wendyhappysmile · 16/11/2010 09:26

Hiya ladies

Are we sticking to last week's thread this week?!

Still here

Feeling tearful - DS just pushed DD over at nursery school drop off and refused to do as I asked when I asked him to come and stand next to me. Went to retrieve him and asked him to stand next to me and he shouted as loud as possible that he didn't want to and proceeded to punch the wall (brick!) several times.

Where do I go with that?!!! His behaviour is becoming increasingly aggressive lately, since he went back to school in September, I am loathe to blame school but all his friends are in the year above him now as he is in a mixed class, and are all boys ... it's seems a coincidence that this is where the aggressive talk and aggressive behaviour towards me and his sister have begun. I need to tackle it but I don't know where to start and am just too tired and overwhelmed with the fact that I am about to have a baby to deal with it!!

OP posts:
swanriver · 16/11/2010 10:15

I'm afraid that's what they are like...Sad
Imo they are extremely sensitive to any change/tension in the air and react to it violently and emotionally.
If you went along to Beavers you would be amazed to see how aggressive/determined these sweet little boys are. Even the quiet "good" ones.

I think you are tackling it fine, and he did what you said, which is a very good sign. Boys Do like rules and boundaries. You may find that he absolutely loves being the important funny Big Brother and that solves problem.

swanriver · 16/11/2010 10:51

now Wendy I need to pick your brains!
What investment PRAM do you recommend for my sister-in-law whose first baby is due in Dec/Jan. She is in city, lots of local shops/parks, slight, short and has a very narrow hall/small house with no steps. And is of a nervous disposition. And won't be using the car much with baby. But they do use the car at weekends?
My first pram was all wrong and I'm 10 ft tall in comparison so I can't give good advice on that one...

Jas · 16/11/2010 11:17

No advice on prams. I'm good at tall people prams, tooSmile

Sad Wendy Sorry I have no advice. I am on a very steep learning curve myself wrt dealing with small boys! I will be reading what others have to say though.

I have done
-all errands on my list
-play online war game Blush
-kitchen worktops
-microwave
-hob

Now I need to do
-mop kitchen
-clean bathroom
-replace sofa covers
-hoover
-15 mins x 3 in bedrooms
-cook fish pie and veg crumble for tea
-book optician and dentist appts

MNTotoro · 16/11/2010 13:03

aw, all the old faces are flocking back.

How lovely!

Busy day so far. Visited school for DD2 Shock can believe she'll be going in Sep!!! I was on here when she was born. Remember satin_shoes??

Then went for a swim, and have a greasy spoon lunch. yum.

wendyhappysmile · 16/11/2010 13:13

Thanks swan and jas for your advice. I just think what sort of person punches a wall?!
I am thoroughly fed up and just not feeling equipped to deal with it at all.

swan I totally got my first pram wrong and this time have got a (second hand) 'proper' pram i.e. with carrycot/proper seat unit etc which is not really meant for car usage! But I walk to school and back twice a day, walk to the shops, shop locally a few times a week, to grandparents etc - so it suits me. Plus I still have my first one - one of those pramettes - which is great to fold and go in the car. Also I have a large-ish hall and house to store it in ...

A lot of my friends have things like the Bugaboo (£££ but looks cool, and baby lies flat and faces the parent - think it folds up small for a car but is good for walking in a city and is compact for a narrow hall. Think other brands do a similar - there's the Loola which my friend loves but has little storage underneath, and think Mamas and papas do one similar.

I would advise her to go to John Lewis if she is near one - their advisors are supposed to be impartial and good and they have a good range - not on a Saturday though, pick a quiet time.

swanriver · 16/11/2010 13:49

Wendy thanks for pram info!

re:violent children Close calm physical contact and talking distraction/simple boundaries seem to work with ds2. Shouting/telling off create serious backlash.
Dd needs to be left alone, and if necessary put out of the room to calm down, otherwise she will argue and scream forever. She needs lots of cuddles when she is good to stop her being bad ifysim.
Both twins are forever kicking and hitting each other. Sometimes me Sad
The cats help a lot to calm us all down...
Ds1 got into rages and was violent in the way you describe - very emotional boisterous child, but hs turned out quite easy going, though still emotional and boisterous. I think he's shy and not so good at showing how he feels, except in a rather extreme way.

oh dear, not good is it Sad

Jas · 16/11/2010 13:52

I remember Satin-Shoes. Smile

Wendy - The kind of person who punches a wall could just be a child who is angry, but knows he can't punch people, and has to do what he is told, but needs to vent somehow. He will learn other ways to express himself, but there are many worse things he could have done. Try not to take it to heart.

Now I need to do
-mop kitchen
-clean bathroom done
-replace sofa covers done
-hoover done
-15 mins x 3 in bedrooms
-cook fish pie done
-cook veg crumble for tea part done (no nuts for the crumble, so will have to stop at the corner shop on the way to school.
-book optician and dentist appts done

MNTotoro · 16/11/2010 14:03

Jas - you should look at my latest facebook pics - she's a big girl now!

Said big girl has just got changed into a summer dress Hmm It's freezing fog outside...

I'll look at your pics this evening.

Jas · 16/11/2010 14:36

I've spent 20 mins looking at an assortment of FLY friends' photos....but I can't remember your RL name, so I haven't found you! Please give me a nudge (I still have a pumpkin as my profile pic....)

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 16/11/2010 14:53

pumpkin with skull in the middle??
if so I shared your breastfeeding thing yesterday J T

wendyhappysmile · 16/11/2010 16:46

Thanks for the feedback ladies. I know I am feeling very low and emotional at the minute - to be expected I know. I don't like losing control of my life! I am very bored, haven't been further than 2 miles in about a month, same places. Sick of being unable to play, run etc with DC and more than that not actually wanting to - I just can't be bothered.
Nice to see you Greyskull

I'm afraid I have little experience with boys or children who have tantrums. Neither of mine have ever really had them Blush. So this wall hitting and recent bad aggressive behaviour is a shock!

OP posts:
OverflowingMum · 16/11/2010 18:14

evening all

wendy I really think that all DC are so different. MY DD4 for example was a relatively easy toddler, but DS2 is , well, just ferral really! He will go up to other children in the school playground and just push them Shock is also very destructive around the home , mostly through over exuberance, throwing things etc...but is real challenge to say the least. Sometimes I do feel mortified at how he behaves Blush, but then some of the others have been similar nightmares at his age and have mostly turned out OK....
And things will seem worse to you just now, only natural...just keep repeating "this too will pass, this too will pass...."
and wise words from swan too I think...

everyone-else Hi!

I am sooo totally exhausted today, and, well, generally really...I just never seem to have any energy...I wake up feeling so totally shattered I wonder how I am going to will my body out of bed...and then it just gets worse as the day goes on...think I may need to eat more iron or something Confused

anyway....

My dress is very boring for those that asked! From Sainsburys Blush I wa sin there for other stuff and spotted it...I have been looking for something not too gloittery/partyish as it is for a Church thing and I didnt want too OTT...dress is navy maxi dress style thing with pink/orange patterns....and was only £20!
Probably not very exciting to those of you with any fashion sense, but given that I haven't bought ANY new clothes in a very long as I have been too fat/exhausted/over-run/poor it cheered me up!(and it is a size 12 which I haven't been for about 7 years Blush!)

so....not a bad day really...have been making big effort to remain calm during after school time, and am also making effort to be more consistent with boundries for DS2...think I have been a bit lax with that Blush He has been on "the naughty step" about 7 times tonight Hmm but it seems to be helping...hmmm

Now have to go reboot laundry...again...sigh

Still have things to get for weekend...and remembered that I have a pyschology app for dd3 on Friday morning which scuppers plans of getting everything on Friday...and MIL arriving Friday...and house still a tip...sighHmm

right, well BBtomorrow Grin

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 16/11/2010 18:43

Evenign all,

ofm it is like ground hog day isn't it with the washing and looking after a family, it really does help when the boundries stay the same, I think they find comfort in it, (even if they push it all the time) Envy at your size 12, I will be there again one day, hopefully before next Christmas! The dress sounds really lovely!

wnedy we have had such trouble with DS1, his anger just takes me by surprise every time, I have no understanding how to deal with it, I just know that so far - for us - an angry response is like petrol on a fire. Giving him time to be cross and get it out of his system seems to work. I have my own difficulties dealing with it because we were never allowed to be angry as children and I have been very self destructive as a result. I want the boys to know that we understand that life sometimes makes us angry, you just have to be able to articulate or channel it without putting a hole in your wall or smacking someone. It is really upsetting for everyone, I know DS1 doesn't like being angry, he just can't help himself sometines.

got to go bathe the boys bbl

scattyspice · 16/11/2010 19:06

Hi all.

Great to see lots of old flyer back Smile.

I have had a very busy weekend with lots of visiters etc. have been more than usually scatty including locking me, mum and dc out of the house on Fri after school and running out of petrol in the wilds of Northumbria and having to buy some off a farmer Blush.

Done:
laundry (loads)
hoover/swept floors
sorted tombola prizes for school fair
txt friend

wendy my ds was a shocker from about 18mnths until 6. Now he is a very reasonable 7 yo.

greyskull that was interesting what you said (and quite true I think).

I'll catch up properly tomorrow.

OverflowingMum · 16/11/2010 21:05

scatty you mean I may have another 4 years or so of DS2 being a nightmare to get through Shock

wendy maybe we ought to form a support group for those with small "lively" boys!

off to bed very shortly...
night all zzzzzzz
