Bathroom tiles done wrong. Opinions? *pics*

They've done my bathroom wrong, the feature herringbone wall looks as I hoped but the white tiles are supposed to have white grout. We have a separate en suite and WC that are half tiled, with the small metro tiles which have dark grout but I didn't want it on 3 fully tiled walls in my bathroom so went for larger tiles in here with white tiles.

My partner thinks it looks better this way and to leave it, I want to ask them to change it to what I asked for. Opinions?

White grout is a bastard to keep clean, I think it looks lovely but it’s personal taste.

I like the metro tiles with the dark grout.

fudgecat · 17/07/2021 08:22

Looks great!

thecatsmum12346 · 17/07/2021 08:23

The white grout would probably have gone grey or black anyhow with dirt and time. I think it looks great and gives the tiles more definition.

RubyGoat · 17/07/2021 08:24

I think that looks lovely, personally. And I agree, white grout is a pain to keep clean. Our local water turns it pinkish brown. Constantly need to scrub it with bleach & an old toothbrush. dont even get me started on the stupid tiles

Jasmine11 · 17/07/2021 08:30

Agree with pp, white tiles look better with a darker grout and stay looking nicer for longer. White grout is quite an old fashioned look these days. I love the herringbone tiles too :)

0blio · 17/07/2021 08:31

I think the dark grout looks better against the dark tiled wall. White might have been too much of a contrast. It all looks lovely and very neatly done.

Scarby9 · 17/07/2021 08:35

I think it looks great.
I have three white tiled walls and one darker mosaic in the shower, and have been considering going back and darkening the grout on the white tiles both because of the cleaning issue others have mentioned, but also to tie all the walls together more.

thecatsmum12346 · 17/07/2021 08:35

Just spoke to handyman husband who does all our tiling. He says if you had gone for white it would go mouldy with the damp and darken anyway. It’s lovely. Really and a nice contrast with the herringbone. It’s beautiful.

WeAreTheHeroes · 17/07/2021 08:36

The grey grout ties the two different types of tiling together imho.

LakeShoreD · 17/07/2021 08:36

I’d keep the darker grout. It goes better with the darker feature wall (which is amazing by the way) and it will be much easier to keep clean. I know it wasn’t what you asked for but I think the builders have done you a big favour!

GinPink · 17/07/2021 08:39

I think white grout looks better when it's first done. But give it a year and it will be dirty and discoloured. It's why we have dark grout everywhere too, even though I prefer fresh white grout....

Killahangilion · 17/07/2021 08:39

I really like it. Looks good contrasting with the darker tiles.

I think it would look a bit weird and completely disconnected from the darker tiles, if it was a white grout.

DinosaurDiana · 17/07/2021 08:41

I like it, you won’t see the mould !

Bluntness100 · 17/07/2021 08:43

Yes it ties it in with the feature wall much better. And white grout would make it look quite sterile. Think the tiler has done you a favour op

DrWankincense · 17/07/2021 08:44

I think it looks lovely.
The white grout would be sparkling and new for a month or so and then I bet you'd kick yourself for changing it.
I agree that it ties in with the herringbone tiles better. Where are they from, I really like them?

Bagelsandbrie · 17/07/2021 08:45

Going against the grain I don’t like the dark grout and I think the white would definitely look better as it would make the lovely herringbone wall stand out even more.

TableNiner · 17/07/2021 08:46

I don’t think it looks ‘bad’ enough to change it all. I tend to find things that bother me when first done slide out of mind as you get used to it.

friskybivalves · 17/07/2021 08:49

I had white grout and was thrilled with it. Totally thrilled. Tons of those bastarding expensive tippexy pens, and lots of crawling about on my hands and knees later, swearing at the mould and the scunge and the grunge that had soon appeared, I was less smug.

Your herringbone tiles are stunning. Where are they from?

daisypond · 17/07/2021 08:54

I think ideally the white grout would look better. There’s a mismatch/cluttered effect with the grey herringbone tiles and then the vertical/horizontal grout lines on the white. But now it’s been done, I might live with it. All the practical reasons why grey grout is better, as PP have said, stand.

TilingTiles · 17/07/2021 08:54

Well my partners won this vote!

I do still sort of agree that white would of made the herringbone stand out more, but the cleaning aspect is a good point. Hopefully it'll grow on me but as it wasn't what I was expecting it's thrown me a bit. I thought dark grout with white tiles was a bit manic on a fully tiled wall so perhaps I just need to get used to it.

The herringbone tiles for those asking are CTD tiles Dyroy Aqua. They also do the Dyroy tile in a gorgeous green colour which I desperately wanted but my partner preferred the blue, I still love it but I'm secretly longing for green Grin

Whilst you're all here.. we are having a tiled bath panel too, the white tiles or the herringbone for that?

The herringbone is fine, dark tiles with dark grout. The white I would be fuming - reminds me of a Tube station Confused I know it's trendy to have dark grout. I just don't like it personally.

My sympathies OP.

Yep I can see this too. I'm really unsure on it!

I'm in the minority and think it would have looked better with white (no clash with the feature wall) but agree with the cleaning comments. So on balance, probably would not get them to re-do it
