I want to do a feature wall with this William Morris paper.

What colour paint would you put on the other walls?

I like colour!

Beautiful choice. Your room is going to look lovely @finallydecorating!
Just the kind of room to pose in in a cool white outfit...😂

Yiayoula · 20/04/2025 15:48

Yay, blue ! 👏🥳
Looking forward to the finished project pics .
Chillax now and have a great Easter 🐣.

I also thought that was you for a second OP 😂

Good news on the paint though - blue, yay!!! Bad news on the plastering though - always risky when you have to strip old paper off!

I was thinking of you the other day because I saw some William Morris coasters.

Thank you for updating - looking forward to seeing the finished result 😊

Ah, that's really sweet of you to think of me! I definitely would have been tempted by them.

I'm being stalked by William Morris stuff every time I go online now, the algorithm definitely has me sussed!

It's becoming a challenge to not spend a fortune on beautiful things I really don't need. 😁

Update! The walls are blue!! They look beautiful. 😍

We finally, FINALLY got through all the annoying prep bits and got to the actual painting today.

Glossing wood tomorrow, maybe even the wallpapering too if we can get the glossing done relatively quickly...

My latest dilemma if anyone fancies joining me in a new design challenge, is finding curtains and also material for the dining chairs, which desperately need reupholstering.

The promo pic for the wallpaper (which includes blue paint not entirely dissimilar from my new blue walls) has an orange curtain, which I thought was really nice. I'd need something a bit more substantial than voile though, and I've not found anything online that would work.

I need a pencil pleat if I'm to reuse the current curtain pole.

I also thought the chairs might be nice in a similar bright orange, red or pink to go with the pomegrantes and birds on the paper, but I'm totally overwhelmed by choice there! Any tips much appreciated!

Oops, I meant to repost the promo pic! Here is is.

Hmmm, I might play it safe and go for navy curtains.

I like the navy, don’t like the greens much (weird because it’s my favourite colour.) You could try a cranberry, (but it is hard to get rid of if you don’t like it) or a coral colour.

JaninaDuszejko · 25/04/2025 06:03

I think the orange curtains in the promo picture works because the counter top and the stool are light wood and if you look at all the accessories they are in that light beige/coral range as well. It's a classic technique to use the minor colour in the wallpaper for accessories to make them pop, and it looks really good and modern here. If you decide to go for blue curtains then I think you'll still need one major orangy thing somewhere in the room (sofa or table or sideboard) plus smaller things in the same tone to lighten things.

Not sure why if you have a curtain pole you need the curtains to be pencil pleat, that doesn't affect the way the curtain is attached to the pole. Pencil pleat is nice but pinch pleat looks even classier due to the handmade nature of it. Eyelets (much hated by MN due to being very popular 20 years ago and cheaper because they use the least fabric) work with poles as well. What colour is your curtain pole?

heldinadream · 25/04/2025 07:09

Dunelm have got plain 100 cotton made to measure curtains in pencil pleat options (I have read @JaninaDuszejko comment on curtain types above but I'm definitely a curtain doofus so sticking to the brief for now). Lots of colours, not the right orange or, I think, the right navy. Would the petrol be too much? Unfortunately the samples seem to be out of stock.
Are you thinking plain for both these fabrics - curtains and chairs - or could you consider a pattern? Plain easier obviously. Will there be any other patterns in the room? So glad the paint's looking good (longing for a real pic of your room with the paint...) 😂

Interesting!

We have matching 1930s sideboard, table and dining chairs (all in need of some tlc, tbh) which is darker than the wood in that pic but still has orange tones. The wood on the floor is quite orange too.

The piano is black.

The blue is looking much more blue and less teal in the daylight, but I'm not complaining about that at all!

Starting the day with a second coat... Funny how much difference a bit of sun makes, it definitely needs it!

Your wood looks nice with the blue walls. Probably why blue is such a popular colour for interiors actually, it shows off wood nicely.

I'd definitely consider a pattern, I love pattern!

But I'm not sure I trust myself to choose one that goes!

I'd love either of these patterns for the chairs for example but I don't think I can get away with the wallpaper - possibly a bit much?! 😁

They're from this shop incase anyone else loves them (they're not cheap!)

It has to be pencil pleat because the bay goes right up to the ceiling, there's no room for a curtain pole. There's a kinda strip there which you can attach pencil pleat curtains which take those little plastic things, to.

(Sorry I don't know the proper terms, I hope that makes sense!)

The alternative would be blinds or shutters which would look lovely but I have no budget for them.

Those fabrics are utterly gorgeous. I tentatively think you could get away with the Orpheus one because the shapes are more organic. Trouble is they are out of samples too and the sale about to end so it's a risk.
Are you reupholstering the chairs yourself? If you're paying a professional reupholsterer I think they like to be consulted as to fabric and also will advise on suitability and quantity needed.
Costs an arm and a leg though. 😬

finallydecorating · 25/04/2025 10:43

Nah, definitely doing it myself!

I looked at a YouTube and it looked doable - how hard can it be?! 😁

It's gorgeous isn't it!

OP posts:
heldinadream · 25/04/2025 10:53

You're brave, but I'm considering the same thing. But for sofas. Never reupholstered anything in my life. Could easily be a disaster. 😂 But the cost of getting two 3 seater sofas professionally reupholstered is waaaay out of our budget. I'm even thinking of doing a trial run with cheap material first. Old sheets even! The risk of buying lovely expensive material and totes screwing it up brings me out in a cold sweat!

LibertyLily · 25/04/2025 14:13

Agree that the Clarke and Clarke Orpheus fabric might work well.

Jane Clayton have samples of it available (you can get five free samples, just pay for p&p) and the fabric is £48 per metre, so not much different to Terry's. I've used Jane Clayton loads of times and would recommend.

Looking forward to seeing your finished room @finallydecorating 😀

@heldinadream see if there is an upholstery class nearby so you can pick up some skills first. My Mum did upholstery as a hobby when younger, she did a few seat covers (very easy) but also did a Queen Anne chair which took her a long time. She was already a sewing teacher though so had related skills.

I thought about that but haven't managed to find anything. There's the inevitable YouTube vids but I'm still nervous about chopping up expensive fabric.
Can't do anything until we move anyway. I could start a thread on reupholstering! Moral support! Thing is the sofas we have are extremely good, comfortable and in very good nick, I'm just sick of the colour which I was never entirely happy with in the first place, so moving is the opportunity to change them but I can't justify new sofas because it's just not a priority so an attempt to reupholster is the obvious answer.
Or it would be if I thought I could make a decent job of it.
@finallydecorating I hope you'll share your reupholstering attempts with us?
That's it, I've just used the word reupholstering far too many times than is good for this thread. 😂

Yiayoula · 25/04/2025 15:51

Much as I love the Orpheus fabric , I’m not sure if it would be too much (know it would for me ) but if you can make it work then go for it- you’re doing great so far !
