Bathroom tiles done wrong. Opinions? *pics*

They've done my bathroom wrong, the feature herringbone wall looks as I hoped but the white tiles are supposed to have white grout. We have a separate en suite and WC that are half tiled, with the small metro tiles which have dark grout but I didn't want it on 3 fully tiled walls in my bathroom so went for larger tiles in here with white tiles.

My partner thinks it looks better this way and to leave it, I want to ask them to change it to what I asked for. Opinions?

Yes I'm wondering now if I've just picked the wrong tiles. I wanted the herringbone to be the feature so just went for a white tile exactly twice the size with white grout to be neutral and contrast size wise but not clash. The floor also looks a different shade of white not the same colour which I thought I'd chosen. The vanity was meant to tie it all together but seeing the tiles in person I worry it'll clash. It all fees wrong and I'm really sad about it! I know it's just a bathroom but I wanted it to be lovely and made a lot of effort trying to design it..

I think with the dark grout and the herringbone there's just too much going on. In saying that, give it a few weeks, you won't even notice! The herringbone tiles look blue (and green) to me - it all depends on other people computer settings but also their colour visualisation.

On another note, if I'd asked the contractor for white I'd have been really annoyed if he chose what he wanted!

onceivepostedidontcomeback · 17/07/2021 10:42

Also, your floor tiles don't line up with the wall tiles, - that would stress me out way more!

TilingTiles · 17/07/2021 10:45

I think I'll just have them leave it for now, I'll see it all put together and if it isn't right I'll get new tiles on the white tiled walls. So frustrating.

I'm not convinced the floor and wall tiles could ever be lined up though. They look completely different widths.

l2b2 · 17/07/2021 10:50

Also by the time the bath panel is on, that bit will be covered.

jihhy · 17/07/2021 10:55

I personally prefer non white grout as it gets dirty

jihhy · 17/07/2021 10:56

more modern looking too

SwedishEdith · 17/07/2021 10:56

I think it looks fine but also don't think it's that hard to clean the white grout. Just spray that anti-mould bleach on it every now and then. I'd worry I just couldn't see it with grey grout. The orange/pinky colour comes from soap splashes on the grout, apparently.

HforHotel · 17/07/2021 10:56

Actually I think a PP has hit the nail on the head. It's not necessarily the grout colour that's the issue...the different tiles don't work well together. They're 2 entirely different styles. White grout would make it slightly less noticeable.

MaMelon · 17/07/2021 11:01

White grout definitely - you’ve got three different things going on there with white tiles, dark grout and a coloured herringbone tile. You need completely white tile and white grout to act as a blank canvas for the herringbone tile to stand out against.

If you’re worried about mould stuff [[https://www.amazon.co.uk/HG-186050106-Mould-Spray/dp/B000IU40H?tag=mumsnetforu03-21Q]] is amazing - spray on, leave, rinse or wipe off. Do it every six months or so, takes a few minutes.

MaMelon · 17/07/2021 11:02

Spectacular link fail there - it’s HG Mould Remover Spray. £7 on Amazon or B&Q and other places sell it. Best stuff ever - seriously.

longtompot · 17/07/2021 11:25

I think it looks ok, but I do think white grout on the blue herringbone tiled wall would make it look better. You'd be able to see the pattern better. Currently, it's just a dark wall. It looks bluish on my iPad but it does have a grey tinge. White grout might bring the blue out more.
I do like the grey grout on the metro tiled wall so I would keep that.

Agree.

You'll probably get used to it, but if you do change the white tiles in future I'd probably go for much, much bigger tiles (that don't correlate in size to the small ones) so the contrast between the (very beautiful) herringbone tiles and the rest of the wall is much greater and clear cut. Then it is an obvious demarcation and clear that one is a feature wall and the contrast is deliberate.

What you've done is almost the tile version of having a painted feature wall only one shade different from the other walls.

Also, with larger tiles there are fewer grout lines (of whatever colour) and it makes those walls less busy so they don't pull your eye away from the feature section. The white tiles are so small all I keep looking at is the grout lines and volume of tiles. If they were much bigger my eye would go back to your feature wall instead of going "wow that's a lot of tiles" .

I think when you're using contrast you need to be brave and really contrast. By trying to align the sizes and shapes of the two tiles I think you've lost that power.

For me, it does remind me a little of grimy public places that makes you feel a little uncomfortable and I also think there is jarring effect in that the white tiles are too small which makes it look busy and distracting as well as less like a feature wall and more like the money didn't stretch tbh.

These are just my personal impressions and experiences of experimenting with contrast myself. It doesn't look awful, but since you're not happy yourself and contemplating already then these are my thoughts!

On a positive note, I don't normally like herringbone but I think your wall looks beautiful.

user27424799642256 · 17/07/2021 12:15

I like the herringbone with the grey grout. It suits the colour tones, and lets the tiles speak. I don't think it would be as beautiful if you were looking at a wall of individually white framed tiles.

It's the way it all fits together with all the different tones complementing and offsetting each other in the well-executed pattern as one piece.

Your eye naturally moves across it taking in the colours and patterns. I don't think it would if it was broken up with white grout.

But I suppose it's whether you want the effect of a beautiful wall or individual beautiful tiles. I prefer the former.

I'm not using a fancy device but I can see the pattern and distinction between tiles. It doesn't look like a formless blob of colour to me.

HereIfYouNeedMe · 17/07/2021 12:18

Sorry OP I think the dark grout is really clashing with the beautiful herringbone feature wall

Gemma2019 · 17/07/2021 12:27

I'm with you OP, the dark grout has made the white tiles much more prominent than they are supposed to be next to that beautiful blue herringbone wall. It still looks nice though and I don't know if I could be bothered to change it, in case the tiles get damaged around the edges. They have done a great job of the tiling.

This is why I dread doing bathrooms in my own house. They never look like other people's and are always a disappointment compared to how I expected them to look.

TilingTiles · 17/07/2021 12:43

Argh so annoying I'm really not sure what to do now Sad

I much prefer the look of the dark grout. Looks great to me!

sillyrubberduck · 17/07/2021 13:10

I think the white grout would look much better. There is very good mould resistant grout you can buy if worried about cleaning. I have it in my shower and 3 yrs on it looks as fresh as first day, I do squeegee and spray religiously as well.

TilingTiles · 17/07/2021 13:13

They weren't supposed to look like metro tiles, it's far far bigger than a metro tile. These are the metro tiles in the en-suite which are way smaller. But these weren't supposed to look like that so it's just thrown off the room. I'm actually looking back at my emails and I had specified for the herringbone to have white grout too. The second pic was the picture I gave them as reference!

Another vote for the dark grout. That said though you can change the color of the grout if you can’t get used to it with a grout colourant, much cheaper than having it regrouted or even re-tiled.

Just google for ones like this -

Sleepingdogs12 · 17/07/2021 13:16

Really like it and makes the overall impact more cohesive but it is personal taste really.

UserName9999 · 17/07/2021 13:40

I prefer the herringbone with the grey grout and think that it will date less than the white in the picture that you posted.

I think that the white tiles would look better with white grout but I’m not a fan of grey grout on white tiling anyway. Although one of the reasons that I don’t usually like it is because it shows up the imperfections in the tiling but it looks like your tiler has done a great job.

Gemma2019 · 17/07/2021 13:42

I prefer the herringbone with the white grout too.

Are you sure your DH didn't go behind your back and tell the tilers to use dark grout? It's strange that they would just do this.
