How would you answer this English question?

So
DON'T read anyone else's answer first.
DON'T explain your answer for now, just answer.
DON'T overthink it, go with what your first response would be.

This is a comprehension passgae based on a poem. The first verse of the poem is:

Hamelin's Town's in Brunswick
By famous Hanover city;
The river Weser deep and wide,
Washes its wall on the southern side;

The question is:

In relation to the river, Hamelin lies:
a) to the north
b) to the south
c) to the west
d) to the east

So which answer would you choose? I'll be back in a couple of hours to explain why I'm asking and see what people put.

Thank you!!

To the north

TheCompactPussycat · 23/11/2023 11:10

I'd have said Hamelin was to the north of the river based on that.

North?

CatonmyKeyboard · 23/11/2023 11:17

North, unless you are thinking that the river is within the town wall and washing the southern side of that?

LoveThisDog · 23/11/2023 11:17

The river flows through the middle of the town. Not obvious from the one verse you've quoted but is clear from reading the whole poem (I am very familiar with it!).

Sorry - so in answer to your question I wouldn't know whether to choose north, south, east or west.

TotalOverhaul · 23/11/2023 11:20

I'd think the town was to the North. But it is ambiguous whether the poem refers to the southern side of the city walls or the southern side of the river.

AngelasEyelash · 23/11/2023 11:24

The north

Rogue1001MNer · 23/11/2023 11:26

Another North here

Cookingdoesntgettougher · 23/11/2023 11:28

North

penjil · 23/11/2023 11:29

The river runs in the south of the city "washes it's southern wall).....so the town is to the north of it.

CurlewKate · 23/11/2023 11:32

North.

And you have one too many apostrophes.
