have a specified "towel day"!! Smile

Sorry to hear you are suffering CHB

Just reading your morning routine makes me feel tired Swan! Take it steady! And thank heavens you have a lovely holiday in Eire to look forward to.

You accomplished a mahoosive mountain of things yesterday Nettie!!! top Flying marks!!

Not a very inspiring suggestion but you could try making the cutlery thing in to a game Whoknows - roll-play being at a high-end restaurant - give them a menu - take orders - take turns being waiter/waitress etc etc or does that sound too much like hard work???

Blue glad you are enjoying being back at work! Good luck with it all!

Waves to Scatty and everyone else

See you all later ...

BartletForAmerica · 15/06/2011 12:34

Good afternoon all!

Stillchuckingit, remember "You are not behind!" Smile Getting anything done is better than nothing. Your DH sounds good though. My DH has noticed the difference since I started FLYing and helps me (voluntarily) with my evening routine.

Cinders, the bowling alley sounds like a great idea. Martin Luther built a bowling alley in his house, so if he could, why not?!

I'm just amazed at how much people manage with DC. I have only got one and he doesn't create that much mess on his own - I will just have to watch and learn...

For today:
Exercise - Shred Level 1 Day 4 done
Get dressed to shoes done
Bedroom done
Bathroom done
Laundry done
Walked into town and collect books ordered done
Dinner
Shine sink
Clean fridge (the veg box arrives on Thurs which fits in nicely with Flylady)
Menu planning for this week
Ocado order (to arrive on Fri)
Zone cleaning (still in the study here)
Kelly's Mission
Review paper before we submit for publication
Print off new papers for thesis
Send cheque for Pilates classes

Better crack on then. See you later.

LinzerTorte · 15/06/2011 13:36

Glad to hear you're finally starting to feel better SC. You really shouldn't feel fraudulent as you have carried on leading the thread admirably despite your health problems.

I, on the other hand, have no excuses. I did tidy the kitchen this morning, but can't remember the last time I looked at my routines, let alone the mission. I really wanted to get the house shipshape before the summer holidays, but we still have 2.5 weeks to go so all is not lost.

After a hot and sunny start to the day (far too hot for a 25 minute run, but I managed it somehow), it's now pouring with rain. Have just picked up DS (an hour early, as his friend and little sister are here and their mum had to go to work); at the moment the DC are all playing quite well together, but I'm not holding my breath. It's DD2's ballet show in a couple of hours; must remember to put her hair into a bun. At least she has slightly longer hair than DD1 so it should be a bit easier than pinning up DD1's hair before her school swimming lessons; another mother (who helped out with the swimming lessons) was telling me the other day how she was always very impressed with my handiwork with the kirby grips - so at least it must have stayed put (I wasn't sure it would).

LinzerTorte · 15/06/2011 13:37

Why won't Preview Message work? And where have my bookmark buttons disappeared to? Confused

missjulie · 15/06/2011 14:11

Hi all, just quickly popping head round door to ask a favour of you all!
Any chance you could please look here
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/1237794-PLEASE-come-and-help

Thanks in advance. x

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 15/06/2011 14:25

signed MissJ, I rememeber you telling us about DD's arrival, I cannot imagine how much worse it would have been with no beds free at the hospital

missjulie · 15/06/2011 14:27

I know! I got kicked out home as they ran out of beds, and was re-admitted on day 10 (the next day!) with suspected DVT! My husband was livid!!!

Spread the word guys, we need as many signatures as we can get!!!

Stillchuckingit · 15/06/2011 14:49

Signed MissJ you really need those local services in rural areas

Just as well I've got this thread to run Linzer! There's only so much sewing one can take!! Hope the ballet show goes well! (I think you have enough to contend with given your school run schedule)

Thank you Bartlett yes, agree, anything better than nowt, must remember that or my blood pressure will go up again!! I feel the same way about Flying with more than one dc; I just don't know how everyone on here does it!! Still, you seem to have more than your fair share of balls in the air, what with thesis and exercising on top of everything else.

Keep going everyone!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 15/06/2011 14:54

Linzer - DD has got her ballet show next month, she has been doing hlaf an hour extra rehearsal a week since Easter, there are proper dress rehearsals in a couple of weeks and she needs her hair in "a neat bun". Well, as her hair is shoulder length, fine, flyaway and full of random curls and fluffy bits that's going to be fun. The only time it looks neat is when it's soaking wet. I really don't want to plaster her with gel, but think I will have to. Oh and she's got to dress up in a rather unflattering clown outfit. Grr. Hope your DD's goes well!

swanriver · 15/06/2011 14:57

I've added my name MissJ

Had a bit of a hopeless day, dogged by sore throat, despite two lemsips.
However, cleaned windows downstairs, outside with newly reclaimed stepladder from shed of doom Grin
Made some choc krispie cakes to placate the ravenous hordes
Prepared casserole for supper, and hopefully another day this week
Prepare sauce for a veggie lasagne to assemble at some point beforeitgoesoff
forced myself to tidy kitchen and do washing up
took dry laundry upstairs, plodded on with third load of washing

SC fraudulent Shock You are doing a lot just to keep all the links and feedback going. Kind Dh.

Linzer as I said before, your house is obviously working very well if children are happy playing it in nottrippingovertoys, and it is probably a lot tidier than you think (could it be that you are comparing yourself to some very houseproud neighbours?)
Dd is enjoying learning "Sautes" (can't do the accent), and teacher showed her how to do the special ballet bun on Monday, she is still wearing it Shock
Enjoy the ballet show.

swanriver · 15/06/2011 15:01

whoknows I was so disappointed when I did my first ballet show and I had to dress up as a prince Shock(all girls' school). Still I think it's good to see that ballet is about characterization not just looking pretty and floaty. I bet the clown gets to do some great moves Smile

Stillchuckingit · 15/06/2011 15:39

[wish dd had given up ballet - sniff]] All these posts about buns are bringing back happy memories!!

Linzer typing too fast as usual - didn't finish post to you properly - meant to say you are being v. hard on yourself as you have enough to contend with, what with all the school runs, play dates etc etc never mind Flying!

Sorry you are feeling rough Swan You've done loads considering!

Whoknows when I was struggling with chignons (dd's hair is rather straight, slippy and uncooperative), I found these useful. You can get the crochet-ed (sp?) variety or the hair netty type.

LadyInPink · 15/06/2011 15:55

Started off so well:

Did 1st load of washing and hung out on line early while i did some shopping
Popped into MIL to check sizes of swimming cossies she has bought DD (she was fussing that she had got wrong size and that i needed to come over and bring old cossie to check right size)
Bought birthday and anniversary cards for this month and next month
Swapped my new bikini for a bigger size Sad I feel the same but sadly am not it seems
Bought new washing machine delimescaling sachets

By this time it is pouring with rain GGRR so i leg it home and bring still wet washing in and have hung it round the house - all bedding too.

Friend came over for lunch which was lovely and while she was there I thought i'd get on and do a few jobs whilst nattering:

Cleaned hob
Delimescaled washing machine
Emptied filter and delimescaled that too
Cleaned out the washing machine drawer [yuk emoticon]
Washed up breakfast and lunch things

Am now doing some office work (once i'm off mn)
Pick up DD from artclub
Homework with DD and reading book
Cook dinner for her and DH (i had such large cooked lunch i will have soup)

Think that's enough. Hope some of you are having sunshine where you are, it's pisitively possing it down here.

BBL

ColdHeartedBitch · 15/06/2011 16:28

As someone who has had to have hair in a bun soooo much of my life, Top tips are. Do not wash hair night before, spray hair with hairspray and allow to set, then brush it into ponytail. Use a bun ring (can get different widths) secure with hair net and kirby pins. Add top coat of hairspray to finished thing. Works a treat on every hair type. Oh and mouse over gel every time.

This weekend I shall be doing exactly the same thing. Hmm

I have lost my glasses. bugger.

Flying a bit on hold/diveated.

So far today:
banking
contact lens and eye test info chasing
pick basket of strawberrys for jamming later.
About to chuck a load of washing on.

Left to do:
ds swimming lesson
tea
Start tidying and moving furniture
remake ds' bed
do more bedding washing (3 loads from last night alone. )
Prep fruit for jam
Make first batch of Jam
Wash jars for jam
Pre-warm jars
Jar Jam
Ironing

Might as well make use of my insomnia Hmm

PLus it is absolutely chucking it down :( was that summer?
